On November 1, 1860, America was five days away from the election that would decide the next President, and ultimately, the fate of the nation. In Illinois, emotions ran high, and citizens had regularly turned out at political gatherings in full force to endorse their presidential favorite. Both Democrats and Republicans were confidant that the election of their candidate would save the Union, and the election of the opponent would plunge the country into civil war. China's internal condition immediately following the end of Japanese occupation was complicated and precarious. The conflicting interests of the Kuomintang and the Communists were pushing the nation into civil war and pressure from the United States only hastened the collapse of an already weak: internal structure. The Japanese occupation of China during the war had significant implications and affected the political fortunes of the Kuomintang and the Communists in diverse ways.

Initially, the War of Resistance against Japan promoted nationalism and Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese Communists united for the good of the nation. This unity, however, was short lived …

Cabaret: The Design And Production Process, Jennifer J. Owen '01

The textbook definition of initial design work breaks down the process into seven basic steps: commitment, analysis, research, incubation, selection, implementation, and reflection. Though it is obvious that a realized design is not as simple as this breakdown, the definition provides a useful starting point for conversation about design. It is important to note that though this model makes the design process appear linear in nature, each of the steps in the process occurs throughout many different phases of the design. I will refer this definition of the design process throughout my discussion of Cabaret.

「敘述」（Narration）是作者的權力自我限制的一個過程。作者對一篇小說的底本，是無所不知，可以掌握所有資料的，但作者不能（不會）把一切資料都放在文本裡敘述出來。作者如何去選取甚麼可以說的，甚麼應該說的，如何去寫， 如何去敘述這個底本，便是構成一篇小說好與壞的重要因素：能不能恰當地敘述，或與別不同，或技巧出眾等等。易言之，好的敘述，也是一個權力自我限制得恰當的過程。

當作者意圖創作一篇小說，或者是讀者希望閱讀一篇小說，最初步便要選取 ／瞭解這篇小說是用那一種類的「敘述人稱」。敘述人稱最簡單及最直接的分類方法，便是以人稱代詞來劃分。故此，敘述人稱可以分作三種：「第一人稱（即 運用代詞『我』／『我們』）」敘述，「第二人稱（運用代詞『你』／『你們』）」 敘述及「第三人稱（運用代詞『他』／『他們』）」敘述。作者選取那一種敘述人稱便是權力自我限制的第一步，這決定了敘述者（Narrator）1的身份，及他的敘述視角（point of view）。

在這篇論文中，我希望討論「敘述人稱」中的「第二人稱敘述」。我希望探討「第二人稱敘述」與當代中文小說的關係，研究「第二人稱敘述」在當代中文 小說中起了甚麼樣的功能。這篇論文會分作三個部份，第一部份是在當代中文小說中找出運用第二人稱敘述的作品，探討這些作品在運用第二人稱敘述時有沒有甚麼不同的地方；若有不同，再歸納分類。第二部份是以第一部份分類後不同類型的作品作基楚，重新探索第二人稱敘述的定義及特質。第三部份是研究在當代中文小說中，這些不同類型的作品，展現了甚麼樣的特別的功能。

Yemen at the advent of Islam and in the ensuing centuries is a little known entity in our contemporary world. A thousand years ago when Baghdad was capital of the Islamic empire under the Abbasid caliphs, Yemen was a flourishing center of agriculture and trade. By camel caravan north to central Islamic lands and in maritime trade with India to the east and Africa across the straits, Yemen's ports of call along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden were emporia for textiles, dyestuffs, and incense.

Buddhist literature in Thai can be divided as follows: translation of Buddhist literature originally composed in other language, and Buddhist literature originally composed in Thai. The first category consists of works translated from the Buddhist canon such as the Tripitaka and, the Arthhakatha. The famous Dhammapada belongs to this category. This category also includes translations into Thai of Pali works by the famous monks of the Lanna kingdom. Examples include the Chamadevivangsa and the Jinakalamali. The second category consists of literature originally composed in Thai, and its chief exemplar is the Traiphum, written by King Lithai during the Sukhothai period. …
