The Propugnaculum Ecclesiae Of Josse Clichtove As A Critique Of Luther's Formula Missae And As Compared To The Sacrosanctum Concilium Of Vatican Ii, Joel H. Kuznik

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the intent of this thesis to make available by summary and translation the thought of Clichtove's Propugnaculum ecclesiae: (1) as a response to Luther's Formula Missae et communionis; (2) as a prototype of sixteenth-century theology of worship; and (3) as a contrast to the 1963 Sacrosanctum Concilium, the "Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy" of Vatican II.

The Church In Your House- A Study Into The Form And Function Of The Primitive Church, Paul Biegner May 1969

The Church In Your House- A Study Into The Form And Function Of The Primitive Church, Paul Biegner

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

A search for new forms of church and new patterns of ministry and mission has occupied parts of the church in the western world for the past ten years or so. Both the concern for the doctrine of the church and for the cutting edge of mission dominate the search for new forms. That search has yielded varied patterns, many of which utilize face-to-face contact in smaller groups to meet the challenges of mass-man in a depersonalized society. Some of these new forms of church and church ministry and mission have claimed a relationship to “the church in your house”.

∑Γη Χpi∑Tω - Pauline Eschatology In Philippians 1:23, John G. Eiwen

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis will be limited to the consideration of the immediate state of the believer after his death as this is illuminated by St. Paul in Phil. 1:23. Other Pauline passages will be studied as they relate to the verse in question. There will be no attempt to determine the state of the unbeliever since Paul does not treat this question.

The Virginia Resolutions Of 1798 : A Study Of The Contemporary Debate, Alice J. Retzer May 1969

The Virginia Resolutions Of 1798 : A Study Of The Contemporary Debate, Alice J. Retzer

Honors Theses

The Virginia Resolutions of 1798 have been praised as a defense of the basic freedoms of person, speech, and press and equally denounced as an early precedent for the principles of states rights, nullification and interposition. Involved in the crisis which arose over the Alien and Sedition Laws were such outstanding Virginians and national figures as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Taylor, William Branch Giles, John Marshall, Patrick Henry, and Henry Lee. Without major emphasis upon the contributions or activities of these statesmen or the historical implications of the Resolutions, the purpose of this paper is to examine the contemporary …

Philosophy And Explication Of An Honors Organ Recital, Bruce B. Stevens May 1969

Philosophy And Explication Of An Honors Organ Recital, Bruce B. Stevens

Honors Theses

Franz Liszt is credited with the first application of the term "recital" to a performance of solo music: in 1840 he advertised a program of "recitals" of the piano of a number of pieces. Afterwards the word was appropriated for designation of the performance of a whole program, as opposed to the performance of an individual work. This is how it is used today --- the performance by one or two performers of a group of solo pieces

In forming and executing a recital the performer has the responsibility of planning intelligently as well as performing the music in the …

Diplomatic Disobedience In American History 1781-1807, Thomas Lynwood Powers May 1969

Diplomatic Disobedience In American History 1781-1807, Thomas Lynwood Powers

Honors Theses

The United States of America owes much to its disobedient diplomats. They secured for this country its independence and original boundaries and later gained the expansion of these boundaries.

This paper examines early examples of such disobedience. It deals with the acts themselves, the viewpoints of the givers and the violators of instructions, and the overall significance to the United States.

The Virginia Protestant Reaction To The Secession Crisis : October 1859-May 1861, Leonard Ira Sweet May 1969

The Virginia Protestant Reaction To The Secession Crisis : October 1859-May 1861, Leonard Ira Sweet

Honors Theses

If the Virginia denominations could have forecast President Lincoln's request that the Commonwealth supply 2,340 troops to enforce the suppression of her sister southern states, unanimity would have prevailed from 1859 onward, and this paper would be unnecessary except for a single statement: The religious elements in Virginia endorsed secession. Although many of the clergy professed gifts of prophecy, their vision was eternal rather than secular. A religious calling meant exemplary stewardship as God's vassal, and as such their interests and concerns transcended political affairs. The men of the cloth kept abreast of current events, but as God's vice-regents, felt …

Virginia's Response To Nullification 1832-33, Robert Lawrence Musick Jr. May 1969

Virginia's Response To Nullification 1832-33, Robert Lawrence Musick Jr.

Honors Theses

The year 1832 found the United States in the midst of acute internal turmoil. Plagued by numerous and various problems, the Union felt its bonds strained to the bursting point. A serious rupture between the states and the federal government seemed imminent.

