Being A Christian Or A Muslim -How?- The Question Is Now, Marko P. Djuric
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Christianity and Islam can do a great deal for the cause of human justice and interethnic peace. The most important task today is to work on reconciliation and on creating an atmosphere of mutual t1ust. This is the only way in which we can avoid the Balkans being once again, in the future, a region with an "excess of history." But as regards the Church and Islam, they must work on a theology that will ensure mutual respect and eliminate mutual prejudices. However, a theology of this kind has yet to feature in our Eastern Orthodoxy.

Engendering Identity: The Women's Peace Movement In Israel From The 1960s To 1993, Molly Berger
Whittier Scholars Program
This project explores how the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has had an impact on women and altered their roles in Israeli society within the women’s peace movement from the late 1960s to the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993. This study includes a brief overview of the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, followed by a more specific history of the women’s peace movement, and then further develops the concepts of gender and identity within the historical context of the women’s peace movement in Israel.

Paradigma Dalam Arkeologi Maritim, Mundardjito Mundardjito
Paradigma Dalam Arkeologi Maritim, Mundardjito Mundardjito
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper is based on a maritime archeological research that grounds itself on the preservation of archeological artefacts and maritime culture. Research on a number of drowned ships at the bottom of the sea and their cargo reveals the relationship between maritime culture and living regional communities. As a new paradigm in maritime archeology, its aim needs to be commensurate with the aim of the conservation efforts which is the empowerment of the communities themselves, and the communities outside of them, and needs to be oriented toward the interests of identity nurturance, development, and economy.

Membaca Poststrukturalisme Pada Karya Sastra, V. Irmayanti Meliono Budianto
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Poststructuralism can be employed as a method to analyse literary work. As text that contains literary expression of human life, literary work is open to interpretation and critical analysis. Pengembangan Bahan Ajar Bahasa Indonesia Untuk Penutur Asing (Bipa) Berdasarkan Hasil Analisis Kebutuhan Belajar, Imam Suyitno
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Teaching Indonesian for Foreign Learners or Indonesian as a Foreign Language (IFL) is different from teaching Indonesian as a first language. The differences are due to the characteristics of the learners. IFL learners generally are adults who have language and cultural background and learning style different from those Indonesian learners have. These differences demand IFL teachers and instructors to prepare teaching-learning materials and the activities of the teaching-learning process in the classroom that are relevant to the learners' needs. Understanding the entry level behavior of the learners, the teaching materials, the teaching-learning approach, and the evalution process is of crucial …

Ujian Nasional (Un): Harapan, Tantangan, Dan Peluang, Gunadi H. Sulistyo
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The National Examination (NE) has been conducted for several times nation-wide. However, public debates always emerge over the importance of NE prior to the annual excecution of the examination. The government's policy to raise the passing standard under the pretext of improving the quality of the national education has commonly triggered a heated controversy. This paper discusses the NE from the perspectives of expectations, challenges and opportunities. It attempts to provide an objective picture as to the need to hold NE. As such, it puts the attempts to improve the quality of the national education through NE in a proportionately …
Children’S Perceptions Of Mothers’ And Fathers’ Parental Rearing In White And Hispanic Families, Ariz Rojas-Cifredo
Children’S Perceptions Of Mothers’ And Fathers’ Parental Rearing In White And Hispanic Families, Ariz Rojas-Cifredo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study compared children's perceptions of mothers' and fathers' parental rearing styles in White and Hispanic families. Participants included 173 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade children recruited from after-school care programs in the School District of Hillsborough County, Florida. Children completed measures of perceived parenting for both mothers and fathers and a self-report inventory of their own current psychological symptoms. No differences between perceptions of parental acceptance in Hispanic and White families were expected. However, perceptions of hostile control were predicted to be higher for Hispanic fathers than for White fathers. In contrast, perceptions of maternal inconsistent discipline were …

Strategi Pembelajaran Bahasa Dan Sastra Indonesia Di Sekolah Dasar: Peran Guru Dalam Menyikapi Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan, Kushartanti Kushartanti
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Teaching Indonesian in formal schools today is regarded as a challenge by many Indonesian teachers. In a country like Indonesia, in which language situation is very complex due to many languages and dialects (and also the fast-growing English usage in big cities), this phenomenon can be understood. Since the country's independence, there have been several curricula-one of them is Kurikulum Berbasis Kompetensi (competence-based curriculum), the newest being Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (Unit Level of Education-Based Curriculum). The latter seems to be regarded as the most ideal curriculum, because it can be adjusted to the regions' policy. The problems are that …
If They Can Raze It, Why Can't I? A Constitutional Analysis Of Statutory And Judicial Religious Exemptions To Historic Preservation Ordinances, Erin Guiffre
Georgetown Law Historic Preservation Papers Series
In 1996, America almost lost a great piece of its history. The Cathedral of Saint Vibiana, located in Los Angeles, was in danger of being destroyed. The "Baroque-inspired Italianate structure" was completed in 1876 by architect Ezra F. Kysor. The cathedral is one of only a few structures from Los Angeles' early history remaining. As an important part of history and a beautiful piece of architecture, the cathedral was listed on California's register of historic places. In 1994, an earthquake damaged part of the building. After an inspection by the building and safety department in 1996, the only portion of …

Writers Of The Harlem Renaissance At Odds: Wright And Hurston's Different Approaches, Sarah L. Labbe
Writers Of The Harlem Renaissance At Odds: Wright And Hurston's Different Approaches, Sarah L. Labbe
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
This thesis speaks about “The Harlem Renaissance”, which is generally believed to have begun in the 1920’s, ending in the late 1930’s just before the Great Depression. During the Harlem Renaissance black people began to express themselves as a distinct culture. This expression took on many different forms; visual arts, music, literature, and theater. There were two general phases of the Harlem Renaissance. The first phase, 1921-1924, was the “Propaganda phase…to reveal the humanity of—and, thereby, validate—the African-American race through the strength of its arts and letters” (West 202). Thus this early stage was to show that blacks were feeling …
