Time in its inward form may be able to provide a significance which sustains the human spirit. If this is true, it becomes unnecessary to seek an enduring significance for life in the transcendent.

Western man's attitudes toward time are a composite of religious, historical, and cultural assumptions. The Christian model of time supported man by its emphasis on God's interventions in the world. The scientific model of time left man adrift in an objective world. The ascendancy of the scientific model brought a devaluation of both time and human life.

This thesis in creative writing consists of both fiction and nonfiction. The fiction section includes three original short stories; the nonfiction, six original mood pieces.

My intention in writing the short stories is to portray the foibles of human nature while preserving the nobility of human character. I believe that all individuals possess the possibilities for good and evil and that their interactions with other individuals and their environments determine the realization of these possibilities in varying degrees.

The mood pieces are drawn from journal entries inspired by observations of life in Tidewater Virginia. The writings, both objective and introspective, …

The estuarine Nansemond River in southeastern Virginia provided exploitable resources to Indians and English colonists during the seventeenth century. Colonization of the Nansemond, attempted in 1609, was resisted by the Nansemond Indians and was accomplished only after they were decimated and displaced. Anglicans and dissenting Puritans and Quakers established churches and meeting houses along the river. Richard Bennett, a Puritan and later a Quaker, brought the first Negro into the Nansemond River area and served as Governor of Virginia. Settlers established farms, conformed to a socio-political system, questioned royal authority during Bacon's Rebellion, and were afforded the protection of a …

General Aleksei Nikolaevich Kuropatkin's leadership of the Russian Army in Manchuria in 1904-5 is examined. Fran the rear guard battles at the Yalu and Te-li-ssu through the engagement at Tieh-ling Kuropatkin's direction of the war reflected his belief that the Russian armies were of inferior strength. Whenever a serious threat appeared he retreated to the north to gain tine so that more reinforcement would be available to swell the size of his army. He believed that eventually this strategy would provide the preponderant force and eventual victory. But that proclivity to retreat, to be oriented to the defense rather than …

This thesis asks the question: what rhetorical factors were applied to the reorientation of American public opinion toward the Soviet Union immediately after June 22, 1941. A brief review of American diplomatic trends leading to June 22, 1941 is provided. The term rhetoric is operationally defined and the limits establishing causation between persuasion and opinion are delineated. The national communication process is explained and a national opinion profile, as it existed in the spring of 1941, is described. The international controversy arising from the use of black colonial troops by the French occupation forces in the German Rhineland after World War I is examined in this paper. Particular emphasis is given to American press accounts of the events on the Rhine (1919- 1922) including those of the New York Times, the Nation, the Literary Digest, and the New Republic. Two questions are addressed: Were the events on the Rhine, particularly the alleged atrocities committed by French black colonials, accurately reported? Secondly, was the reporting of the controversy affected by racial violence in the United States?

Malcolm Cowley's first edition of 'Exile's Return: A Narrative of Ideas' (1934) was an autobiographical narrative which traced Cowley and his friends on their ideological odyssey from bohemianism to Marxism. Cowley's 'Exile's Return: A Literary Odyssey of the 1920s' (1951) was written because Cowley, like other writers of his generation, was embarrassed by his decade of Marxist enthusiasm and, coupled with a national mood increasingly hostile to Communism, he now perceived his view of history in the first book as a literary flaw. However, once that view was judged inaccurate, it was easy for Cowley to convince himself that "self" …
