The Old Testament Background Of The Exodus Motif In Matt. 2:15; 20:28; Acts 7:36, James B. Ilten Apr 1969

The Old Testament Background Of The Exodus Motif In Matt. 2:15; 20:28; Acts 7:36, James B. Ilten

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is based on two principal assumptions. First, the Scriptures of the Old Testament ate on an equal level as God’s inspired revelation to His Church. Second, the historic acts of God in the Old Testament attain their full significance in the person and work of Christ. The writer intends to execute the principle of the analogy of Scripture in the context stated by E. E. Flack.

Moral Basis In Fielding's Irony, Roger Paulson Hailes Apr 1969

Moral Basis In Fielding's Irony, Roger Paulson Hailes

Master's Theses

There rarely has been publishecl a book in any language which is lighter, brighter or more "mirthfully ironic" than Tom Jones . Yet, the modern emphasis on Fielding's serious concern for moral values tends to obscure the nature of his comedy. This comedy is an agent through which he shows his reader mankind's shortcomings. Specifically through the use of all types or irony, we are made to see the ridiculous nature of many of our actions as well as the necessary methods of correction.

1960 : The Dilemma Of Adlai Stevenson, Robert A. Kester Apr 1969

1960 : The Dilemma Of Adlai Stevenson, Robert A. Kester

Honors Theses

The Presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1953-61, seemed to many Americans to be an "era of good feeling." The hard divisions over the Korean War and McCarthyism had been healed, and the country enjoyed peace and prosperity; "I like Ike" was more than just a political slogan--it was a national sentiment.

Yet, to the liberals in America, Eisenhower seemed to be merely a latter-day McKinley. To the liberals, this peace and prosperity was a euphemism for the stagnation and drift caused by the inaction of the Eisenhower Administration.

So, to most American liberals, with their terrible sense of urgency, the …

Activities Of I.G. Farbenindustrie In The United States, 1929 Until March 11, 1942, William C. Neubauer

Honors Theses

The activities of I. G. Farbenindustrie in the United

States afforded Americans the opportunity to observe Third

Reich activities as they existed in pre-war America. This preview

of Naziism in America helped unite popular opinion against

Hitler. It is the purpose of this paper to point out the origins

of such a system in this country, the conditions which nurtured

its growth, characteristics of the system, and the steps which

lead to the collapse of the system. The lack of a detai]ed and

determined policy by the Germans prevented their utilization of

I. G. Farbenindustrie to its upmost strategic value …

The works of J, D. Salinger have progressed in several ways from his earliest published works. Differences In Anglo-American Policy On The Strategic Bombardment Of Germany During World War Ii, 1943-1944, Eugene G. Venable Mar 1969

Differences In Anglo-American Policy On The Strategic Bombardment Of Germany During World War Ii, 1943-1944, Eugene G. Venable

History ETDs

The different strategic bombing policies of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) and the United States Army Air Force (U.S.A.A.F.) toward Germany, 1943-1944, were both basic and important. As a part of the Anglo-American coalition of World War II, these differences persisted in spite of vigorous efforts for their solution. Only when the Anglo-American air forces realized the precariousness of their position in favor of strategic bombardment did they seriously attempt to modify their disagreement over policy. Even this action, however, was taken superficially. The bombing differences were largely confined to target selection. R.A. F. Bomber Command, led by Air Marshal …

Evolution And The Ultimate Concern., Lowell Randall Rogers Mar 1969

Evolution And The Ultimate Concern., Lowell Randall Rogers

History ETDs

In the twentieth century the evolutionary perspective, which became popular during the nineteenth century larger due to the work of Charles Darwin, has become the only view acceptable to science and the only sound basis for a philosophy of nature acceptable in the modern world. The acceptance of the evolutionary perspective in science has led to a search for the implications of this fact in other areas of life and has opened up a new dimension of thought concerning the destiny of man, his duty in his present existence, and the meaning of his life and the universe. The thought …

The Literary Relationship Between The Gospels Of John And Luke With Special Reference To John 20:1-18, Thomas Niermann Mar 1969

The Literary Relationship Between The Gospels Of John And Luke With Special Reference To John 20:1-18, Thomas Niermann

Master of Divinity Thesis

A problem that has long captured the critical attention of New Testament scholars has been the so-called Synoptic problem, which seeks to identify and explain the literary relationships that exist among the first three Gospels. A similar and no less vexing problem is that of the literary relationship between the Synoptics and the Gospel of John. Of the three Synoptics, Mark offers perhaps the most striking parallels with the Fourth Gospel and therefore the strongest evidence of literary dependence on the part of John. Matthew, on the other hand, offers the fewest parallels and hence the least compelling evidence for …

The Crisis Of Harry Emerson Fosdick:His Confrontation With Neo-Orthodoxy, Lynn Birleffi Darr Mar 1969

The Crisis Of Harry Emerson Fosdick:His Confrontation With Neo-Orthodoxy, Lynn Birleffi Darr

History ETDs

Every Sunday afternoon from 1928 to 1946, millions of radios in America were tuned to Harry Emerson Fosdick's popular "National Vespers." Through the medium of radio, the written work, and "live" sermons, Harry Emerson Fosdick was considered to be the most influential clergyman in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. Eloquent, communicative and prolific, Fosdick inspired several generations of Americans. His published sermons outsold those of any other contemporary American preacher.

