Dialectics And The Dao: On Both, A And Non-A In Neutrosophy And Chinese Philosophy, Feng Liu, Florentin Smarandache

This paper introduces readers to a new approach to dialectical logic: neutrosophy. Specifically it proposes a multi-valued logic in which the statement “both A and Non-A,” historically rejected as logically incoherent, is treated as meaningful. This unity of opposites constitutes both the objective world and the subjective world –a view with deep roots in Buddhism and Daoism, including the I-Ching. This leads in turn to the presentation of a framework for the development of a contradiction oriented learning philosophy inspired by the Later Trigrams of King Wen in the I-Ching. This study addressed the use of certain noncognitive variables and their relationship to the academic achievement and persistence rate of African-American freshmen students attending a large, predominately white institution. Academic achievement was defined as a student's cumulative college grade point average and cumulative credits earned at the end of the freshmen year of study. Persistence rate was defined as the number of freshmen who enrolled compared to the percentage of those who re-enrolled for the Fall semester of their sophomore year. U.R. Ananthamurthy is an important Kannada writer who is situated in the navya (modern) literary movement that emerged in Karnataka in the post-independence South Indian context. This modern writer's works provide crucial insights into the postcolonial tensions of tradition-modernity, which figure importantly in modern Kannada literature. They engage with the issues of caste and gender in terms of the conflict between tradition and progress in the modern South Indian cultural discourse. Renaissance creativity and obsession with classical traditions spawned a new form of horsemanship called the manege in sixteenth-century Europe. This study deals with England's rejection of the courtly horsemanship despite the dismal state of the nation's equestrian affairs. Tudor and Stuart monarchs utilized royal influence to attempt change - from legislative refmms to the horses - but no specific monarchical effort proved immediately effective. The significance of royal influence is seen in the continued importation of quality stock and in royal support for equestrian-related sports. Dorothy Arzner was the first woman to join the Director's Guild of America and one of the only directors to amass a catalog of eighteen films. Despite the respect she managed to win in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s, a stylistic auteur study has never been completed of many of her films. In this thesis, I review seven of Arzner' s films to uncover her stylistic sense of direction and editing to define her status as an auteur. My research attempts to identify certain phenomena that are directly related to the basic concepts of the axiom which describes the unique process of modernization in Latin America as follows: Premodernity, modernity and postmodernity coexist in Latin American culture, creating a condition of ambiguity and multiple identity. I have found that Multi-temporality, the coexistence of several ages in the same space, has been the most important phenomenon in the development of all Latin American countries. One question sure to stir up a spirited discussion in any gathering of galdosistas is whether Benito Perez Galdos's Dofia Perfecta is finally able to transcend the tendentiousness of its own ideological leanings. 1 A long tradition of criticism of the novel faults its didacticism and questions whether its characters are endowed with any real depth (see Penuel 80-86). Stephen Gilman's observation that Dona Perfecta constitutes an "ideological Flatland" by comparison with the depth of Galdos's mature works nicely captures an intuition chat runs deeply among defenders and critics of the novel alike (378-79). A complete analysis of the full range of usage patterns for all forms of strait and straight in the Book of Mormon provides sufficient contextual evidence for resolving the orthographical problems that were introduced through these homophones in the manuscripts and the 1830 edition. The article lists all 27 occurrences of some form of straight in the 1830 edition, indicating which ones were changed to strait and in which LDS editions they were revised. The evidence, we believe, indicates that most of these later changes were correct. But because the Book of Mormon usage introduced by Nephi was distinctive, and …

The infamous extermination order issued 27 October 1838 by Missouri Governor Lilburn W. Boggs caused thousands of Latter-day Saints to flee the state and seek refuge in Illinois across the Mississippi River. Illinois, established in 1817, had high hopes for its future, but just two decades later it was smitten, like the rest of America, with the economic depression of 1837. In such a needy condition, the people Illinois welcomed the Mormon migrants for three central reasons. We were watching Remember the Titans, a fine movie about Coach Herman Boone's first year as head football coach of the newly integrated football team at T. C. Perhaps the most traditional, conservative bastions of literature in America are those that are home to the thousands of high school Advanced Placement English classes throughout the United States. In these classrooms, diligent students and teachers study "literature of enduring quality" in preparation for the rigorous AP English literature examination given each spring. Typically the curriculum of these courses relies heavily on the classics: works by Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Hugo, Austen, Hawthorne, Hemingway, and the rest of the authors enshrined in literature's pantheon. When I first started teaching, grammar education was specifically addressed in my district's learning objectives: students will identify adjectives and adverbs; they will diagram subjects and direct objects. As a new teacher, I did my best to meet the objectives. I tried to make the content interesting and, somehow, connected to writing: we wrote clues for treasure hunts using prepositional phrases and descriptions of our own 'wild things" (a la Maurice Sendak) with elaborate adjectives. Research on the influence of gender on language across different cultures has mostly concentrated on qualitative measures of analysis. These measures demonstrate that there are differences in rhetorical and literary style across world Englishes in both and outer circle. Using Biber's multidimensional analysis (1988) to examine a large corpus of world English literatures written in Indian, West African, Britain, Anglo-American and Mexican American varieties of English, this paper examines whether quantitative analyses can also be insightful and useful in the examination of the influence of gender on language and in expanding our understanding of what "bilingual creativity" entails. In this thesis I explore the inequalities between men and women in relation to marriage and the impact ofexternal pressures on women and their choices within their marriages. I interviewed five married women and one woman in a common-law relationship about the story of their marriage. I used narrative analysis to interpret the verbatim transcriptions of each interview. In the findings I present portions of each woman’s story in her words along with my own interpretative comments. Globalization is nothing new. Global trade has been going on for millennia—though what constitutes the "globe" has expanded dramatically in that time. And trade is nothing if not cultural exchange, the narrow distinctions between the economic and the cultural having long been rendered obsolete. Moreover, our forbears, like us, were great "miscegenators." If here I gloss the racialized and gendered violence often associated with miscegenation, I do so strategically to note that all recourse to purity, indigeneity, or aboriginality—however useful strategically—should be subject to at least as much scrutiny as the easy romance with hybridity (see Mitchell 1997). Using our experiences as members of a participatory action research committee (from the City University of New York Graduate Center and the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility) documenting the impact of college in a maximum security prison, this essay illustrates the power of Participatory Action Research in the construction of counter stories. We raise for discussion a set of theoretical, methodological and ethical challenges that emerged from the co-production of counter stories under surveillance: the creation of a critical space for producing 'counter knowledge'; the co-mingling of counter and dominant discourses, the negotiation of power over and within research in prison, …
