The Musical Language Of Kindertotenlieder No. 2, V. Kofi Agawu
The Musical Language Of Kindertotenlieder No. 2, V. Kofi Agawu
Publications and Research
Three times during his compositional career, Mahler turned to the medium of the orchestral song cycle either to experiment with or to refine certain technical procedures. This resulted in a variety of methods for establishing large-scale tonal coherence, using song as a resource for later symphonic composition, and stylizing folk material, melodically and rhythmically. These compositional techniques are clearly exemplified in Mahler's three cycles, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (1883-85), Kindertotenlieder (1901-04), and Das Lied von der Erde (1907-08).
Christopher Caudwell And His Critics: A Study Of Caudwell's Philosophy Of Art And The Critical Response, Thomas Riggins
Christopher Caudwell And His Critics: A Study Of Caudwell's Philosophy Of Art And The Critical Response, Thomas Riggins
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis deals with the philosophy of art of the British Marxist, Christopher Caudwell. It begins with a general discussion of the intellectual environment of Caudwell's day–i.e., the 1920s and 30s in Europe and especially in England. It then procedes to a presentation of Caudwell's basic philosophical position with major emphasis on his work Illusion and Reality. This is followed by a review of the critical assessment Caudwell's ideas evoked and a number of detractors and supporters are discussed. Special attention is then placed on a review of the aesthetic theory of Socialist Realism and Caudwell's relation to it. …

The Rib In The Book Of Job, John Maclaren Evans
The Rib In The Book Of Job, John Maclaren Evans
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This study shows that the Book of Job can be understood as the record of a rib between Job and Yahweh, which involves ultimately the issue of the relationship of man and God. A definition of the term rib is first established by reviewing its occurrences in the other books of the Old Testament. Although it includes a wide range of contention, the term signifies essentially a legal complaint initiated by an aggrieved party, convinced of the rectitude of his position, against the party whom he holds responsible for the grievance. Ribs occur in both non-secular and secular contexts, the …

Increasing Staff Use Of Sign Language, Melanie Hepworth Neville
Increasing Staff Use Of Sign Language, Melanie Hepworth Neville
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effectiveness of two procedures, a visual cue and performance posting, to modify the use of sign language by psychiatric technicians. The visual cue was first introduced alone, then paired with performance posting to encourage staff use of sign language with the developmentally disabled children in their charge. Application of the visual cue alone produced little change in staff sign useage. The visual cue plus performance posting condition increased staff use of sign language during mealtimes. Four weeks of follow-up data indicated that the use of sign language remained at a level well above baseline.
The Biblical Concept Of Man And Its Implications For Christian Religious Instruction, Helmut Ott
The Biblical Concept Of Man And Its Implications For Christian Religious Instruction, Helmut Ott
Dissertations
Problem
A reliable understanding of the nature of man is essential for the formulation of the theoretical framework and for the actual practice of religious education. The purpose of this dissertation is to make an in-depth study of the biblical concept of man and to elaborate on some of its most significant implications for Christian religious instruction.
Method
The study is divided into two major sections. The first one (chs. 2-4) analyzes the biblical concept of man from three different perspectives; man as he was initially created by God; man in his present condition as a sinner; and man as …
A Study Of Teacher Motivation In Five Selected Seventh-Day Adventist Colleges In The United States, Allen F. Stembridge
A Study Of Teacher Motivation In Five Selected Seventh-Day Adventist Colleges In The United States, Allen F. Stembridge
Dissertations
Problem. The purpose of this study was to determine what positive and negative motivating factors affect teachers at Seventh-day Adventist colleges, to determine if these factors are different for public university teachers as identified in a similar study by Morgan, and to determine what factors influenced teachers to accept an appointment at an Adventist college.
Method. Respondents were asked to describe positive or negative incidents that related to their jobs as teachers and to answer twenty forced-choice-structured questions to indicate their level of satisfaction of dissatisfaction. The critical incidents were coded within a set of categories adapted for …
The Implications Of The Piagetian Stages To Readiness For Baptism, Daniel Gutekunst
The Implications Of The Piagetian Stages To Readiness For Baptism, Daniel Gutekunst
Dissertations
The Problem. This study was designed to discover how children from Seventh-day Adventist families react to their baptism after the event. Do they feel that they were "ready" at the time of baptism? Do they think they understood the Bible doctrines when they were baptized? Which people and factors influenced them in their decision? Have these children reached cognitive maturity according to the Formal Operations stage in Piagetian terms, the stage at which children are accountable for their decisions.
Method. A questionnaire of thirty-three questions was given to children in selected Adventist schools who had been baptized between June 1972 …
The Meaning Of Telos In Romans 10:4, Robert Badenas
The Meaning Of Telos In Romans 10:4, Robert Badenas
Dissertations
This study attempts to resolve the ambiguity surrounding the meaning of ‘telos’ in Rom 10:4 and to provide philological criteria for the understanding of this term.
Chapter I indicates clearly that a considerable shift has occurred in the history of the interpretation of ‘telos’ in Rom 10:4. The early church and the Reformers understood this verse in a teleological/completive sense: as a statement of the fulfillment of the law in Christ in a prophetic as well as purposive signification. However, since the post-Reformation era and particularly since the nineteenth century the terminal/temporal/antinomian interpretations have prevailed. Rom 10:4 has been generally …
