A study of Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony cannot be begun without introduction. Too many extra musical experiences in Mahler's life need to be explored before a study of the music is undertaken. His life, especially the two years before his death, was like a whirlwind of problematic experiences. It is impossible to say exactly which of these experiences affected the Ninth but it is certain that many of them did. Samuel Johnson, that eighteenth-century English authority on human learning and life, had a surprisingly low regard for painting. But he knew the first great British artist, William Hogarth, and publicly applauded the first art exhibitions in England. Johnson would have found an equally good reason to applaud Bridgewater State College’s Hogarth Festival in October of 1982. This exhibition of twenty-five, beautifully preserved prints was a splendid sampling of Hogarth’s artistic legacy selected from the collection owned by the Judd Family of New Jersey and on loan from Monmouth College, New Jersey through Professor Vincent DiMattio. Will Kennedy, the bright flash on Montana's Populist scene in the early 1890s, never dodged a political conflict, never avoided a public controversy, and never withheld his views. He was the persistent, often strident, and sometimes radical voice among those Montanans who accepted the label Populist. Some of his opponents called him a crank and many dismissed him as an eccentric, but it was difficult for them to ignore his accomplishments. Kennedy, almost singlehandedly, had crafted legislation that introduced the Australian ballot to Montana, coerced the territorial legislature to accept it, and followed that law with an effective electoral registration …

There are many popular misconceptions about people on welfare. This study challenges these myths with empirical findings, confirming the results of earlier studies. Four misconceptions contradicted by the findings of this study are as follows:

1. MYTH: She Doesn’t Want to Work

El Horcon: United States Territory South Of The Rio Grande, Stephen Jay Phelps

In 1906, the American Rio Grande Land and Irrigation Company diverted the Rio Grande, creating a U.S. enclave called El Horcon in Mexican territory. For 71 years, this tract of land was tilled by local farmers, only gaining attention towards the end of its existence. Despite causing minimal issues, potential conflicts persisted until its cession to Mexico in 1977. Initially, U.S. government action in 1911 rectified immediate damage to ranchers affected by the diversion. However, ambiguity in sovereignty led to legal disputes and unauthorized cross-border activities. El Horcon's unique status allowed farmers to violate both U.S. and Mexican laws, highlighting …