Congress in 1828 had enacted a tariff, known in the South as the Tariff of Abominations, which boosted the duties on certain manufactured goods and raw materials from about 37 per cent to 45 per cent. An effort by the South was made in 1832 to reduce this onerous burden. However, the new tariff law fell far short …

A Study In Propaganda And The Eccles Case, Cleo G. Geddes

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Adolf Hitler's rise to power had its beginnings in the distressed years following the First World War. The defeat of Germany was a shattering experience for Adolf. In Mein Kampf, he revealed his agony. “I could stand it no longer . . . . Everything went black again before my eyes; I tottered and groped my way back to the ward, threw myself on my bunk, and dug my burning head into my blanket and pillow . . . . So it had all been in vain. In vain all the sacrifices and privations; ... in vain the hours in …

Graduate Recital, Steven W. Allen May 1969

Graduate Recital, Steven W. Allen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The writer, having performed all of Weber's concertos and Johannes Brahms' "Sonata in F Minor," found it necessary to adopt a change of style and concept in learning and performing the Mozart concerto. The light, flowing style of the young musical genius is a contrast indeed to the flamboyant flagrancy of Weber. Mozart's conception of the phrase, the musical line, the completeness of each melodic statement varies in large measure from that of Carl von Weber and Johannes Brahms.

Graduate Recital, Gerald Graham Peterson May 1969

Graduate Recital, Gerald Graham Peterson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

For several years the writer had considered the idea that being an accomplished performer would be challenging and stimulating. He had been in public school music instruction and unable to develop this idea to the point that he would like. After his decision to work on a Master 's Degree in music, the thought of performing a recital was greeted as a welcome experience.

Certain aspects had to be considered before actual practice on a recital could begin. When planning a program to present for the recital, two facts came to mind. The writer had played the clarinet for 16 …

The Teaching Of Performance Techniques For Cornet And Trumpet, Sterling J. Morris May 1969

The Teaching Of Performance Techniques For Cornet And Trumpet, Sterling J. Morris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study of the basic performance techniques used by cornet and trumpet specialists and the common problems encountered by cornet and trumpet players was made through reference to personal experience, personal interviews, and articles in journals, magazines, bulletins, and books.

Three areas of performance were studied: (1) tone production, (2) intonation, and (3) technical development.

It was found that there is usually more than one solution to a problem, and that each solution given must be individualized to meet each player's needs. Most of the problems players encounter can be prevented if one uses correct playing procedures while playing a …

Ogden's Notorious "Two-Bit Street," 1870-1954, Lyle J. Barnes May 1969

Ogden's Notorious "Two-Bit Street," 1870-1954, Lyle J. Barnes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A history which records the weaknesses and failures of society may serve as its conscience. The history of Twenty-fifth Street in Ogden, Utah is that kind of history. It reminds us that it is possible for evil influences to prey upon society to the extent that it weakens and becomes vulnerable to the influence.

First the people became passive. They began to feel that the influence was there and there was little they could do about it. They then began ignoring it as if by doing so it would cease to exist. But it didn't disappear. Instead it grew and …

Voices Of Dissent: The History Of The Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints In Utah, 1863-1900, Richard Lyle Shipley May 1969

Voices Of Dissent: The History Of The Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints In Utah, 1863-1900, Richard Lyle Shipley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints began missionary activities in Utah in 1863. Missionaries were active throughout the territory. Over three thousand members of the Utah Mormon Church were brought into the ranks of the Reorganization during the nineteenth century.

Dissatisfied Mormons found the message of the Reorganization attractive. The "new church" denied polygamy and was led by Joseph Smith III, the oldest son of the mormon Prophet Joseph Smith. Its anti-Brigham Young attitude encouraged many dissatisfied Utah Mormons to join the Reorganization. Outstanding Josephite missionaries, often ex-Utah Mormons, were very successful in spreading their new …

The Place Of The Law-Gospel Polarity In The Hermeneutical Theology Of Gerhard Ebeling, David G. Truemper May 1969

The Place Of The Law-Gospel Polarity In The Hermeneutical Theology Of Gerhard Ebeling, David G. Truemper

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present study is an attempt to investigate, in the work of one of the theologians primarily responsible for the contemporary interest in hermeneutical problems, the role that the Law-Gospel Polarity plays in the process of hermeneutics. Gerhard Ebeling, a one-time student of Rudolf Bultmann whose work was first introduced to American theologians by James M. Robinson under the label, “The Hew Hermeneutic,” was chosen as the subject of this investigation because of the extensive use that he makes of the distinction between the Law and the Gospel, and because of his frequent appeals to, and his many studies in, …

Henotẽs:Pauls Term For Christian Unityin Ephesians 4:3 And 4:13, John Edward Helmke

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We believe that in this light the almost casual treatment that henotẽs has received is a distressing situation, commanding our attention and challenging our best efforts. The purpose of this study paper is to help the church continue in its mission to the world by- seeking to better understand that mission in the light of henotẽs.

