Anglo-Russian Trade - 1919 - 1927, Judith Ann Adkison May 1969

Anglo-Russian Trade - 1919 - 1927, Judith Ann Adkison

History ETDs

In the decade following World War I, British politicians continually debated the issue of trade with Soviet Russia. The Conservatives opposed trade with a revolutionary government which refused to acknowledge the debts of its predecessors. Members of the Labour Party favored resumption of trade as a means of alleviating British unemployment through the expansion of exports. Historians who have treated the subject of Anglo Russian trade have supported Labour's view that the development of this trade would have benefited Britain's economy and relieved unemployment.

The Role Of Rio Grande Do Sul In Brazilian Politics, 1930-1967., Carlos E. CortéS May 1969

The Role Of Rio Grande Do Sul In Brazilian Politics, 1930-1967., Carlos E. CortéS

History ETDs

Rio Grande do Sul traditionally has been Brazil's third most powerful state and has spawned an impressive number of national political leaders. For more than twenty-three of the thirty-eight years since the 1930 revolution, the Brazilian president has been a Riograndense, including current President Arthur da Costa e Silva. This dissertation focuses on the role of this state in Brazilian politics from the Rio Grande-led 1930 revolution, which terminated the First Republic, through the 1964 revolution. which overturned the national government of Riograndense João Goulart. There is also a short discussion of the impact of the 1964 revolution on Rio …

A Critique Of Logical Atomism, Ramesh Nath Patel May 1969

A Critique Of Logical Atomism, Ramesh Nath Patel

Philosophy ETDs

Logical atomism is Russell’s and early Wittgenstein’s view that world is composed of simple sensible, mutually independent atomic facts. Our everyday knowledge and statements of facts are vague. To clarify them we should analyze them till we reach unanalyzable, ultimate atomic facts based only on sense experience. An atomic fact is a particular having one character, or is two or more particulars in a relation. Only external relations hold among atomic acts. The truth of a compound proposition is determinable as a function of the truths of the atomic propositions involved. To dispense with internal relations among atomic facts, we …

Le Monde De Madame De Girardin Vu A Travers Les Lettres Parisiennes., Janina M. Cikotas May 1969

Le Monde De Madame De Girardin Vu A Travers Les Lettres Parisiennes., Janina M. Cikotas

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Between 1836 and 1848 there appeared in La Presse, one of the most important French newspapers, a series of weekly articles entitled Le Courrier de Paris. They were signed by the Vicomte de Launay, a pseudonym for Madame de Girardin, the wife of Emile de Girardin, the owner of this influential publication. These articles generally enjoyed great success.

The author, a young woman of 32, was already well known for her precocious and remarkable poetic talent. Not only had she already been acclaimed for her poems, but she had also manifested her literary talent in some very successful novels and …

Smitten With Pride: The Persona In Jonathan Swift's A Tale Of A Tub, Cole Nessa Foster May 1969

Smitten With Pride: The Persona In Jonathan Swift's A Tale Of A Tub, Cole Nessa Foster

English Language and Literature ETDs

Jonathan Swift's A Tale of a Tub is complex, opening with five prefatory sections. "An Apology" states that "The BOOK-SELLER TO THE READER" is written by the publishers, but "Style and content point clearly to Swift.” Swift writes that the "publisher" is not sure whether the book is finished. This is a hint that the reader should be cautious, but Swift felt his hint insufficient because he added "An Apology’ in the Fifth Edition. There, he points out that “the whole Work is entirely of one hand,” that of the Modern Author, the unifying factor in the work. The work …

Pearl And The Incarnate Word: A Study In The Sacramental Nature Of Symbolism, Joyce Rogers Emert May 1969

Pearl And The Incarnate Word: A Study In The Sacramental Nature Of Symbolism, Joyce Rogers Emert

English Language and Literature ETDs

From early textual, philological and biographical concerns, studies of the Middle English poem Pearl have in recent years, shifted to extended debates. The question of whether it is allegory or personal elegy; discussion of the poem's use of symbol, myth, theology, and exegesis; and comparisons of the poem to contemporary literary works and types have occupied its students. The present study seeks to discover in Pearl the genesis of the poem's inspiration, and in conjunction with this, proposes that medieval theory of literary symbolism, and particularly that in Pearl, was based on a conscious analogy between the Incarnate Word and …

French Expeditions To The Northwest Coast Of America, 1786-1820, Katherine Rotherham Polich May 1969

French Expeditions To The Northwest Coast Of America, 1786-1820, Katherine Rotherham Polich

