Alimbics, Shirley G. Wade May 1964

Alimbics, Shirley G. Wade

English Language and Literature ETDs

In his book, On Poetry and Poets (New York: Farrar, Straus, and Cudahy, 1957), T. S. Eliot says that the poet writing on poetry "has peculiar qualifications and peculiar limitations" because he is "always trying to defend the kind of poetry he is writing, or to formulate the kind of poetry he wants to write" (p. 93). In my own case, any such qualifications and limitations derive from the beliefs I hold about lyric poetry. For many years, I have believed that poetry, whatever else it is, is predominantly lyrical. Almost certainly, I hold this belief because I can still …

Mary Baker G. Eddy : A Preparation, A Discovery And A Culmination, G. Elaine Johnson May 1964

Mary Baker G. Eddy : A Preparation, A Discovery And A Culmination, G. Elaine Johnson

Honors Theses

In a study of any religion, particularly Christian Science, it is difficult to find unbiased and historical source material. Therefore the student must accept prejudiced views and make his own judgment on value and authenticity. In such a manner the research and execution of this paper have been completed. Although personal opinions have been included, they have been based on the material presented by both advocates of and antagonists to Mrs. Eddy.

To determine the scope of this paper, it was necessary to find the culmination of her discovery before the actual organization of her church began to form. Although …

Spanish Indian Policy In New Mexico, 1778-1793, Ronald J. Benes May 1964

Spanish Indian Policy In New Mexico, 1778-1793, Ronald J. Benes

History ETDs

This thesis deals with Spanish Indian policy and its implementation in New Mexico during the governorships of Juan Bautista de Anza (1778-1787) and Fernando de la Concha (1787-1794). The Indian tribes involved are those which lived on the frontiers of New Mexico--the Comanches, Utes, Navahos, and Apaches. The establishment of the Commandancy General of the Internal Provinces in 1776 marked a new administrative set up to defend the Internal Provinces against Indian attacks, and the periods of Anza and Concha saw the full development of defensive measures in New Mexico. The Spandiards' immediate objective was pacification of the interior provinces; …

Virginia And The West Indies Trade, 1740-1765, Charles W. Sargent May 1964

Virginia And The West Indies Trade, 1740-1765, Charles W. Sargent

History ETDs

Although the historian of Virginia's proud heritage has been diligent in the pursuit of various phases of Virginia's political and economic life, the Old Dominion's involvement with the West Indies trade has been all but neglected. The various facets of this trade and its profound effect on Virginia's colonial well-being deserves to be written. Herein is an opportunity to reveal that Virginia's participation in the Revolutionary War had several roots: not the least was the threat to its domestic trade. It goes without saying that this work is not intended to be definitive on the subject as there is yet …

A Selective Study Of The Music Education Curriculum Of The North Central School Systems Of Arkansas In Grades Seven Through Twelve, Roosevelt Martin Jr.

Music ETDs

The Poetry Of Jorge Luis Borges, 1923-1963., Cleon Wade Capsas May 1964

The Poetry Of Jorge Luis Borges, 1923-1963., Cleon Wade Capsas

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Nineteen hundred and sixty one was a year of signal importance in the career of Jorge Luis Borges. On May 1, 1961 he was awarded, jointly with Samuel Beckett, the Prix International des Editeurs. Later that same year he published Antología personal, a forty-nine piece selection of his own work dictated by personal preference, which by the fact of selection is important for an appreciation of his work. Finally in the autumn of 1961 he traveled abroad (if we except a few short trips to Uruguay) for the first time in 38 years. He was a Visiting Professor at the …

An Investigation Of The Theology Of C.W. Butler, Donald Hohensee May 1964

An Investigation Of The Theology Of C.W. Butler, Donald Hohensee

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Reformation brought to light truths which had been hidden and forgotten for many years. The truth which Luther helped to bring to remembrance was that of justification by faith. This truth was the 1 source and determinate of his theology. About two hundred years later another man of God helped to bring out a forgotten truth, that of entire sanctification by faith. This man was John Wesley. This truth is regarded by many as being the source and determinate of his theology. 2 The Methodist Church, which sprang from the movement started by Wesley, spread to America, producing many …

