A 1913 edition of the British magazine Puck features a two-page, full-color cartoon depicting Uncle Sam astride the Isthmus of Panama and the nearly completed Panama Canal. The cartoon also shows the pyramids of Egypt, the hanging gardens of Babylon, and other familiar human creations. Its caption reads, "The seven wonders of the world salute the eighth." Cradled in Uncle Sam's arm is a figure, a saluting, white-haired, white-suited mustachioed man with the name "Goethals" printed on his collar. This is my great-grandfather, chief engineer of the Panama Canal.

In the light of medical evidence of the health risks associated with boxing, a watchful agnostic position among sport physicians is no longer justifiable. The normal activity in a boxing match places the athletes at risk of head injury, some of which may be difficult to detect and impossible to repair. This suggests that sport physicians and others expert in the prevention and diagnosis of such injuries should take a public stand against boxing, as other medical associations have. Although there is a need for continuing research into the health risks, doctors can in the interim take steps to increase …

Carbonado: The History Of A Coal Mining Town In The Foothills Of Mount Rainier, 1880-1937, John Hamilton Streepy

The history of the coal mining town of Carbonado, Washington was studied. Starting from a brief description of the formation and discovery of coal in Western Washington, the fifty-seven year history of active coal mining was covered in this project. Topics included town leadership, coal mining peculiarities in the region, living in a company town, the plight of Chinese workers in the 1880s, and the labor strikes after World War I that led to the eventual closing of the mines. The project ended with a description of life in the town after major coal mining operations ended in 1937. Also …

Reports during the nineteenth century indicate that John Brougham was one of the best known actors of his day, but little study during the twentieth century has been made of his performance career. Today he is sometimes recognized as a playwright, probably because two of his plays have been included in anthologies of nineteenth-century plays, but he considered himself primarily an actor rather than playwright. While it has been acknowledged that he was never very successful financially in his repeated attempts at theatre managements, reasons for his lack of success have not been fully explored. The gathering of the Mormon pioneers to Utah (commencing in 1847) has received extensive attention; however, the earlier LDS immigration to Nauvoo has not been adequately treated. This paper is the inspiring story of the British Saints who traveled to Nauvoo between June 1840 and February 1846. The international call to gather was received by the Prophet Joseph Smith during the second presentation of the Restored Church, less than six months after its organization in 1830.

Citizenship is central to understanding the nature of Chinese migrants and their relationships within the social and political environment in Australia. Utilising the concept of citizenship can be a new way to interpret the human experience of the Chinese survival in Australia and to show that a historical balance can be found between the Australian social environment on the one side and the Chinese experience in Australia on the other. This thesis locates the writings of Dorothy Hewett in a firm relationship with postmodern thought. The argument focuses on evidence that the dominant aesthetic of Hewett's writing is the feminine sublime which comprises a commitment to uncertainty. In this modality, reason does not foreclose on the action of the imagination in the sublime moment. The revised dynamic is explored with an emphasis on the radical nature of the doubt in question. It reflects a deliberate resistance to certainty, and fol1ows from Hewett's early experience with communism. At a formal level, in Hewett's texts, the commitment to uncertainty is not least …

From 1948, when the Orthodox churches became members of the World Council of Churches, the "woman question" has been debated and researched through various assemblies, consultations and programmes. The general attitude of Orthodox Church hierarchs on the debate of the 'woman question' is that it is an imposition from the West and therefore any changes for the Church to be active in improving the status of women are not under serious consideration. This thesis has two main parts. The first comprises a collection of nineteen short stories, entitled The World-Swimmers. The second takes the form of an exegesis, 'Framing Fictions & Fictional Friendships,' which provides a critical commentary on the collection, and on the nexus of text and context. The stories vary in length from approximately 1,000 to over 4,000 words. Various writing styles are used to develop fictional explorations of a range of themes, which include: the relationship between the natural and the human worlds, the imbrication of local place and international space, obsession, entrapment, and desire. This is a qualitative, descriptive study of group processes in classes of adult language learners, viewed from the perspective of practising teachers. The study has an internal narrative which takes the reader through the process of the research, from the initial question raised by a casual classroom conversation to the discussion chapter which questions a number of assumptions underlying current English language teaching practices within western educational contexts. For religious couples, the spiritual domain stands alongside the biological, psychological, and systemic domains as an influence upon interaction and mechanism for change. This study is a quantitative expansion of Butler, Gardner, and Bird's (1998) qualitative study, of the change dynamics of prayer. This study attempted to improve the generalizability of the Butler et al. (1998) study through its use of a larger, and religiously and geographically more diverse sample. 本文主要是論述1917-1923 年聞發生的護法運動與海軍的關係。在長達六年的護法運動中，海軍扮演了一個非常重要的角色。從研究得知，海軍與護法運動的關係是錯綜複雜的，一方面海軍既是支持護法運動的重要力量，另一方面，它往往又是護法運動失敗的主因。故本人希望在本文中探討海軍在軍事、政治上如何影響護法運動，及分析海軍與護法運動的關係為何。

護法運動為我國近代史上的大事，是一次反對北洋軍閥專政、維護臨時約法的全國性運動，意義深遠。自海軍於1917 年南下護法後，它便反覆參予與叛離護法行列，徘徊於護法與附逆之間，海軍的取向對護法運動的成敗有關鍵性的作用。故此本文將分述海軍在六年的護法運動中，在政治、軍事上對護法運動的影響，以及它在第一次和第二次護法運動，以及護法護動結束時所起的作用。

從成長角度「閱讀」Beyond樂隊歌詞, Pak Shing Fan

從1986年起，Beyond樂隊的幾位成員(不包括88 年離隊的劉志遠)均堅持創作，儘管黃家駒於93年離世，但黃家強、黃貫中和葉世榮並沒有因此放棄，經歷十五個年頭，他們所的作品，隨著歲月而自趨成熟。

雖然Beyond也找劉卓輝、小美、林夕、黃偉文等人幫忙寫詞，而〈大地〉、〈長城〉、〈情人〉、〈真的愛你〉和〈預備〉等不少流行作品，亦非Beyond幾位成員所寫，但他們親自填詞的歌曲還是佔多數。不談Beyond 的國語、英語及其他語言歌曲，只算1986年來推出之粵語歌曲，總數為182首，其中由他們所創作或有份參與填詞的，共有113首，佔全部歌曲百分之六十二。

Beyond樂隊的音樂歷程，跟西方成長小說模式，儘有相似之處。他們大著膽子，闖進主流樂壇二，恰如成長小說中，年青主角跨入社會，經歷種種磨練，心智與情感漸漸成熟過來。從Beyond幾位成員之創作方向和內容裏，可發現他們成長所留下的痕跡。本文之目的，乃嘗試從他們的歌詞探索其成長之心路歷程。

本文前言部分，主要回顧香港過去的樂隊朝流發展，以及介紹Beyond樂隊的崛起和發展，為討論提供一點背景資料。按著，本文把他們所創作的歌曲，分作三個主越來討論：其一，自我的成長；其二，成長中的惰；其三，對社會的認識。最後為全文之總結。誠然，Beyond的作品中，有時候不只集中寫個主題，因此，上面的分類純粹為了方便行文討論，不當之處在所難免，讀者請見諒。