History ETDs

Three times between the years 1786 and 1820 the French tried to enter the maritime fur trade of the Northwest Coast. Each time events interfered and the French were unable to follow up their efforts. Also conditions on the coast were different each time and found the French unprepared for them. In 1786 Jean François Galaup de La Pérouse arrived on the Northwest Coast during the course of a four year scientific expedition around the world. During his stay on the Northwest Coast he was to investigate the potentials of the trade in sea otter skins and to seek a …

The Earliest Spanish Exploration To The Pacific Northwest., James Garland Caster May 1969

The Earliest Spanish Exploration To The Pacific Northwest., James Garland Caster

History ETDs

The famous Perez exploratory expedition of 1774 and the epochal Hezeta-Bodega voyage of 1775, by which Spa n laid a fresh claim to the Far Northwest, were important segments of the last great chapter of Spanish colonization and exploration along the vast North American Pacific coast. This final, magnificent period began, appropriately enough, in Madrid, Spain, with the appointment of Jose de Galvez as visitadorgeneral of New Spain on February 20, 1765. The new visitador set sail with his official family from Cadiz aboard a frigate of war, the Jason, on April 26, 1765, and arrived at Veracruz the following …

Soldiers At Play: A History Of Social Life At Fort Union, New Mexico,1851-1891, Dale Frederick Giese May 1969

Soldiers At Play: A History Of Social Life At Fort Union, New Mexico,1851-1891, Dale Frederick Giese

History ETDs

Although much has been written about the United States Army and its participation in the Indian Wars, relatively little attention has been devoted to the soldier's recreational life at some of the isolated army posts at which they served. Fort Union, New Mexico, one of the largest military posts in the Southwest, had hundreds of soldiers and civilians living together in this garrison. During Fort Union's forty-year period of existence, the soldiers and civilians employed numerous recreational activities to keep themselves occupied during their leisure hours on New Mexico's frontier.

An Historical And Practical Investigation Of Photogravure, James Norman Kraft Jr. May 1969

An Historical And Practical Investigation Of Photogravure, James Norman Kraft Jr.

Art & Art History ETDs

Photogravure, a unique synthesis of intaglio and photography, is a manual method of printing photographic images in ink from etched copper plates. A print made by this method is a hand-crafted work of art, equal or superior to a silver-gelatin print. Photogravure offers the advantage of permanence through its use of fine ink and pure rag paper. This combination, coupled with the impression into the paper by an intaglio plate, gives the gravure image a richness and subtle relief not possible in the less permanent, flat-surfaced photographic print. In Part I the writer has outlined the history of photogravure--directly related …

The "Depth" Versus The "Breadth" Method For The Development Of Creativity At The Sixth Grade Level, Onetia Jean Leonard May 1969

The "Depth" Versus The "Breadth" Method For The Development Of Creativity At The Sixth Grade Level, Onetia Jean Leonard

Art & Art History ETDs

Statement of Problem: There have been many studies on student behavior, personality and intelligence in relation to creativity. Also, research has been conducted on methodologies of teaching, but very little has been done on the methodology or how we teach art and its relationship to creativity. This study involved an experiment in carious art activities to determine if there was any difference between a breadth (carried activities and media) and a depth (varied activities with concentration in one medium, paper) method of teaching art in developing greater creativity among sixth grade students.

Hypotheses: 1. There is no significant difference between …

Politics, Government, And Man In Swift's 1710-1714 Writings And Gulliver's Travels, Phil R. Phelps May 1969

Politics, Government, And Man In Swift's 1710-1714 Writings And Gulliver's Travels, Phil R. Phelps

English Language and Literature ETDs

Swift's 1710-1714 political writings have usually been ignored by the critics. This neglect has been unfortunate because of the help these writings can give the reader in understanding more completely Swift's masterpiece, Gulliver's Travels. Certain of Swift's major concerns in the writings of 1710-1714, the years during which he served as public spokesman for the Harley-St. John Tory ministry under Queen Anne, appear repeatedly in the later Gulliver's Travels. Ideas which Swift formulated while he was actively involved in the workings of the national government often come under his scrutiny again in Gulliver. In order to gain a …

Developing Use Of Student's Imagination In High School Art Classes, Lawrence Henry Sinnott May 1969

Developing Use Of Student's Imagination In High School Art Classes, Lawrence Henry Sinnott

