“Haven’T We Come To Kill The Spaniards?” The Tule Upheaval In Eastern Panama, 1727-1728, Ignacio Gallup-Diaz

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

Investigates a Tule Indian uprising that took place in eastern Panama in 1727. The Indians' motivations for this uprising were varied and complicated and not simply the result of the instigations of mestizo pirate Luis García (as was alleged by the governor of Darién and historians, who have read his account of the events). The violence that spread across the isthmus was caused by the instability inherent in the Spanish colonial policy of tribalization. This policy relied on the Spanish authorities' co-opting men who claimed to be tribal leaders. These leaders, however, were unable to contain the Indians once they …

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Hospitals and individual caregivers helped meet the physical and psychological needs of medieval people, just as they do today. My overall objective is to explain social and individual responses to disease within the context of Christian theology and the urban community, focusing on England and Germany in the period between 1250 and 1450. First I investigate social responses to disease, including hospitals and public health ordinances. Christianity mandated the care of the afflicted, yet physical and mental illness was associated with sin and divine punishment. Urban authorities often attempted to deal with plague outbreaks by imposing quarantines and strict regulations …

The frontier period of the Kanawha Valley provides an interesting example of the sometimes dramatic change that occurred on the fringes of American civilization as it inched across the continent. Within twelve years of the creation of the county, it had developed from an embattled military buffer region into a quiet backwoods town. For the first six years, Indian attacks constantly assailed the settlements along the Kanawha River. Very likely, without the quality of leadership in the towns and military posts, the population would have retreated into safer regions of Virginia.
