In the spring of 1888, the Trustees of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine gave a young Newark architect a splendid opportunity. Along with thirteen other architects, William Halsey Wood was invited to participate in the largest and most important architectural competition in America, If he won, Wood would have a "chance to immortalize himself" in his design for a Protestant Episcopal Cathedral in New York City. The competition, however, was stiff. As many as one hundred architects may have submitted plans and their work evinces the eclecticism of late nineteenth century American architecture. In 1983, an archaeological excavation was conducted at Tel Qishyon under the direction of C. Arnon. No archival file pertaining to the excavation has been located. The majority of the finds are attributed to the Early Bronze Age I, while a single item has been assigned to the Iron Age.

Paul R. Hyams was educated at Oxford University and is now a fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford. He is interested in the development of English law in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and is the author of King, Lords and Peasants in Medieval England: The Common Law of Vtfleinage in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1980).

David Mann was born in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1950. He earned his B.F.A. at Kent State University and his M.F.A. at the State University of New York at Buffalo. His work has been exhibited locally and nationally. Currently he is an Assistant Professor in the College of Visual and Performing Arts of Syracuse University, where he teaches drawing and painting.

Jonathan Bennett was born in New Zealand in 1930. His career as a teacher of philosophy has been spent mainly at the University of Cambridge (1956-68), the University of British Columbia (1970-79), and, since 1979, Syracuse University. He has written three books on early modern philosophy and two on the philosophy of mind and language. His Spinoza's Ethics will appear in December 1983.

Books

The social system of Weimar Germany has always been controversial. From the start 1Weimar society was characterized by a peculiar fluidity: between 1913 and 1933, the German Reich, commonly referred to as the Weimar Republic, was a virtual laboratory of sociocultural experimentation. In the streets of German towns and cities, political armies competed for followers--a process punctuated by assassinations and advertised by street battles embroiling monarchists, imperial militarists, nihilistic war veterans, Communists, Socialists, anarchists, and National Socialists. Parliamentary activity involved about twenty-five political parties whose shifting alliances produced twenty governmental cabinets with an average lifespan of less than nine months.

Scholarly Articles

This article examines some legal and moral issues associated with two developing areas of biomedicine; cloning and cryonics. The author firstly considers the practical benefits to society of developing perfecting and utilizing the process of cloning. These include the ability to overcome inheritable genetic defects and the provision of organs for transplantation. Against this must be weighed some moral and ethical problems of genetic engineering. Professor Smith then discusses the process of deep-freezing a person and the development of cryonics as a social movement. The major legal problem stemming from cryonics is determining the time at which a cryonically suspended …
