Water From The Moon, Christopher A. Duggan Jan 2000

Water From The Moon, Christopher A. Duggan

Theses

During the scalding, dry summer of 1988, it would appear 23-year-old Dennis Dearbome is at a crossroads. More accurately, he is not on a road of any kind. The only child of affluent parents in suburban Minneapolis, Dennis finds his carefree existence at home unceremoniously ended when, after a string of lost jobs on his part, his parents decide to evict him from their house. At the same time, his father, an influential bank president, lands him a position as an illustrator for a small greeting card company. Dennjs can handle the technical demands of the job because of a …

Children's Literature: Reflections Of The Past, Gina M. Mcandrew

Theses

Thirty picture books for children were reviewed in this study. They were compared on the basis of character development. plot. illustrations. technical aspects and marketability. By using these divisions, parallels were drawn among outstanding works which were then compared to the book written in chapter four.

Results showed that many of the outstanding picture books have withstood the test of time. Their longevity is reflected in their ability to entertain and engross the targeted reader. The task for authors of new books is to capture these time-tested, endearing qualities, ensuring success in the publishing industry.

A Structure-Model For The Hamlet-Tradition, Christopher Scott Chiron Jan 2000

A Structure-Model For The Hamlet-Tradition, Christopher Scott Chiron

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The "hero-as-fool" structure-model for the Hamlet-story proposed by William F. Hansen is modified into an "Amlethan" structure-model with five major elements: ( 1) the Usurpation; (2) the First Test (of the Maiden); (3) the Second Test (of the Mother); (4) the Third Test (of the Journey); and (5) the Revenge. The first and last elements emphasize the "avenging son" aspect of the story whereas the middle three elements emphasize the "hero-as-fool" aspect. The Amlethan structure-model is then re-applied to the two "essential" texts in the tradition, Saxo Grammaticus' narrative of Amleth (c. 1200) and William Shakespeare's play Hamlet (c. 1600). …

The Putdown: Intergenerational Communicative Dynamics Of Male Characteristics In The Plays Of August Wilson, Bryan C. Moore Jan 2000

The Putdown: Intergenerational Communicative Dynamics Of Male Characteristics In The Plays Of August Wilson, Bryan C. Moore

Graduate Research Papers

Most African-American playwrights use realistic dialogue and monologues in their plays to share messages and stories about African-American culture, history, and society with others. One of the most popular and successful African-American playwrights today is August Wilson. His plays are a plethora of storytelling, and makes use of strong dialogue. Wilson displays elements of African-American culture and history in each of his plays, mostly through interaction and conversations between the characters. Wilson's plays are part of a larger project known as the twentieth-century cycle, in which each play represents a decade of African-American history and culture.

Colonial Violence And Trauma In The Works Of Michèle Lacrosil And Ken Bugul, Marie-Chantal Kalisa Jan 2000

Colonial Violence And Trauma In The Works Of Michèle Lacrosil And Ken Bugul, Marie-Chantal Kalisa

French Language and Literature Papers

To what extent can we say that both Lacrosil and Bugul rewrite Fanon? Through the study of Cajou and Ken, respectively the Guadeloupean and the Senegalese female protagonists, this article proposes a way to derive a specifically female perspective on colonial violence. The essay focuses on the two novels, Cajou and Le baobab fou, and examines the effect of colonial epistemological violence and its specific impact on the black female’s subjectivity. The protagonists Ken and Cajou revisit their initial trauma in a quest for knowledge of their historical heritage and engage in a dialogue with Frantz Fanon, representative of black …

Christian Hebrew Printing In The Sixteenth Century: Printers, Humanism And The Impact Of The Reformation, Stephen G. Burnett Jan 2000

Christian Hebrew Printing In The Sixteenth Century: Printers, Humanism And The Impact Of The Reformation, Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Christian printers of Hebrew books have long been recognized as a crucial factor in the spread of Christian Hebraism in early modern Europe. Their works have traditionally been listed together with Jewish books in bibliographies such as Moritz Steinschneider's catalogue of books on Hebrew language instruction, and the Bodleian library's collection Hebrew imprints since both contain Hebrew type, but grouping them together also blurs their distinctive features. Yet the business of Hebrew printing for Christians differed in character from Jewish printing in a variety of ways. In this essay I will analyze the geographic distribution of non-Jewish Hebrew printing firms …

