In discussing Bonheur d'occasion Patrick Coleman has identified Gabrielle Roy's difficulty finding a vehicle to convey convincingly her insight that "an awareness of separation is a necessary condition of any moment of real connection" as one of her chief esthetic problems (77). Her successful negotiation of this tension in La Route d'Altamont owes much to presenting consolation as an antidote to separation. First, rather than deny the reality of separation, consolation mediates between it and union by allowing Roy to portray separation coexisting with communion; even the most stable consolations must be constantly renewed since consolation is more a process …

Georgia Myking was born on 25 July 1918 on a farm outside the small town of Polk City, Iowa. She attended high school in Polk City before moving to Cloquet, Minnesota, in August 1937. She soon met her future husband, Lawrence Myking, and they were married in Cloquet on New Year's Eve 1937. Georgia and Lawrence lived briefly on a small farm on the outskirts of Cloquet before moving into town during the war years. While Lawrence worked as a machinist for a local manufacturer, Georgia worked as a homemaker and raised four children. After the war the Mykings continued …

Dissertations and Theses

The present study examines the local influences on the ballads on the Eastern Sephardic Jews. With very few exceptions, these influences are from the Turkish language and from Modern Greek folk balladry. Therefore, I have divided the results of my findings into these two categories.

In the section concerning Sephardic ballads influenced by Greek folk poetry, I synthesize and expand upon the findings of Samuel Armistead and Joseph Silverman, who have combed through more than one hundred different Greek ballad collections to determine how these have influenced the Sephardic romancero. In Sitio a Eros and El coloquio de las perras, Rosario Ferré turns the traditional Spanish American essay into a most propitious space to investigate issues of gender and more specifically, writing as a potential vehicle for women's ultimate liberation. In these two books, in which the line between literary criticism and feminist criticism is hard to separate, she joins the ranks of writers such as Gabriela Mistral, Victoria Ocampo and Rosario Castellanos, Latin America's best-known female predecessors in the essay.

Even before the Civil War broke out, pro-slavery and abolitionist groups were fighting for the future of slavery in the state of Missouri. Jayhawkers took the abolitionist cause into their own hands, and border ruffians did the same for slavery. When war eventually broke out, it was therefore fought by and against the people and characterized by guerrilla activity. Some of these guerrillas, like Quantrill and Anderson, had histories of criminal activities, whereas others, like the James brothers and Cole Younger, went on to further influence American history after the war.
