The Significance Of The Principles Of Christian Education In The Ministry Of John Wesley, John William Cox Apr 1964

The Significance Of The Principles Of Christian Education In The Ministry Of John Wesley, John William Cox

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Evangelical churches are evidencing a new emphasis upon Christian education. There appear to be differences of opinion within the denomination of which the writer is a minister, as to the adoption and practice of Christian education. In fact, there seems to be a general lack of knowledge of what Christian education is, especially on the local church level.

Since this denomination holds firmly to the teaching of John Wesley regarding the doctrine of experience, the writer was prompted to investigate whether John Wesley used the principles of Christian education in his ministry.

Age-Group Doctrinal Training And The Assemblies Of God, Roy Lyn Schmidt Apr 1964

Age-Group Doctrinal Training And The Assemblies Of God, Roy Lyn Schmidt

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

For years Protestantism has had many denominations, mainly because of variant doctrinal beliefs. Denominations who !eel their existence is justified and who feel the truths for which they stand are worth perpetuating, have the solemn responsibility of indoctrinating their followers in the basic doctrines of the Bible as well as the distinctives for which they stand. When properly done, doctrinal training should assure a denomination of its continued existence, and the perpetuation of the truths for which it stands. If not, the denomination will eventually amalgamate or disintegrate.

Accepted evangelical leaders indicated that doctrinal training was closely related to the …

The Theology Of Self-Surrender In The Writings Of E. Stanley Jones, Varghese M. Kattapuram Apr 1964

The Theology Of Self-Surrender In The Writings Of E. Stanley Jones, Varghese M. Kattapuram

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

While this thesis is written as a partial fulfillment of the requirements toward a B.D. degree at Western Evangelical Seminary, it seeks to grapple with one of the most crucial issues confronting Christian theology today, namely, what to make of the insights and discoveries of the newer disciplines of psychology, psycho-analysis, psychiatry, psychotherapy, etc. For a while psychology proceeded as though theology did not exist or as though it were a remnant of the superstitions of a previous age. However, in recent years psychological practitioners outside the church have shown somewhat greater interest in the religious life of their patients …

The purpose of this study was to analyze the pastor's relationship to the Sunday school in the Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church which involved the following factors:

1. The Free Methodist Church as an entire body of Christians.

2. The Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church functioning as one of several other conferences in a denomination.

3. Each local congregation as a church in a given area which is one of several churches in the Oregon Conference.

4. The pastor as supervisor of the church in all areas and departments.

5. The Sunday school as a department …

An Analysis Of The Principal Media Of Exchange Used In Colonial Virginia, John Robert Chappell Apr 1964

An Analysis Of The Principal Media Of Exchange Used In Colonial Virginia, John Robert Chappell

Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the principal media of exchange used in Virginia during the Colonial period, showing why these media were used and how adequately or inadequately they performed the function of money. This analysis will be limited primarily to the role played by "tobacco money," coin, and paper money in the local economy of Virginia. The role of credit as a medium of exchange will be touched on only briefly, although its importance is recognized.

Milton And The Doctrine Of The Synod Of Dort Arminianism In Christian Doctrine And Paradise Lost, Robert James Fagg Apr 1964

Milton And The Doctrine Of The Synod Of Dort Arminianism In Christian Doctrine And Paradise Lost, Robert James Fagg

Master's Theses

In order to understand the similarities or areas of agreement between Milton's theology and that of the Arminians one not only has to understand thoroughly the five Arminian articles but also must be familiar with the theologies which produced them. [I] will attempt to show why a few scholars and theologians refer to Milton's Christine Doctrine and Paradise Lost as being Arminian by simply comparing the two theologies and pointing out the areas of definite agreement between them.

The Ethics Of Paul Weiss, Virginia C. Hill Apr 1964

The Ethics Of Paul Weiss, Virginia C. Hill

Bachelors’ Theses

The ethics of Paul Weiss is both the focal point of his philosophy and the impetus for its present refinement. As Weiss puts it, "The object of philosophical inquiry is to become a philosopher in fact." But a philosophy must have permanence, Weiss insists. Therefore, it cannot grow only out of a practical situation. Rather, a philosophy must spring from a view of the essential nature of all that is. From this view the philosopher can determine man's place in the world, the work which man must do, and the ideal toward which he must strive. This, in Weiss's mind, …

Christianity Encounters Totalitarianism In Germany, Viola M. Gross Apr 1964

Christianity Encounters Totalitarianism In Germany, Viola M. Gross

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

The German Church of the twentieth century offers a unique opportunity for study. It has twice faced a totalitarian government and has needed to learn to exist and carry on its witness to the Word of God in the face of almost insurmountable obstacles. The purpose of this paper is to contrast and compare the answer of the Church and the Christian to the National Socialists and to the Communists in East Germany, and to determine if possible if Christianity has learned the way through its desperate struggle in this century to continue its task under a hostile …

The Baronial Holdings Of The Mortimers At Wigmore From The Conquest Until 1330, Catherine Deans-Barrett Mar 1964

The Baronial Holdings Of The Mortimers At Wigmore From The Conquest Until 1330, Catherine Deans-Barrett

History ETDs

This study of one great border family, the Mortimers, endeavors to show the essentially feudal atmosphere existing in England well into the fourteenth century, even while England was developing, pari passu, a more modern political organization. Although this feudal character may be portrayed and exemplified in many ways, the method chosen here is based on the beginning and subsequent fluctuations of the fortunes of one particular family, the Mortimers. Its origins on the continent cannot be easily traced, but it left an indelible impression on English history.

