Leisure Time In Eighteenth-Century Virginia, Andrew Jackson Johnson Jul 1964

Leisure Time In Eighteenth-Century Virginia, Andrew Jackson Johnson

Master's Theses

Eighteenth-century Virginia was strikingly agrarian. Tobacco planting on the plantations and farms created an ever-increasing need for new land. The growth of a dispersed rural society reacted against the formation of urban focal units and a middle class. This society did create, because of the endemic loneliness of the country, a people who desired companionship and proved to be gregarious and convivial.

The hospitality for which Virginians are well known was very much in evidence at this period and served in a subtle way to offer diversion to both guest and host. Travelers were invited to the plantations and farms …

Southern Expansion In The Caribbean Region, 1850-1860, Keith Ross Speiran

Masters Theses

The Background: 1846-1850

The term "Fillibuster" has a different connotation in modern times than that of a hundred years ago. Today according to The American College Dictionary, the term means, "a member of a minority in a legislative assembly who resorts to irregular or obstructive tactics to prevent the adoption of a measure generally favored, or to force a decision almost unanimously disliked." The dictionary also gives the older definition, which will be used in this paper. This meaning is "an irregular military adventurer; a freebooter or buccaneer."

The purpose of this thesis is to describe a number of …

Ailred Of Riveaulx The Consistency Of His Life And Writings With His Thought And His Profession As Cistercian Monk, Tyrrell Hughes Jul 1964

Ailred Of Riveaulx The Consistency Of His Life And Writings With His Thought And His Profession As Cistercian Monk, Tyrrell Hughes

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

The author confesses to a profound emotional involvement with AiIred of Rievaulx, Saint of the Church and man whose love was charity, the love that is like God's love. But this zealousness on his behalf was born after analysis of and reflection on Ailred's life and writings, comparing these judgments with the treatments he has received at the hands of various scholars, among them the fine names of David Knowles, F.M. Powicke, C. H. Talbot and Aelred Squire. The initial reaction induced by the comparison was indignation at the injustice done AiIred, but much more at the seeming …

Polish Settlement At Yalta: An Act Of Betrayal Or An Act Of Realism?, Harold R. Mogg Jul 1964

Polish Settlement At Yalta: An Act Of Betrayal Or An Act Of Realism?, Harold R. Mogg

Graduate Student Research Papers

With all of this apparent concern by the Big Three regarding Poland, why has there been so much criticism of the Polish settlement at Yalta? Did Roosevelt and Churchill actually appease Stalin in regard to the Polish settlement? What was this settlement at Yalta--an act of betrayal or an act of realism? This is the confusing question that the writer of this paper will attempt to answer.

A Thematic Analysis Of The Contemporary Ecuadorian Novel, Wayne L. Allison Jun 1964

A Thematic Analysis Of The Contemporary Ecuadorian Novel, Wayne L. Allison

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The modern Ecuadorian novel contains many autochthonous features common to several of the less advanced nations of Latin America. The fact that it is heavily sociological in nature will come as no surprise to any serious student of Latin American literature. Economic dissatisfaction, social reform, leftist political propaganda, and inordinate sexual desires are not themes used exclusively by the Ecuadorians. Like many other Latin American writers, the Ecuadorian novelists find inspiration in European political and social philosophies. Almost with exception they portray the seamy side of their society and, like Zola, concentrate their attention on the wretchedness of the masses, …

Early Shipbuilding In Colonial New Spain, 1519-1565, William Collins Jun 1964

Early Shipbuilding In Colonial New Spain, 1519-1565, William Collins

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis presents a general study of early shipbuilding in New Spain, with special emphasis on the period, 1519 to 1565. It is intended to be preliminary to a dissertation on a phase of the same general subject. This paper is presented for the historian, and is not intended to be a technical study of shipbuilding. The story of shipbuilding in New Spain is closely related to the story of exploration of the New World and the conquest of New Spain. I have tried to cover the narrative of exploration and conquest only insofar as it relates to shipbuilding and …

