The James H. Dooley Mansion : A Richmond Example Of The Richardsonian Romanesque Style, Vera Twiggs Underwood
Theses and Dissertations
The Dooley estate, Maymont, is located at 1700 Hampton Street in Richmond, Virginia. Once a dairy farm, the approximately 105-acre home site is adjacent to the popular Byrd Park and overlooks the James River. In this paper I have researched the architectural construction of the Dooley mansion and its significance to the Richmond area with regards to the Dooleys, their art collections, and their interest in European trends.

If a computer is trying to translate Latin into English, what can it possibly do with the dative and ablative plurals, which are all identical? Or, if the text is prose and lacks the long marks, what is it to do with all those pesky first declension -a ’s?
These are human problems, too, for we have all had the experience of having to slow down while we tried out the different possibilities on a final -a. So what’s good for the computer is also good for the human’s Latin reading speed, and the human’s appreciation of good …

A recent newspaper story suggests a significant change in the attitude of some baseball fans. While the phenomenon of harassment of players from the stands is not new, there seems to be a new spirit behind the hurling of bottles and other dangerous debris. Whereas such attacks were once motivated by scorn for poor performance or by a violent enthusiasm for the opposing team, spectators are now also apparently moved by envy. They are, according to a number of sportswriters, jealous and resentful of the high salaries and prestige of professional ballplayers. No doubt envy is an ancient phenomenon, but …

A Translation Into English Of The German Novel Jakob Der LüGner By Jurek Becker, Harriet Passell
A Translation Into English Of The German Novel Jakob Der LüGner By Jurek Becker, Harriet Passell
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis is a translation of the German novel Jakob der Lugner by Jurek Becker. In my commentary I have tried to explain why I undertook the project of translating this novel from German into English, when that had already been done by Melvin Kornfeld. Kornfeld's translation, which is no longer in print, fails to do justice to Jurek Becker's style and changes a story of heartwarming simplicity, humor and psychological insight into a somewhat tedious account of the life in a ghetto during World War II.
Tillamook Indian Basketry : Continuity And Change As Seen In The Adams Collection, Ailsa Elizabeth Crawford
Tillamook Indian Basketry : Continuity And Change As Seen In The Adams Collection, Ailsa Elizabeth Crawford
Dissertations and Theses
In the Adams Collection at the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, Tillamook, Oregon, there are 29 baskets that were probably made between 1880 and 1940. They are mostly of raffia, are somewhat faded from their original, bright, commercial colors, and are generally quite small. Despite the fact that these baskets are well-documented and were made by Tillamook women, they are the sort that have been overlooked by anthropologists and by collectors because of their non-"traditional" appearance. In order to determine what relationship these baskets have to Tillamook basketry made earlier, I analyzed them and 39 Tillamook baskets from four other museum …
The Heritage Of Faith: An Historical Evaluation Of The Holiness Movement In America, Craig Charles Fankhauser
The Heritage Of Faith: An Historical Evaluation Of The Holiness Movement In America, Craig Charles Fankhauser
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
This work traces the holiness movement from the Biblical Day of Pentecost, when the disciples of Christ first received the Holy Spirit, to the founding of independent holiness denominations in the first two decades of the twentieth century. In the eighteenth century the main emphasis of this perfectionists movement centered around the teachings of an Anglican priest, John Wesley. Wesleyan doctrine stressed two distinct religious experiences--justification (God forgiving individuals their sins) and sanctification. The latter cleansed the believer's heart from original sin and made him ready for heaven.
American holiness proponents founded the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1784 and in …

Dreamworlds And The Art Of Illustration, Donna Crotchett
Dreamworlds And The Art Of Illustration, Donna Crotchett
Masters Theses
While I was growing up, illustrations made deep impressions upon me. An illustration is a picture that explains and adds interest to the written part of a printed work such as a book. Often overlooked by others, for various reasons, this means of communication played a significant part in my life and art.
The history of illustration is a history of men and women, serious artists, who have produced an enormous amount of high-quality work. Many of their illustrations had their origins in fine art such as early religious painting and mythological themes. A large number of fine artists have …