Since the family customarily chose to cast its lot with that of the …

Summer Welles' Mediation In Cuba, 1933, Margaret Naegle Feb 1964

Summer Welles' Mediation In Cuba, 1933, Margaret Naegle

Latin American Studies ETDs

This writer first became interested in the 1933 revolution in Cuba during lectures given in May, 1963 at the University of New Mexico. As part of these lectures an interesting theory was presented regarding the Communist "takeover" of Cuba. Briefly, this theory holds that behind every successful Communist revolution (Russia, China, Cuba, for examples) there has been an earlier attempt at social revolution which failed. In the case of Cuba, this would be the revolution of 1933, and especially the reformist provisional government of Dr. Ramón Grau San Martín.

The entire process of the 1933 Cuban revolution calls for an …

The Leveller Influence In The New Model Army From 1647 To 1649, G. Elaine Johnson Jan 1964

The Leveller Influence In The New Model Army From 1647 To 1649, G. Elaine Johnson

Honors Theses

Although the scope of this paper, from February of 1647 to January of 1649, would seem rather limited, the actual impact of Leveller principles and methods was felt during this short span of time. After the final Agreement of the People in early 1649, the movement seemed to center around personal attacks, reiteration of previous ideas, and defensive measures. The establishment of the Commonwealth, under the thumb of Oliver Cromwell, left behind all the Leveller plans of government, which had been discussed and approved by the Agitators and the Army Council.

Other aspects of the Leveller movement, such as their …

Andrew Johnson And The Failure Of Moderate Reconstruction, Fraces Jo-Ann Cartwright Jan 1964

Andrew Johnson And The Failure Of Moderate Reconstruction, Fraces Jo-Ann Cartwright

Theses & Honors Papers

This paper represents an attempt to determine why Andrew Johnson's moderate policy for the reconstruction of the South failed. Because the paper is a study of Andrew Johnson, the politician, it dwells primarily only upon the political climate of 1865--although the importance of the social and economic changes occurring during reconstruction is recognized, they are herein treated only incidentally. In essence, the paper demonstrates the defeat of a politician. It is, furthermore, the contention of the paper that moderate reconstruction failed because of the ineffectiveness of its administrator--Andrew Johnson--not because of cabalistic intrigues hatched by those whom F.B. Simkins scoffingly …

La Convivencia Intercultural : Un Estudio, David Manuel Martinez Jan 1964

La Convivencia Intercultural : Un Estudio, David Manuel Martinez

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Military Career Of Colonel William Ranson Johnson Pegram, C.S.A., Beverly Blair Mcdowell Jan 1964

The Military Career Of Colonel William Ranson Johnson Pegram, C.S.A., Beverly Blair Mcdowell

Master's Theses

My initial introduction to Colonel Pegram was facilitated by the reading of Lee's Lieutenants, that monumental work on the Army of Northern Virginia, by Doctor Douglas Southall Freeman. One obscure footnote on page 674, volume Ill attracted my attention and imagination. Doctor Freeman states in this subscript that "Willie" Pegram deserves a biography. This study is an attempt to partially meet that challenge; however, I use the word "partially", for a complete biography would of necessity include more materials on the subject's early life. The major emphasis here is on his military career in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The …

Transcendentalism In The Private Journals Of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Rachel Sherwood Jan 1964

Transcendentalism In The Private Journals Of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Rachel Sherwood

Master's Theses

This paper is designed to interpret Transcendentalism by showing its origins and influences and to give the reader a view into the private journals of Ralph Waldo Emerson. The first chapter is devoted to a study of Transcendentalism and the question of its taking root in the Boston area in the 1830's. The second chapter presents a study of Emerson as he debated the forces of his universe and formulated a philosophy to explain the vicissitudes of life. It is necessary to relate Emerson's views with the events of his life. The years covered in the second chapter are 1820-1835.

Hart Crane : An Explanation Of His Poems, Van C. Wall Jan 1964

Hart Crane : An Explanation Of His Poems, Van C. Wall

Master's Theses

Like so many writers of the twenties, Hart Crane was born in the Midwest--Garretsville, Ohio, to be exact, on July 21, 1899; and, again like his fellow artists, he matured in a society which he seemed to have already outgrown by virtue of his sensitive temperament. The amoral world of burgeoning American business was a place where no writers belonged. Main Street crowds disliked them as much as they disliked crowds. And, in finding his own path through that world, he, like many of them, permanently lost his direction.
