The Byronic Heroine, Jessica M. Laffoon
The Byronic Heroine, Jessica M. Laffoon
Theses & Honors Papers
This thesis examines the well-used character persona in Western literature, the Byronic hero which can be prominently seen in both George Gordon and Lord Byron’s poetry, as well as the juxtaposition to this hero, the Byronic heroine. Both hero and heroine are characterized by being sensitive, passionate, strong, and having self-destructing tendencies. These romantic heroes can be seen throughout many works of literature.
Much Ado About Nothing's Criticism Of The Renaissance Patriarchy, Kristen Zomparelli '07
Much Ado About Nothing's Criticism Of The Renaissance Patriarchy, Kristen Zomparelli '07
Honors Projects
Conventional beliefs during the Renaissance still supported unchallenged patriarchal rule. Male domestic treatise writers as well as male educators during the Renaissance prescribed silence as a necessary virtue for the ideal woman (Hull, Women 23). The most common rationale for women's silence was religious, and men used Biblical examples - such as the story of creation, the story of the Fall, and the Proverbial descriptions of the good wife - to support their beliefs in women's silence (Kelso 3). Men also prescribed obedience, chastity, and domesticity for women as a strategic method of preserving men's limitless, unchallenged power (Hull, Women …

Moros Y Cristianos: Intangible Cultural Exchange Along The Camino Real, David F. García
Moros Y Cristianos: Intangible Cultural Exchange Along The Camino Real, David F. García
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
Although excellent regional studies of conquest drama and ritual dance have been conducted in northern Mexico and New Mexico, this is the first which links the Moros y Cristianos equestrian traditions in a comparative study along the cultural corridor of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. In the past, the Mexican cultural heritage of these dramas was overlooked. Many researchers linked the conquest dramas directly to Spain without exploring the contexts in which they were already being performed in the Americas. More attention also needs to be given the Moros y Cristianos equestrian play of New Mexico and its relation …

Desiring Nation: Prostitution, Citizenship, And Modernity In Cuba, 1840-1920, Tiffany A. Thomas-Woodward
Desiring Nation: Prostitution, Citizenship, And Modernity In Cuba, 1840-1920, Tiffany A. Thomas-Woodward
History ETDs
This dissertation uses prostitution as a lens through which to study the intersection of gender, sexuality, and nation-building in late colonial and early republic Cuba. Between 1840 and 1920, Cuba underwent a series of profound transformations spurred by the abolition of slavery, national wars of independence, mass migration, and foreign occupation. My investigation of Spanish, Cuban, and U.S. sources reveal that as Cubans struggled to define a sense of national identity in the face of changing political alliances and shifting populations, prostitution became a focus for the expression of contemporary social and sexual anxieties. State policies, designed to control prostitutes' …

Democratic Relationships: An Institutional Way Of Life With/In The Writing Center, Katie Hupp Stahlnecker
Democratic Relationships: An Institutional Way Of Life With/In The Writing Center, Katie Hupp Stahlnecker
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this dissertation, I build upon the notion that for writing centers to thrive in the twenty-first century, they must reposition themselves not as marginal but as central to alliance building within the institution (Brannon and North). I tell the story of establishing one writing center’s mission that thrives on building democratic relationships within the institution and dissolving traditional academic hierarchies. At the core of our mission is the dialogical exchange that allows for student writers to be heard. The true work of establishing and preserving the integrity of the open forum we have created for student writers involves making …
