It is hoped that the contents of this thesis will help to provide a course of action through which the dramatic arts program may move closer to the objectives established for it by the HDRP administration. The dramatic arts program for adults, as set forth in the thesis, should create specific goals so that the HDRP may provide a consistent direction for the development of a dramatic arts program for adults. Ii. Michael Schlatter: A Man In Between: A Contribution To American Ecclesiastical And Secular History Of The Eighteenth Century, Marthi Pritzker-Ehrlich

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This biographical sketch of Michael Schlatter (1716-1790) presents a summary view on the basis of a doctoral dissertation which dealt mainly with his activities in Pennsylvania as commissioner of the Dutch-Reformed Church. Reverend Schlatter had moved to Pennsylvania at a time when thousands of Swiss and Germans were arriving in that North American province; as a Reformed minister, however, he belonged to a privileged elite among immigrants. He is a remarkable personality in eighteenth century American history because of his involvement in three areas.

The Renascence Of Classical Thought And Form In The Carolingian Period, Sara James Laster

The political stability established under the rule of Charlemagne (768-814) was conducive to the flourishing of the simultaneous resurgence of art and learning. Inspired by the achievements of the Roman Empire, Charlemagne wished to give his subjects a feeling of spiritual unity, a sense of continuity with the past, and an enhanced intellectual life. The classical intellectual tradition is traced from ancient times to the Carolingian present to demonstrate that classicism was a continuum. The thesis examines the classical tradition in the intellectual life of the Carolingian period, its conscious rejuvenation in the figurative arts, and its manifestation in the …

The Bridge

Few Danes in America have been as influential in Scandinavian American life as Claus Laurits Clausen. From his arrival in Wisconsin in 1843 until his retirement in Minnesota more than forty years later, C. L. Clausen was a central figure in the life of Norwegians and Danes throughout the United States of America. H. Fred Swansen' s biography remains the standard work on Clausen's life in English, but an earlier biography in Danish contains important documentary material, and there are numerous biographical sketches, including a particularly sensitive one by Clausen's son-in-law, Svein Strand.

Two Features Of Working-Class Phonology In Valladolid, Lynn Williams

Two factors prompted the research which led to the writing of this article: first, the apparent general consensus amongst linguists both inside and outside Spain that the phonology of Old Castilian is monolithic in terms of geographic and sodal space, and that it has more or less stagnated in the mould of traditional grammars, and, secondly, the insistence of many linguists on seeing some aspects of contemporary Spanish phonology as characteristic of certain non-standard varieties of Spanish, wilhout investigating whether the same features might not also be found in Old Castile.

The Pronunciation Of Women: Some Spanish Evidence, Lynn Williams

The material for this article bas been drawn from a larger sociolinguistic survey of various aspects of tbe phonology of 18-26 yr olds in Valladolid carried out between October 1976 and April 1977. The methodology used is basically the same as that developed by William Labov for his New York survey and has become one of the most established methods of enquiry into the social differentiation of the phonology of urban speech-communities. Informants were selected from the Valladolid census records in a semi-random manner and assigned to their socio-economic class according to the criteria of Spanish sociologists. Each informant was …