The Latin American Policy Of The Truman Administration, 1945-1952., Bernice Kaplan Jun 1964

The Latin American Policy Of The Truman Administration, 1945-1952., Bernice Kaplan

Latin American Studies ETDs

When Franklin D. Roosevelt first assumed office as President of the United States, he inherited a new Latin American policy from his predecessor, Herbert Hoover. Hoover had made sincere overtures to the Latin Americans in order to dispel their fears and dislike for the United States. By officially repudiating the Roosevelt Corollary, encouraging a peaceful settlement of the Tacna-Arica dispute, ending the Marine occupation in Nicaragua, instigating the withdrawal of United States forces in Haiti, and theoretically abandoning “nonrecognition” as an implement of political pressure. Hoover successfully laid the ground work for the Good neighbor policy which Roosevelt vigorously pursued.

Eschatology Of The Epistle To The Hebrews, Paul Andrews Jun 1964

Eschatology Of The Epistle To The Hebrews, Paul Andrews

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The approach adopted for this study was to select certain temporal references in the epistle and to examine them in the light of the events or periods of time to which they refer. The purpose of the approach was to gain an understanding, in so far as it i3 possible, of the concept of time which underlies the writing of Hebrews. Though some of the references seem casual or unclear, a rather distinct picture of the author’s chronological framework emerges when the texts are examined more closely and related to one another.

An Analysis And Development Of The Baptismal Rite Of The Lutheran Agenda, Hans Carl Boehringer Jun 1964

An Analysis And Development Of The Baptismal Rite Of The Lutheran Agenda, Hans Carl Boehringer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is intended to be a practical study of two closely related problems involved in the use of the baptismal rite of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America as it is found in The Lutheran Agenda, the conference's official guide to rites other than those most directly associated with the celebration of the Eucharist or with the observance of Matins and Vespers. The first quest i on to be studied is, “What does the rite itself mean?" The second question is, “How best may baptism be administered in an edifying manner in the congregations of The Lutheran …

Christ As Creator: A Theology From Paul For Racial Integration In The Church Based Especially On Colossians 1:15-20, Herbert Schulze Jun 1964

Christ As Creator: A Theology From Paul For Racial Integration In The Church Based Especially On Colossians 1:15-20, Herbert Schulze

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this thesis is to relate a New Testament theology to the explosive issue of race relations in the world today. If the Church of Christ is to be the light and leaven of the world, then it is safe to say that she should bear much responsibility for alleviating the current racial unrest. The writer will operate primarily in the field of exegetical theology, with complementary references to the fields of dogmatic and practical theology.

The Relationship Of ‘Ο Νομοε To The Life Of The Christian According To St. Paul's Letter To The Romans, Burton Everist Jun 1964

The Relationship Of ‘Ο Νομοε To The Life Of The Christian According To St. Paul's Letter To The Romans, Burton Everist

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

What relationship the law has for the Christian is no new problem for the Church. Moses, Christ, and Paul dealt with the issue, yet this enigma confronted theologians of the past and continues to confront theologians today. Among contemporary Lutheran theologians the question has revolved around the propriety of using the law as a guide for the Christian's life: the so-called "third use of the law." This concern underlies the present thesis. In Paul, who grappled with God's law, is the chief answer to the dilemma. Paul's letter to the Christians in Rome has provided a most systematic discussion of …

Andrew Jackson: Blackbird Of L’Arbre Croche, Grace Walz Jun 1964

Andrew Jackson: Blackbird Of L’Arbre Croche, Grace Walz

Masters Theses

Prologue

I work very slowly on my lecture. My strength is failing and my eyes are so that I cannot use them by candlelight. I have many pages written with pencil and when I can get them copied in ink, I will send them to you.

My object in trying to have this printed is that it might live after I am dead and finally be adopted as the plan or means to bring about the true development of American Indians.