The Ending Of Mark Reconsidered, Louis Brighton May 1964

The Ending Of Mark Reconsidered, Louis Brighton

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Did Mark end his Gospel at verse 20 of chapter 16, at verse 8, or with an ending which included in some detail the appearances of the risen Christ and the Ascension, or with a short rounded-off phrase after verse 8? The advanced knowledge of new New Testament materials at this point do not make the outcome of our research necessarily more assured. Nevertheless we are finding more alternatives from which to choose. It is, however, the intention of this study to show that there is a good chance with all the materials involved to arrive at a fairly assured …

Some Of The Hermeneutical Presuppositions And Part Of The Exegetical Methodology Of Georg Stoeckhardt, William Goerss

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The purpose of this paper has been to penetrate into Stoeckhardt's major exegetical works and significant sermons in order to determine what some of his hermeneutical presuppositions were and how they affected his exegetical methodology.

Πειραξμοξ In The New Testament Of The Gospels, Richard Jeske May 1964

Πειραξμοξ In The New Testament Of The Gospels, Richard Jeske

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

What, therefore, is the meaning of Πειραξμóσ? What is the force and power behind it? Has the New Testament taken over older ideas connected with Πειραξμóσ or has it contributed new meaning to the word? How does the substantive relate to its verb form Πειραξω? These and other questions will be answered in the following thesis.

A Grammatical Study Of The Passive Voice In The Synoptic Gospels, David Moke May 1964

A Grammatical Study Of The Passive Voice In The Synoptic Gospels, David Moke

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this investigation is to examine the use of the passive voice in the Synoptic Gospels. Every verb in the Synoptic Gospels that occurs in the passive voice is examined without exception to determine if it is used to cover or veil the divine name of God or God's divine activity. This idea was suggested by the Index of Subjects of the Blasa-Debrunner-Funk Grammar. Under the subject of the Passive (voice) is listed the use of the passive "to avoid the divine name. 112 It was also noted that Joachim Jeremias in two of his works quite often …

The Missouri Synod And The Chicago (Intersynodical) Theses, Charles Bunzel May 1964

The Missouri Synod And The Chicago (Intersynodical) Theses, Charles Bunzel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The main interest of this paper will be centered on the Missouri Synod. Thus there will be a close look at the Synod's Proceedings for the period involved, especially the committee reports dealing with the negotiations and the theses. Another basic source will be the periodicals of the time. The Lutheran Witness will be the basic Missouri Synod periodical source and the Lutheran Standard will be the main source for Missouri's opponents. Also the theological journal of Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis, which appeared under various names (Lehre und Webre, Theological Monthly, and Concordia Theological Monthly) will be extensively used. …

The Theology Of The Book Of Proverbs, William Macdonald May 1964

The Theology Of The Book Of Proverbs, William Macdonald

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Specifically, then, the purpose of this study is to discover and clarify the contribution of the שָׁלִיממְ to Old Testament theology. How does the theology herein reflected relate in general to the Law and Prophets? What are the distinctive emphases of the Book? What significance is to be derived from the palpable omissions? Does the theology inherent in the Book merely reflect that of the remainder of the Old Testament or does it contribute something new into the stream of truth?

The Concept Of Pleroma In Its Contribution To Pauline Christology, Harold Merklinger May 1964

The Concept Of Pleroma In Its Contribution To Pauline Christology, Harold Merklinger

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the meaning of the word πλήεωμα as it is used by St. Paul and from its theological content to ascertain Paul's contribution to Christology in his employment of the concept. Theologically Paul's concept of Pleroma is among his basic concepts. This is particularly true in his epistles to the Ephesians and to the Colossians. In the latter Paul uses Pleroma to give his readers a glimpse into the deep relationship which exists between the Father and the Son, while in the former epistle he moves Pleroma over into the realm of Ecclesiology …

