Bibliophiles and Indiana history buffs alike are apt to have heard of John James Dufour. The story of the man who established vineyards at Vevay, for years the site of an annual wine festival, and who wrote the classic and rare The American Vine-dresser's Guide (Cincinnati: S. J. Browne, 1826) is an interesting one and one that deserves more attention. This thesis attempts to provide a sociological understanding of the drug use problem in the United States. The research attempts to tie the social problem of drug abuse to traditional social movement models. Herbert Blumer (1971:298) in his article, "Social Problems as Collective Behavior," stated the following: Sociologists have erred in locating social problems in objective conditions. Instead, social problems have their being in a process of collective definition. This process determines whether social problems will arise, whether they become legitimated, how they are shaped in discussion, how they come to be addressed in official policy, and how they are …

This thesis is based on conceptual research or what Campbell, et al, calls critical analysis. This type of research involves "critically evaluating theories advanced by other writers” (1982: 32). The information used in this research was gathered from the written work of a variety of thinkers who can be grouped into four categories. Brain science researchers are the people working experimentally on the questions of lateralized brain function. This group includes neurosurgeons and psychologists. Their writings consist of experimental processes and results as well as conclusions and speculations about brain function.

The first chapter of the project consists of an examination of the existing schools of literary criticism. For ease in analysis, the various schools are analyzed according to the amount of outside research engaged in by the critic, that is, research which deals with elements extrinsic to the actual text itself. At one extreme is new criticism, which argues that one need not indulge in any outside research, but simply should focus on the literature itself. In an effort to design learning materials which de-emphasize the decoding process, and concentrate instead upon cognitive and critical thinking processes, picture study has been chosen as a potentially effective vehicle for providing delivery of programs for remediation of reading problems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of training in visual cognitive skills as an alternative remedial technique for increasing the reading comprehension of children whose reading skills are considered to be lower than expected due to a learning disability. Ambrose Bierce exhibited a number of elements of existential thinking both in his life and in his writing. But he was ambivalent about his philosophical stance, and it is difficult to know whether he was the utter pessimist he has been called, or whether his attitude toward the universe admitted a certain optimism.

Much of Bierce's thought parallels modern existentialism, which has three main tenets: a belief that there is no God and the universe is, therefore, irrational; a descent into despair; and a choice of life or death.

The problem of this study was to increase the general publics' awareness of the difficulties Black Americans faced in pursuit of higher education.

The procedure was a twofold process. First, the writer reviewed some of the pre-college variables that affected the Black student. Second, the needs and concerns of the Black student at a predominantly White University were studied by the use of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to three groups on the Eastern Illinois University Campus. James Joyce's Ulysses, the most influential novel of the twentieth century, has often been criticized for its fragmentation and complexity. Impenetrable to some readers, misunderstood by others, Ulysses bears within its eighteen episodes a symmetry of subject and form that at once clarifies and multiplies the meanings to be found there. Richard Ellmann calls Joyce's theory of art "the perception of coincidence," a theory best exemplified by "Wandering Rocks," the central episode of Ulysses. The use of "symmetrical coincidence" in ''Wandering Rocks" can be seen in two ways: 1)the internal structure of the episode, and 2)its location among …