My days are numbered, as I am entirely unable to do any manual labor, not only from old age …

The Russian Revolution Of 1905 As Depicted By Contemporary American Reports, With Special Emphasis On The "Bloody Sunday" Incident Of January 22, 1905, Patrick Kay Bidelman Jun 1964

The Russian Revolution Of 1905 As Depicted By Contemporary American Reports, With Special Emphasis On The "Bloody Sunday" Incident Of January 22, 1905, Patrick Kay Bidelman

Masters Theses

Preface

On Sunday morning, January 22, 1905, a crowd of workers marched through the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia. They were led by a Russian Orthodox priest, Father George Gapon, who had a petition to grievances to present to Czar Nicholas II. As they converged on the square in front of the Winter Palace, they were fired upon by the Imperial troops. The result was a complete military victory for the autocracy and a casualty rate among the petitioners that has caused the incident to go down in history as "Bloody Sunday."

On Monday, January 23, newspapers throughout the United …

And Yet I Have Loved Him: The Judgement Of William Of Saint Thierry On Peter Abelard, Rozanne Elder Jun 1964

And Yet I Have Loved Him: The Judgement Of William Of Saint Thierry On Peter Abelard, Rozanne Elder

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

On the second of June in the year 1140, a Council of the Church in Sens formally condemned as heretical nineteen propositions from the works of Peter Abelard, philosopher, theologian, and teacher of unparalleled popularity. Denying emphatically that his teaching varied in any way from that of the Church, Abelard appealed to Rome, only to have Innocent II uphold the decision of the Council. He upheld the condemnation of Abelard’s works, ordered his writings to be burned, forbade him ever again to teach, and, finally, ordered him to perpetual penance. The condemnation of Abelard can be laid to …

U. S. Gold Policy From April 1933 To De Facto Stabilization Of The Dollar Upon A Gold. Basis In January 1934, Robert A. Hageman Jun 1964

U. S. Gold Policy From April 1933 To De Facto Stabilization Of The Dollar Upon A Gold. Basis In January 1934, Robert A. Hageman

Masters Theses

Introduction

An inadequate banking system and an attachment to monetary panaceas are both characteristic of the American past. When the Revolutionary War began, the colonist were ill-prepared to meet the growing burden of financial stress in the newly formed Confederation. In order to bring some degree of organization to the unstable monetary system, the Continental Congress fixed the ratio between gold and silver at 15.3 to 1 and authorized the issuance of Continental notes redeemable in Spanish-milled dollars or their equivalent in gold or silver. But after 1780, "continentals" depreciated so rapidly they soon ceased to circulate, and coins replaced …

The Road To Destruction: Solitude And Decadence In CrôNica Da Casa Assassinada By Lúcio Cardoso, Sharon Wyatt Jun 1964

The Road To Destruction: Solitude And Decadence In CrôNica Da Casa Assassinada By Lúcio Cardoso, Sharon Wyatt

Art & Art History ETDs

Lúcio Cardoso's work may be considered as personifying the problem of human solitude in all its physical, moral, and spiritual aspects. Mankind is a wretched lot forever condemned to an oppressive solitude by a merciless God. He developed this theme first through the omniscient third person as in A Luz no Sub-solo and Dias Perdidos, then turned to the stream of consciousness technique as recorded in the mind as in O anfiteatro, or in a confession as in Inácio, and finally perfected it in his masterpiece, Crônica da Casa Assasainada. I have chosen to analyze this last book since it …

The Teamsters Union Under Hoffa, Donnalee Rowe May 1964

The Teamsters Union Under Hoffa, Donnalee Rowe

Honors Theses

The labor union has reached a crisis today. In the last two decades labor costs have risen to a point from which they can rise little higher. Yet the number and complexity of labor problems has increased with automation and the consequent unemployment. To find an answer, the union has turned to the philosophy of business unionism. In the long this will only serve to increase the restrictions places on unions and will ultimately destroy their sense of social responsibility. The rank and file member, a reflection of the society in which he lives, has the immediate responsibility to save …