The Celestial Element In The Sacrament Of The Altar In Contemporary Lutheran Theology (1945-1963), Donald Veitengruber May 1964

The Celestial Element In The Sacrament Of The Altar In Contemporary Lutheran Theology (1945-1963), Donald Veitengruber

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper does not propose to defend the use of the term "celestial element." The debate which has grown up around the Arnoldshain Theses shows us that we ought not stake the Lutheran or New Testament theology of the Sacrament of the Altar on the use of this term. And yet, it is a good term, for it takes us immediately to the heart of that which separates the Lutheran from the Reformed tradition. Do we only receive bread and wine in the Sacrament, or do we receive something more? This "something" is the "celestial element."

The Metaphysics Of Paul Weiss, Philip G. Heim May 1964

The Metaphysics Of Paul Weiss, Philip G. Heim

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is an exposition of the metaphysical position set down by Paul Weiss in his Modes of Being. It is written in answer to the question, "How is it that there are four irreducible modes of being as held by Paul Weiss?" While the bulk of material with which this thesis deals derives directly from Modes of Being, several of Weiss' central arguments in support of his position were taken from an earlier work, Reality, written in 1939. The fundamental metaphysical positions of both works are compatible with one another.

An Analysis Of Relationships Between Religious Broadcast Programming Objectives And Methods Of Presentation Used By Selected Major Religious Program Producers, As Compared With The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Val E. Limburg May 1964

An Analysis Of Relationships Between Religious Broadcast Programming Objectives And Methods Of Presentation Used By Selected Major Religious Program Producers, As Compared With The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Val E. Limburg

Theses and Dissertations

In a society greatly influenced by the electronic media, research indicates there is a need to effectively communicate religious programming to broadcast audiences. The establishment of guides lines between the programs' audiences, the producers' objectives, and the methods of presentation used to accomplish the objectives could better insure program effectiveness.

Matthew's Concept Of The Son Of God In The Context Of Jesus' Baptism And First Temptation, Paul Bretscher May 1964

Matthew's Concept Of The Son Of God In The Context Of Jesus' Baptism And First Temptation, Paul Bretscher

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Like Cullmann, Fuller sees a close conceptual relationship between the language of sonship and that of the Servant in Deutero- Isniah.

It is to this kind of inquiry that the present study hopes to make a contribution. We shall not attempt, as others have done, to construct a total Christology, or even to trace our single term through the whole of the New Testament. We shall concentrate on one Book, the Gospel of Matthew, and within that book on one moment, the baptism of Jesus and His first (wilderness) temptation. Resources which contribute to this limited area of study we …

Roman Catholic, Lutheran, And Calvinistic Conceptions Of The Kingdom Of God As They Relate To The Role Of The Church In The World, Hans Bruss May 1964

Roman Catholic, Lutheran, And Calvinistic Conceptions Of The Kingdom Of God As They Relate To The Role Of The Church In The World, Hans Bruss

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This is a comparative study of Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and Calvinistic conceptions of the Kingdom of God as they relate to the role of the Church in the world.

The concept of the Kingdom is common to all periods of our Lord's teaching, but the concept of the Church appears only at two special points of His ministry: Matt. 16:18 and Matt. 18:17. New Testament scholars have explored this relationship of Kingdom and Church and have given various interpretations. In our opinion the Church of Jesus Christ is the product of the Kingdom of Christ, of His gracious rule. The …

Graduate Recital, Scott Gordon Jessop May 1964

Graduate Recital, Scott Gordon Jessop

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The writer's presentation of the recital was concerned with improving and demonstrating playing technique on the french horn also introducing some original ensemble compositions to both performers and listeners which might be used by music students. It is the belief of the writer that many qualities of good musicianship can be developed more rapidly through solo and small ensemble performance than through larger organizations because literature can be selected which is more suitable for the capabilities and developmental needs of the individual performer. It is hoped that these ensembles will be useful and worthwhile contributions to the demand for ensemble …