Art & Art History ETDs

In the introduction of my thesis, I state what I believe to be the basic goals of education in his country today. One of the most important goals in education should be to teach the students how to use their imagination. This goal, I believe, has been greatly neglected. To back up this statement I cite examples from my own personal observation in the classroom. I also use my experience as a substitute teacher, in over twenty schools in the Albuquerque area to verify this point. In addition, I base my study on books and publications which pertain to this …

A Report On A Thesis In Sculpture Entitled "Experiments With Electro-Mechanical Light Switching As A Means Of Visual Expression.", Richard Franco Baronio

Art & Art History ETDs

The purpose of this report is to explain my work with electro-mechanical light switching as a means of visual expression. This work extends over the period, June, 1968, to June, 1969, and is in the form of five experiments. I consider switching light as an art medium, and, rather than works of art, these experiments are investigations of the possibilities of this medium. As an introduction to the experiments, my previous studies in art, both on the graduate level at the University of New Mexico and on the undergraduate level at Brown University, are reviewed. At the end of the …

Odysseus:The Confrontation With Death, Eric N. Havill May 1969

Odysseus:The Confrontation With Death, Eric N. Havill

English Language and Literature ETDs

Man dies. In an absurd universe, one in which it is no longer possible to fall back on the consolations of religion or philosophy, death seems to undermine the meaning of life. It is the attempt of this thesis to examine man's confrontation with the absurdity of his own death in the light of one of his most ancient myths: the Odysseus legend.

It begins by showing that, although Odysseus' driving motivation in Homer's Odyssey is to return home safely to Ithaca, his complexity of character makes him one of the prototypes in Western literature of the uomo universale. It …

Mission Los Santos Angeles De Guevavi:Jesuits On The Pima Frontier, 1691-1767., John L. Kessell

History ETDs

In anticipation, a lively crowd had begun to gather around the corral where the bullfights would soon begin. Solemn Nass and the procession were over now. They were laughing and gossiping -ranchers and settlers, prospectors and soldiers, dozens of them, relatives and compadres -dressed in their gaudy best and come from leagues around at Father Joseph Garrucho's invitation to join in the patronal feast. In honor of the day he had suspended work on the new church, and Don Joaquin dle Casares, master builder from Arizpe, was enjoying himself with the others.

Arthur Seligman And Bronson Cutting: Coalition Government In New Mexico, 1930-1933, Andrea Ammann Parker May 1969

Arthur Seligman And Bronson Cutting: Coalition Government In New Mexico, 1930-1933, Andrea Ammann Parker

History ETDs

Between 1930 and 1933 the Republican party in New Mexico was rapidly declining, while the Democrats were assuming leadership of the legislative and executive branches of government. During these years of transition the Democratic leader, Governor Arthur Seligman, and United States Senator Bronson Cutting, the most powerful Republican figure in the state, effected an alliance that allowed governmental power to be shared by the two major parties. In Seligman’s two campaigns for the governorship, he had the support of Senator Cutting’s Progressive Republican faction, although the Senator himself never personally endorsed Seligman’s Democratic ticket. During the tenth legislature of 1931, …

Loyalists And Rebels : The Election Of 1928 In Virginia, Susan Parker May 1969

Loyalists And Rebels : The Election Of 1928 In Virginia, Susan Parker

Honors Theses

The election of 1928 was a unique event in the political history of Virginia. For the first time since Reconstruction the state went Republican in a national election, Herbert Hoover getting 53.9% of the total vote. This was not the beginning of a definite trend because the state did not go Republican in a presidential election again until 1952. The hold of the Democratic Party over the people appeared as strong as ever on both the local and national levels after this bolt.

Since the Civil War the Republican Party in the South had been identified with Reconstruction, emancipation, and …

Laud's Influence On The Star Chamber From 1630-1637, Leonard I. Sweet May 1969

Laud's Influence On The Star Chamber From 1630-1637, Leonard I. Sweet

Honors Theses

If the Virginia denominations could have forecast President Lincoln's request that the Commonwealth supply 2,340 troops to enforce the suppression of her sister southern states, unanimity would have prevailed from 1859 onward, and this paper would be unnecessary except for a single statement: The religious elements in Virginia endorsed secession. Although many of the clergy professed gifts of prophecy, their vision was eternal rather than secular. A religious calling meant exemplary stewardship as God's vassal, and as such their interests and concerns transcended political affairs. The men of the cloth kept abreast of current event,s but, as God's viceregents, felt …

The Immediate Reaction To The Nat Turner Rebellion (August - November, 1831), Rebecca Saunders May 1969