A Study Of The Present And Potential Utilization Of The Boy Scout Program By Evangelical Churches, Alfred R. Crist May 1964

A Study Of The Present And Potential Utilization Of The Boy Scout Program By Evangelical Churches, Alfred R. Crist

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The evangelical Protestant movement in America is being identified as a struggle for identity and existence due to the advances made by neo-orthodoxy and liberalism into the basic beliefs of all Protestants. With this growth has come the ecumenical movement which is reaching all who profess the Christian faith. As long as these forces are gripping the mind and attention of most nominal American Protestants, the evangelical forces within this nation are being forced to re-examine their principles and programs in order to strengthen the emphasis on a vital, Bible-centered program of' evangelism and soul winning.

As evangelical Protestant denominations …

A Reappraisal Of The Expedition Of PáNfilo De NarváEz To Mexico In 1520, Ralph H. Vigil May 1964

A Reappraisal Of The Expedition Of PáNfilo De NarváEz To Mexico In 1520, Ralph H. Vigil

History ETDs

The expedition of Pánfilo de Narváez to Mexico in the spring of 1520 constitutes one of the most important episodes in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Confederacy. The coming of Narváez represented a serious challenge to the de facto authority of Hernán Cortés as leader of the conquest enterprise, and had an indirect, if not direct, relationship to the enforced-retreat (La Noche Triste) of the Spaniards from the Aztec capital several weeks later. Consequently the sequence of events subsequent to the arrival of Narváez and the motives which prompted them merit careful investigation and analysis.

Science And Education In Western Europe, 500 To 1100, Phillip D. Thomas May 1964

Science And Education In Western Europe, 500 To 1100, Phillip D. Thomas

History ETDs

Since the Italian Renaissance, scholars have been enamored of the past. The past being, for most of them, "the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome.” The Renaissance, the period of the great rebirth of classical literary knowledge, and later European history were studied; but the interregnum between the decay and all of the ancient world and the rebirth of classical knowledge was largely neglected. This period of almost ten centuries was looked upon as a time of regress instead of progress - an epoch of ignorance and superstitution.

Martin Guenther - Life And Work, James Albers May 1964

Martin Guenther - Life And Work, James Albers

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The immediate purpose of this study was to describe the life and work of Martin Guenther. The ultimate purpose, and that upon which the validity of the study rests, was to analyze the significance which Guenther's work had for the history of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. This last objective received further stimulus by the question raised in the writer's mind about the previous recognition, or better, lack of recognition, of Guenther's work, especially by those who were his contemporaries, Was Guenther so unimportant for the Missouri Synod, that his work was largely unrecognized?

The Architectonic Phrase In The Drama Of Henrik Ibsen, Genevieve Townsend May 1964

The Architectonic Phrase In The Drama Of Henrik Ibsen, Genevieve Townsend

English Language and Literature ETDs

It is the intent of this paper to demonstrate and prove Henrik Ibsen’s use of a constantly repeating key word or phrase as an essential structural device in his mature drama. This key word or phrase constitutes an architectonic device on which the whole play is constructed, around which it revolves, and to which it returns. The word or phrase which shall be shown to be the keystone of each of Ibsen’s mature dramas may be defined as being, first, an expression which is repeated over and over again; second, this expression is one which normally reappears at the climax …

The British Nation And India: 1906-1914, Frank C. Stuart May 1964

The British Nation And India: 1906-1914, Frank C. Stuart

History ETDs

Great Britain faced a political and moral crisis in India in the years 1906-1914. The inhabitants of Bengal, angered at the partition of their province by Lord Curzon in 1905, talked openly of revolution. More moderate native leaders accused the British of reneging on their promises, made in 1858, to include more Indians in the government of India. The failure of the Indian educational system and the growing mistrust between rulers and ruled in India were likewise held up to censure. Native respect for the Englishman's innate sense of justice and fair play, the mainstay of the British Raj, was …
