Negotiating Cultural Boundaries: Confucianism And Trans/National Identity In Korea, William A. Callahan

This essay looks to the complex intercultural relations of China and Korea to highlight two important issues in political theory and international relations: the transnational nature of world politics and the limits of analytical binaries such as East‐West and tradition‐modernity. Discussions of international politics in East Asia characteristically address issues of security and development studies. More recently, Confucianism has been mobilized as part of the clash of civilizations of Asia with the West. At the end of the fifteenth century, Emperor Maximilian I of the Germany Empire was trying to unite his country. He also tried to force the Swiss Confederation to become closer members of the empire. This lead to the Swabian War of 1499. In a series of battles and campaigns, the Swiss were successful in defeating the famous Swabian Landsknechte who had learned to fight in the Swiss manner. As an outcome of the war, the Swiss Confederation were even more independent of the German Empire.

John Dewey, Art And Public Life, Mark Mattern

This article explores, criticizes, and extends John Dewey's arguments about art in relation to public life in a democracy. Dewey believed that art is a potent form of communication through which community is developed and political action undertaken. Although correct, Dewey erased conflict, negotiation and contestation From art, and failed to address the crucial role of power in the world of art. Three distinct kinds of political action through art are developed: pragmatic, deliberative, and confrontational.

Gathering To Nauvoo: Mormon Immigration 1840-46, Fred E. Woods

The gathering of the Mormon pioneers to Utah (commencing in 1847) has received extensive attention; however, the earlier LDS immigration to Nauvoo has not been adequately treated. This paper is the inspiring story of the British Saints who traveled to Nauvoo between June 1840 and February 1846. The international call to gather was received by the Prophet Joseph Smith during the second presentation of the Restored Church, less than six months after its organization in 1830.

I can't listen to Bob Carlisle's "Butterfly Kisses," a sentimental song about a father and his daughter without crying. Every time I hear it, I want to pull my nearest daughter onto my lap, hold her tight, and bury my face in her shoulder while I cry about the eventual loss of my little girl. Unfortunately—or fortunately, if you're one of my daughters—my maudlin reaction to the song prompted my three teenage daughters to ban the recording from our home, so I rarely got to listen to it—and weep—anymore.

Bilingual Creativity, Multidimensional Analysis, And World Englishes, Wendy Baker, William G. Eggington

Research in world English literatures has concentrated on qualitative measures of analysis in order to understand what is meant by `bilingual creativity.' These measures demonstrate that there are differences in rhetorical and literary style within world English literatures both in the inner and outer circle. Using Biber's multidimensional analysis (1988) to examine a large corpus of world English literatures written in Indian, West African, Britain, Anglo-American and Mexican American varieties of English, this paper examines whether quantitative analyses can also be insightful and useful in the examination of world English literatures in expanding our understanding of what `bilingual creativity' entails. …