The Immediate Reaction To The Nat Turner Rebellion (August - November, 1831), Rebecca Saunders

Honors Theses

Being primarily concerned with the safety of their wives and children, however, they felt it necessary to secure their protection. This was done in a variety of ways. Some in the grip of terror fled to the woods with only those provisions they could carry by hand, remaining there for days at the time. Others congregated in public places such as Cross Keys, Jerusalem and the surrounding county seats of Virginia and North Carolina. A letter from Jerusalem on August twenty-forth described the situation there: "Every house, room, and corner in this place is filled with women and children, driven …

The Authenticity Of The Seven Words From The Cross, John Junke May 1969

The Authenticity Of The Seven Words From The Cross, John Junke

Bachelor of Divinity

In this paper I intend to give a critical analysis of the "Seven Words" which Christ spoke while on the cross. I will attempt through research chiefly to challenge or support the authenticity of each “Word" (hereafter the term "Word" will be used without quotation marks. When it is capitalized, it refers to one of the utterances which Christ made while on the cross. In some cases it will actually refer to only one word, as in John 19:30. In other cases it will refer to more than one word, as in Matthew 27:46.).

A Comparative Study Of The Prolegomena In Karl Barth's Christliche Dogmatik Of 1927 And The Kirchliche Dogmatik Of 1932-1938, Heino Olavi Kadai May 1969

A Comparative Study Of The Prolegomena In Karl Barth's Christliche Dogmatik Of 1927 And The Kirchliche Dogmatik Of 1932-1938, Heino Olavi Kadai

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

After his first Prolegomena in 1927 seemed to indicate the shape which his theology was to take, Barth abruptly discontinued his work to start over again. The new beginning in 1932 led to the monumental Kirchliche Dogmatik. Did Barth need to start over again? In what way do the two Prolegomena agree or disagree? What were the advantages of the Kirchliche Dogmatik? These are the questions that should be answered in this study. In the process of the investigation Barth's basic foundations of theology become visible in the historical context in which they were conceived and in which they are …

Division And Reunion In The Presbyterian Church In Korea 1959-1968, Bong Rin Ro May 1969

Division And Reunion In The Presbyterian Church In Korea 1959-1968, Bong Rin Ro

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This study is basically a historical investigation based on sources from both Korea and America. Since the controversial matter in the thesis can be problematical, the writer attempted to select source materials which give a fair representation of both opposing factions. Most of the primary sources in Korean were brought either directly from Korea or made available from Presbyterian missionaries in America who worked in Korea. A brother of the writer, a Presbyterian minister and a seminary student were also instrumental in Korea collecting necessary materials such as the minutes of the General Assembly meetings, official statements of various church …

The Role Of The Symbols In Australian Lutheranism, Elvin Janetzki May 1969

The Role Of The Symbols In Australian Lutheranism, Elvin Janetzki

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

To what extent has the theology of leading churchmen manifested the confessional concern and allegiance evidenced in the statements cited above? How have they understood the term “confessionalism”? Have confessional consciousness and concern been matters of form and law rather than spirit and life? Have they taken high priority in constitutions and been argued in theolo3ical documents and debates but been neglected and taken for granted by the pastors and the laity of the church in home and congregation? How does confessional consciousness and concern compare with other factors and influences that have helped to shape the theology and life …

A Comparative Study Of Protestant Sex Education Literature Past And Present, Donald Becker May 1969

A Comparative Study Of Protestant Sex Education Literature Past And Present, Donald Becker

Bachelor of Divinity

The way in which this challenge is being successfully met through the current sex education materials of various Protestant denominations compared with the way in which this challenge was not met in the sex education materials of the past is the focal point of this research project. The main purpose or intent of this thesis is not that it be a critical analysis of those materials which have been published or used for the teaching of sex within the church in the past. Instead, in view of the fact that the more recent sex education materials represent a number of …

The sixth chapter will deal briefly with the nature of the healing ministry of Jesus and His concern …

General Lutheran History In America, Curtiss Brooks Barby May 1969

General Lutheran History In America, Curtiss Brooks Barby

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study is an attempt to consider the basic philosophical tenets which guided general Lutheran history in America, as well as the historiographical concerns used to support these tenets. According to Abdel Ross Wentz, there are two ·areas of source material which might be considered for such an attempt. The first area concentrates on a group of works which is very large. It includes a complete list of volumes and pamphlets dealing with the various aspects and details of the Lutheran Church in America. If this source was used, it would embrace some thirty thousand titles.