It Takes A Woman To Play A Real Man: Clara As Hero(Ine) Of Beaumont And Fletcher’S Love’S Cure, Anne Duncan Jan 2000

It Takes A Woman To Play A Real Man: Clara As Hero(Ine) Of Beaumont And Fletcher’S Love’S Cure, Anne Duncan

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

My analysis of Love’s Cure follows Jonathan Dollimore’s distinction between two kinds of transgression to be found in literary artifacts: “humanist transgression” and “transgressive reinscription.” The goal of humanist transgression is to escape or transcend the social/ideological construct it opposes. It anticipates Romantic and idealistic notions of freedom and subjectivity. Modern critics often tend to view humanist transgression as the only “real” transgression; Dollimore cites as an example of this view Linda Woodbridge’s disappointment with the seemingly proto-feminist rhetoric of the Hic Mulier figure. In Woodbridge’s view, Hic Mulier’s assertion of gender equality is undermined by the fact that she …

Review Of Masada Vi: Yigael Yadin Excavations 1963–1965. Final Reports: Hebrew Fragments From Masada, By Shemaryahu Talmon; And The Ben Sira Scroll From Masada, By Yigael Yadin., Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

This is the sixth volume of the final report of the late Yigael Yadin’s excavations on Masada from 1963-1965. The trustees of Yadin’s literary legacy, the late N. Avigad, J. Amiran, and A. Ben-Tor, are publishing not only the final reports on Masada, but also on Hazor and Nahal Hever. They are to be commended for the fine quality of their work. The present volume includes the publication of the fragmentary Hebrew manuscripts found on Masada, which Yadin entrusted to Prof. Shemaryahu Talmon of the Hebrew University before his death in 1984. These documents include seven biblical manuscripts: one manuscript …

A Tender Fury: Zapatismo And The Predicament Of The Rural Peasantry And Indigenous Peoples Of Mexico, Alicia Rachelle Balassa Jan 2000

A Tender Fury: Zapatismo And The Predicament Of The Rural Peasantry And Indigenous Peoples Of Mexico, Alicia Rachelle Balassa

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The primary objective of my research is to investigate and do a thorough analysis into the current status and problems facing Mexico’s rural and indigenous peoples. The Zapatista Movement within the state of Chiapas serves as a barometer for the fragile and ever increasingly endangered life ways of the rural peasantry throughout rural Mexico as they struggle to maintain their culture and hold onto their dignity and land. For many this means their indigenous heritage as well. For much of the rural peasantry land and dignity and cultural identity go hand in hand, with the land being the vital link …

A Survey Of Iowa High School Band Directors And Their Students On The Occurrences Of Performing On A Musical Instrument While Experiencing Pain, Crystal M. Franzen Halverson Jan 2000

A Survey Of Iowa High School Band Directors And Their Students On The Occurrences Of Performing On A Musical Instrument While Experiencing Pain, Crystal M. Franzen Halverson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Learning to play a musical instrument is a challenging and exciting venture for many children. Lessons are the primary means for children to learn to play a musical instrument. Some begin studying an instrument through private lessons and others through a Suzuki program. Many other children begin their study of a musical instrument in the public school system with a music teacher in elementary, junior high, or middle school. Regardless of how one begins to learn to play a musical instrument, by the time high school is reached, it is conceivable that he or she will have had at least …

Wittgenstein And The Grammar Of Physics: A Study Of Ludwig Wittgenstein's 1929-1930 Manuscripts And The Roots Of His Later Philosophy, Anton Alterman Jan 2000

Wittgenstein And The Grammar Of Physics: A Study Of Ludwig Wittgenstein's 1929-1930 Manuscripts And The Roots Of His Later Philosophy, Anton Alterman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In 1929 Wittgenstein began to work on the first philosophical manuscripts he had kept since completing the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (TLP) in 1918. The impetus for this was his conviction that the logic of the TLP was flawed: it was unable to account for the fact that a proposition that assigns a single value on a continuum to a simple object thereby excludes all assignments of different values to the object (the "color exclusion" problem). Consequently Wittgenstein's "atomic propositions" could not be logically independent of one another.

