Ms. Reynolds researched and collected prominent documents of members of the Burnside family including a diary, newspaper clippings, articles, and books. Ms. Reynolds also collected an extensive amount of records of her ancestors including census records, war records, and records from the families’ origins in Great Britain. Nineteenth Century French And German Interpretations Of The Early Medieval Germanic Invasions, James N. Owens

Dissertations and Theses

Various interpretations of the Germanic invasions of the early Middle Ages have been advanced. These present to the student of historiography a fertile field for inquiry. In this thesis the interpretations of the Germanic invasions propounded by Jules Michelet (1798-1874) and Gustav Freytag (1816-1875) are examined with a view to establishing the cultural context in which their mutually exclusive versions were formulated, and the extent to which that context lent the interpretations of both writers a perceptible national and aesthetic bias.

PSI VIII 935, a receipt acknowledging payment of rent for land near the village of Phthla, was published in 1927. The editor in commenting on the text sought to connect it with two other papyri, both of them Phthla land leases: P. Flor. III 281 (A.D. 517) and P. Cair. Masp. I 67113 (dating clause lost at top). A third, related land lease is P. Lond. V 1689 (527). These three papyri form a small archive not obviously integral to the main set of papyri issuing from Aphrodite (modern Kom Ischkaw) and preserved in the sixth-century archive of Flavius Dioscorus. …

In the decade of the 1830's, Alexis de Tocqueville published a perceptive analysis of America in the Jacksonian era, which focused upon the customs, manners and intellectual habits of its citizens, and their social condition as seen through its political institutions. He advanced the proposition--a paradox of democracy--that equality of condition was as compatible with tyranny as with freedom. The social consensus, which stemmed from the wide acceptance of doctrine of equality and common wants and interests, when brought to bear upon legislator and judge, public official, juryman, and the non-conforming individual, he termed the "tyranny of the majority."

In this survey, women's roles (jobs) and their participation in the workforce in the Muslim Middle-Eastern countries will be discussed generally; moreover, some of the Middle-Eastern countries, such as Egypt and Iran, will be studied a little more specifically as a sample. The status of women, their education, skills, and profession, will be explained historically from the date of the Islamic period until today. In the fall of 1981 I came to the point in my studies where it became necessary to choose a thesis project. The standard procedure in the Department of Theatre at Virginia Commonwealth University is to have design students do set designs for one of the mainstage productions as their thesis project.

Children's art has been acknowledged as an important influence on twentieth-century art. Robert Goldwater states that the interest among artists in children's art during the early years of the Twentieth Century marked "a movement away from the exotic primitive toward indigenous sources of primitive inspiration." This new evaluation of children's art as a source of inspiration can be seen in the work of a number of artists including Joan Miró and Jean Dubuffet; their work, in particular, suggests the accent, freshness and energy inherent in the art of children.
