A Study Of The Out-Of-Class Experiences Of Saint Mary's College Students Studying In Maynooth, Ireland, Carolyn S. Langley
Dissertations
Problem Statement. The purpose of this study is to describe the out-of-class experiences of 21 students who studied in the Saint Mary's College Ireland Program in Maynooth, Ireland, during the 1998-1999 academic year. It examines (1) how the program orientation influenced students' desire to become involved in out-of-class activities, (2) how out-of-class experiences fostered students' learning of the Irish culture, and (3) how the experiences influenced students' attitudes toward cultures other than their own.
Methodology. This study employed descriptive qualitative research. Focus groups were conducted to gather data used in developing questions for long interviews, and these long interviews …
Comparison And Evaluation Of The Moral Significance Of Emotions In Aquinas, The Manualists And Catholic Moral Theology 1960-1990, Thomas Ryan
Theses
This is a comparative study of the moral significance of emotions in Catholic Moral Theology. It is done with reference to Thomas Aquinas, to selected Manualist authors immediately prior to Vatican II, to representative Catholic theologians 1960-1990 and to a sample of contemporary writers from other disciplines. The project argues five points. Firstly, Aquinas sees emotions as designed to have a necessary and constructive significance in moral reasoning and moral development. In their habituated form as affective virtues, they enable a person to have the right emotional responses in terms of their object and intensity. Secondly, the Manualists, by a …

"This Is Not A Christ": Nietzsche, Foucault, And The Genealogy Of Vision, Gary Shapiro
"This Is Not A Christ": Nietzsche, Foucault, And The Genealogy Of Vision, Gary Shapiro
Philosophy Faculty Publications
There is nothing surprising about linking the names of Nietzsche and Foucault, something that Foucault himself frequently did. We know that the practices of archaeology and genealogy owe much to On the Genealogy of Morals; and in The Order of Things Foucault celebrates Nietzsche for being able to look beyond the epoch of "man and his doubles,'' thinking of the Obermensch as designating that which is beyond man, and for serving, along with Mallarme, as one of the prophets of the hegemony of language in the emerging episteme of the postmodern world. Here I want to focus on other affinities, …

Remembering Societal Trauma : Catastrophic Events Of The Twentieth Century In The Soviet Union And The Shaping Of Cultural Memory In Soviet Children's Political Literature, Sean Ozzie Simpkins
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Since the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, there have been several waves of interest in establishing more contemporary relations with Russia, punctuated by failure and frustration. Many who would deal with the Russians have little factual information concerning Russian history, and are guided largely by some combination of good will, self interest, and outmoded structural assumptions concerning Russia and the Russian experience (Wedel 1998). This ignorance, in turn, contributes to negative perceptual and behavioral responses on the part of the Russians to these overtures, and any that may follow. The result can lead to a misreading of intent and …

Jack Maggs : A Differend Convict(Ion) By Peter Carey, Timothy D. Langley
Jack Maggs : A Differend Convict(Ion) By Peter Carey, Timothy D. Langley
Theses : Honours
This thesis is an analysis of Peter Carey's novel Jack Maggs and its attempt at writing back to Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. I will analyse the (de)construction of language games between Jack Maggs and Great Expectations; show how Carey as a post-colonial settler writer writes back to the centre, to Dickens' text as a canonical Victorian novel, through intergrating the very notion of the Victorian novel, and in his own terms giving the convict a "history". I will explore how Carey writes competing language games of "science" and "narrative" (as identified by Lyotard) within Jack Maggs and how they produce …
Temas De Muerte E Identidad En Pasos Y Pasajero, Brian Taylor
Temas De Muerte E Identidad En Pasos Y Pasajero, Brian Taylor
Theses : Honours
Pasos y Pasajeros marked a transition from Uslar Pietri’s previous stories. Whilst retaining his accustomed rural geographical environment and civil war historical environment for some stories, he introduces us to urban landscapes and contemporary settings in many others. The anonymity of time and places in earlier works, gives way to defined places, periods and social environments, perhaps reflecting the evolution of Venezuela from a subsistence agrarian economy to a fledgling urban society, enabled by the exploitation of the country's oil reserves. In the works of Uslar Pietri, several themes predominate. Death and identity are two themes explored in this thesis, …
Monoglossic Policies For A Heteroglossic Culture: Misinterpreted Multilingualism In Modern Galicia, José Del Valle
Monoglossic Policies For A Heteroglossic Culture: Misinterpreted Multilingualism In Modern Galicia, José Del Valle
Publications and Research
This article critically discusses the representations of language that, since the 1980s, have been informing language policy in Galicia. Data from Galicia´s Sociolinguisic Map are re-analyzed and an argument is made that current language policies are grounded in a misinterpretation of how speakers map language on to identity.

Nouvelles Perspectives Sur De La Religion: Benjamin Constant Et La Franc-Maçonnerie, Helena Rosenblatt
Nouvelles Perspectives Sur De La Religion: Benjamin Constant Et La Franc-Maçonnerie, Helena Rosenblatt
Publications and Research

Malacca was indeed a unique Islamic civilization in the Malay Archipelago that dominated the region from 1400 to 1511. Malay, Portuguese, and British historiography records the greatness of this civilization, its civilizational impact in the region, and its fame that spread well beyond its frontiers. Nonetheless this civilization fell in the year 15 l I at the hands of the Portuguese imperialists. This study attempts to contextualize the fall of Malacca and the rise of the Portuguese power within lbn Khaldun's unique cyclical theory of the rise and fall of world civilizations. The introductory chapter states the scope of the …

The Japanese civilization is among distinctive civilization in technology and domination in economical aspect. Destruction in World War II and limited resource is not obstruction for Japanese to raise and give the competition to the western countries, especially the United States of America (USA). This is because their leaders are stressing on the Japanese education. The Japanese had assimilated the other civilization into its own civilization to make it strong in various aspects like faith, religion ethics and morale. These various aspects were explicated with the original religion of the Japanese such as Shintoism, Buddhism and Confucianism that were originated …