Graduate Recital, Arlan Randall Baird May 1964

Graduate Recital, Arlan Randall Baird

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

When the author commenced his Y~ster ' s program in the summer of 1959, it was decided that a lecture-recital project would be more desirable in his case than the alternative procedure of doing original research and writing a thesis . The writer has never regretted the decision, but it must be confessed he felt more than once that a thesis would have been the easier project. (Naturally, those who have written theses do not usually agree with this statement.) In fulfillment of all expectations, and despite the difficulties encountered, or rather because of them, the performance of the recital …

History Of The Japanese-American Relocation Center At Hunt, Minidoka County, Idaho, Donald E. Hausler May 1964

History Of The Japanese-American Relocation Center At Hunt, Minidoka County, Idaho, Donald E. Hausler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the event which hurled the United States into the throes of the Second World War, convinced many military strategists that precautions should be taken to guard the West Canst against possible invasion. The erection of a formidable defense system along the coast was complicated by the fact that 110,000 Japanese lived in Washington, Oregon, and California, a situation that could be hardly ignored by a suspicious public who rapidly formed the opinion that most Japanese-Americans harbored disloyal attitudes and would prove to be a menace to the war effort unless measures were immediately taken …

Early New Mexico Fur Trade, 1821-28, David Weber Apr 1964

Early New Mexico Fur Trade, 1821-28, David Weber

History ETDs

Today, the occasional appearance in New Mexican place names of the term nutria, a New Mexicanism meaning “beaver” serves as one of few reminders of the days when the mountain man trapped for pelts in the rivers and streams of the area that now comprises the State of New Mexico. And yet, as in other regions of the West, the fur trade flourished in New Mexico during the second and third decades of the nineteenth century. The village of Taos took its place with Fort Vancouver and St. Louis as a center for trappers.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the pastor's relationship to the Sunday school in the Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church which involved the following factors: 1. The Free Methodist Church as an entire body of Christians. 2. The Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church functioning as one of several other conferences in a denomination. 3. Each local congregation as a church in a given area which is one of several churches in the Oregon Conference. 4. The pastor as supervisor of the church in all areas and departments. 5. The Sunday school as a department …

A Study Of Motivation And Its Relationship To Churches, Fred H. Newkirk Apr 1964

A Study Of Motivation And Its Relationship To Churches, Fred H. Newkirk

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

As a pastor of a relatively small church, the writer has been intrigued with the question of why some churches grow, and in the same community, many churches struggle along at the same level of attendance for years. As one looks at the business community, one is confronted with the same similar question. Why do some businesses succeed, when many fail, and yet each handle essentially the same products. The question involves several different aspects of the study of motivation; group dynamics, leadership, the program, spiritual commitment, and individuals themselves. The main subject behind this investigation is the man on …

The Significance Of The Principles Of Christian Education In The Ministry Of John Wesley, John William Cox Apr 1964

The Significance Of The Principles Of Christian Education In The Ministry Of John Wesley, John William Cox

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Evangelical churches are evidencing a new emphasis upon Christian education. There appear to be differences of opinion within the denomination of which the writer is a minister, as to the adoption and practice of Christian education. In fact, there seems to be a general lack of knowledge of what Christian education is, especially on the local church level.

Since this denomination holds firmly to the teaching of John Wesley regarding the doctrine of experience, the writer was prompted to investigate whether John Wesley used the principles of Christian education in his ministry.

Age-Group Doctrinal Training And The Assemblies Of God, Roy Lyn Schmidt Apr 1964

Age-Group Doctrinal Training And The Assemblies Of God, Roy Lyn Schmidt

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

For years Protestantism has had many denominations, mainly because of variant doctrinal beliefs. Denominations who feel their existence is justified and who feel the truths for which they stand are worth perpetuating, have the solemn responsibility of indoctrinating their followers in the basic doctrines of the Bible as well as the distinctives for which they stand. When properly done, doctrinal trainings should assure a denomination of its continued existence, and the perpetuation of the truths for which it stands.

Accepted evangelical leaders indicated that doctrinal training was closely related to the destiny of a denomination, and most evangelical Protestant churches …