Initially he thought he could replace the "logically perfect language" of the TLP with …

Painted Slang: The Caricatural Aspects Of French Painting, 1850–1880, Melina V. Kervandjian Jan 2000

Painted Slang: The Caricatural Aspects Of French Painting, 1850–1880, Melina V. Kervandjian

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

A complicated relationship between painting and caricature emerged in France in the 1850s and 1860s when writers like Baudelaire and Champfleury, who were known for their work on painting and painters, produced a number of texts focusing on caricature and caricaturists. Such writings legitimized imagery previously relegated to the realm of "low art" by declaring caricature integral to the aesthetic discourses of the nineteenth century.

The legitimization of caricature also involved a concurrent effort by artists like Honore Daumier, Gustave Courbet, and Paul Cezanne, who incorporated caricatural elements within their painted works. Rather than adopting the traditional strategy of marginalizing …

Ética Y Estética De La Narrativa Femenina Hispanoamericana Contemporánea: Un Diálogo Con Las Teorías Bajtinianas Del Discurso Literario, Aranzazu Borrachero Jan 2000

Ética Y Estética De La Narrativa Femenina Hispanoamericana Contemporánea: Un Diálogo Con Las Teorías Bajtinianas Del Discurso Literario, Aranzazu Borrachero

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study traces textual contradictions in the narrative of some contemporary female writers of Latin America: Isabel Allende's La casa de los espiritus (1982), Laura Esquivel's Como agua para chocolate (1989), Cristina Peri Rossi's "Desastres intimos" and "Entrevista con el Angel" (1997), Zoe Valdes' Te di la vida entera (1996), Eva Sefchovich's Demasiado amor (1990), Carmen Olle's Las dos caras del deseo (1994), and Sylvia Molloy's En breve carcel (1981).

I define "contradiction" as the coexistence of conflicting discourses within one narrative voice, i.e. discourses of love and violence, of romance and rape, of female strength and submission. I contend …

The Disappearance Of The Author And Chicana-Chicano Critical Discourse, Hector A. Torres Jan 2000

The Disappearance Of The Author And Chicana-Chicano Critical Discourse, Hector A. Torres

English Language and Literature Faculty Publications

In "Toward a Theory of Minority Discourses,"(1990), Abdul R. JanMohammed and David Lloyd address the complex question of the economy of the author-function as it affects minority writers in multicultural America today. Certainly there are faults in their narrative articulations as there are bound to be in any theory that moves towards a comprehensive grasp of its topic. But there is also much to praise in this work and even more than ten years later we can still learn a lot from it if we can put into practice many of the theoretical protocols they put into narrative. The aim …

The Influence Of Selected Noncognitive Variables On The Academic Success Of Urban Black High School Males In An Enrichment Pre-College Program, Leon Rouson Jan 2000

The Influence Of Selected Noncognitive Variables On The Academic Success Of Urban Black High School Males In An Enrichment Pre-College Program, Leon Rouson

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The thrust of this study was to examine the influence of selected noncognitive variables on the academic success of urban Black high school males in an enrichment Pre-College Program. The major research question was: Which of the selected noncognitive variables are most useful in predicting academic success for urban Black high school males?

This study reinvestigated Sedlacek and Brooks' (1976) proposed set of seven noncognitive variables related to academic success: (a) self-concept; (b) realistic self-appraisal; (c) understanding of and ability to deal with racism; (d) preference for long-term goals over more immediate, short-term needs; (e) availability of a strong support …

Inner Presence, Amy L. Bailey Jan 2000

Inner Presence, Amy L. Bailey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

What we believe constructs the person we are and will become, the ways and means we conduct our lives and form our sense of right and wrong at all levels inward and outward: politically, socially, and personally. My own beliefs, founded on my faith in God, have directed me in my work. This thesis exhibition is an exploration of how to express these beliefs visually. During my exploration, I had to alter and develop my own visual iconography to express my ideas of God. Conventional transcendent icons including the cross, the 1 Christ figure, and the Virgin Mary, have been …

The 1960 Presidential Election In Florida: Did The Space Race And The National Prestige Issue Play An Important Role?, Randy Wade Babish

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The landmark launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957, and the subsequent perception that the United States trailed the Soviet Union, not only in space but also in missiles, plagued the Eisenhower Administration for the rest of the decade. The Democratic Party strategy for the 1960 presidential election included using the space race, the alleged missile gap, and declining American prestige abroad to illustrate the need for new leadership in the White House. Senator John F. Kennedy, the Democratic nominee, effectively raised these issues throughout the general election to support his "New Frontier" program and won by the narrowest popular …