Studies In American Civilization, Alexander Evanoff Apr 1969

Studies In American Civilization, Alexander Evanoff

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine some theories and theorists in the fields of politics, history, economics, architecture, and literature with the expectation that they would provide some substantial answers and some new directions both toward definition and understanding of the subject of individualism. The dissertation does not attempt to be "definitive" or "comprehensive," but rather it explores aspects of the subject with the hope that a better understanding will emerge. Because of the tremendous breadth and scope possible to the subject, it was determined to limit these studies to certain aspects of political, historical, economic, architectural, and …

Art & Art History ETDs

This thesis deals with Nabi places of exhibition from 1890 to 1898. An identification of the Nabis and their style is made in Chapter I. In Chapter II, the discussion concentrates on the early places of Nabi exhibition: The Independants, Saint-Germain-en-Laye and various small galleries such as Pere Tanguy's paint shop. Chapter III examines the most important place of Nabi exhibition, the Galerie Le Bare de Boutteville. From late 1891 on, this gallery provided the Nabis with an opportunity to exhibit their works in the artistic center of Paris at multiple Expositions des Peintres impressionnistes et symbolistes. Consequently, Le Barc's …

The Impact Of Highland Migrations On The Socio-Spatial Residential Structure Of Lima, Peru From The 1930'S To The Present, David E. Stinson Apr 1969

The Impact Of Highland Migrations On The Socio-Spatial Residential Structure Of Lima, Peru From The 1930'S To The Present, David E. Stinson

Latin American Studies ETDs

In Peru, as in most other South American countries, intensified internal migration—an important but largely unstudied aspect of population dynamics—has stimulated the population growth of one inordinately large city. Metropolitan Lima, Peru’s “primate” city, has increased greatly in size since the 1930’s, and a considerable proportion of this increment is attributable to the absorption of internal migrants coming mostly from the highlands. Within the migrant stream settling in Lima, this distinguishable highland component significantly has affected the city’s residential structure. Existing data do not allow a precise quantitative description of highland migrants entering Lima. Moreover, the terms “highlander” or “serrano” …

El Surrealismo Y Cuatro Poetas De La GeneracióN De 1927, Carlos Marcial De Onís Apr 1969

El Surrealismo Y Cuatro Poetas De La GeneracióN De 1927, Carlos Marcial De Onís

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The Attack On Bourgeois Society: An Introduction To Cultural Despair In The Late Nineteenth And Twentieth Century European Thought, With Four Illustrative Studies From Traditions Of The European Intellectual Milieu, Craig Evan Wollner Apr 1969

The Attack On Bourgeois Society: An Introduction To Cultural Despair In The Late Nineteenth And Twentieth Century European Thought, With Four Illustrative Studies From Traditions Of The European Intellectual Milieu, Craig Evan Wollner

Dissertations and Theses

The rise of the middle class to power and influence in European culture and politics in the nineteenth century created the conditions of modern life which to many European intellectuals were distasteful and ominous. They viewed urbanization, commercialization, industrialization and the qualities of life that they engendered, such as anxiety, limitation of freedom, and pervasive mediocrity in cultural expression, as being inimical to the traditional and more reliable values of European civilization or, in some instances, as being incapable of providing the bases for a free and humane existence.

This study focuses on the attack on bourgeois society in Europe …

The Nineteenth-Century Inversion Of Good And Evil : Its Roots In The Eighteenth Century, And Its Continuation In The Twentieth Century, Frank M. Morgan Apr 1969

The Nineteenth-Century Inversion Of Good And Evil : Its Roots In The Eighteenth Century, And Its Continuation In The Twentieth Century, Frank M. Morgan

Honors Theses

Early in the Nineteenth Century there occurred a change in the literary artist's perception of what conditions and what actions constitute good and evil. This changed perception was a great faction in the development of literature and thinking of that century, and the effects can be traced into our own century. The change accompanied and was an integral part of a general change in the perception of the role of man in the universe. The emphasis on man's role in society was overshadowed by a growing belief in man's value as an individual and a concern wtih individual needs and …

L'Animal Dans La Poesie Du Xix Siecle, Carolyn Frances Baker Apr 1969

L'Animal Dans La Poesie Du Xix Siecle, Carolyn Frances Baker

Master's Theses