Fosdick never pretended to be a theological innovator or a seminal thinker. For that reason, among others, he was willing to acknowledge and consider …

The Gospel As Formulated In The Apostolic Tradition: An Exegetical Examination Of 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, David Yagow Feb 1969

The Gospel As Formulated In The Apostolic Tradition: An Exegetical Examination Of 1 Corinthians 15:1-11, David Yagow

Bachelor of Divinity

But this pericope is not intended merely to clarify Paul’s doctrine of eschatology. It is obvious that Paul wants to straighten out some muddleheaded thinking and to enunciate anew the historic kernel of the kerygma. But the pericope has a double function. It serves also to validate Paul’s apostolic credentials as an heir to the earliest tradition. Paul establishes his authority, authenticity, and reliability as an apostolic witness before he moves from the kerygmatic summary to unfold his elaborate argument in support of the necessity of the resurrection.

Vincent Van Gogh And Japonisme: One Source Of His Artistic Development, Mayching M. Kao Jan 1969

Vincent Van Gogh And Japonisme: One Source Of His Artistic Development, Mayching M. Kao

Art & Art History ETDs

The artistic development of Vincent van Gogh displayed pronounced changes after the artist’s arrival in Paris in 1886. His colors became bright and clear; his line became bolder; and his composition tended to be two dimensional. These changes developed more prominently during his Arles period from 1888to 1889. One of the major factors in the transformation of his art may be explained by his involvement in a current vogue in Paris: Japonisme—the appreciation of Ukiyo-e prints.

The purpose of the thesis is to explore the extent of van Gogh’s involvement in Japonisme and to establish the influence of the Japanese …

Richard Hooker And John Locke : Political Theory In Perspective, Alice M. Justice Jan 1969

Richard Hooker And John Locke : Political Theory In Perspective, Alice M. Justice

Honors Theses

John Locke in his Second Treatise on Civil Government quoted extensively from Richard Hooker's Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity. It has often been taken for granted that Hooker was a precursor of the political theories of the origen of government, the consent of the governed, and sovereignty as developed and perfected by Locke. The historical and philosophical problem to be considered in this thesis is the relationship of Hooker to Locke: the purpose of the two works, the particular development of ideas in each, the concepts borrowed or shared, and the historical realities and philosophical outlooks which contribute to their distinctive …

The Development Of Lenin's Theory Of Imperialism, Robert L. Musick Jan 1969

The Development Of Lenin's Theory Of Imperialism, Robert L. Musick

Honors Theses

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, devoted revolutionary and architect of the Soviet state, ranks as the foremost exponent of Marxist economic and political thought. As a theorist Lenin interpreted and amplified the teachings of Marx and contributed several concepts to Communist doctrine. Chief among those contributions was his theory of imperialism as the highest, final, decadent stage of capitalism.

Lenin's definitive essay on the subject, "Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism," was written in 1916 and culminated several years of intensive thought and reading. The essence of the "new" imperialism that Lenin described was the competition among several modern world powers for …

Winfield Townley Scott: Conversations On Poets And The Art Of Poetry, Donald Dean Eulert Jan 1969

Winfield Townley Scott: Conversations On Poets And The Art Of Poetry, Donald Dean Eulert

English Language and Literature ETDs

Winfield Townley Scott, who published ten volumes of poetry between 1937 and 1967, has been highly praised by noted poets and critics, but he has yet to gain much popular recognition. For one thing, he wrote personal and lyric poetry in a time when the dominant movement in poetry was an escape from personality. For another, he devoted his lifetime to refining his poetry, until a casual reader may miss the subtle music and variations worked from a direct, simple language. A third reason for his lack of general recognition is simply the time lag necessary to become familiar with …

A Lecture Series On An Analytic Interpretation Of Husserl's Phenomenolgy, Ellen S. Saslaw

Senior Scholar Papers

The nature of this project had changed a good deal since it began. Since the changes in its form are largely reflections of the problem dealt with, it should be of some value to recount them here. In the beginning, the project was to be a comparison between phenomenology and existentialism, and contemporary analytic philosophy, The purpose of the comparison was to find common views between the two schools which have been thought to be conceptually opposite. The school of phenomenology, which is the philosophic theory used by the more literary existentialists. Research then, was centered on Husserl, who is …

Improving Sunday School Teaching With Audio-Visual Use, Won He Lee

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Someone estimated that America has 98 per cent of the world' s radios and 99.4 per cent of its televisions. 1 According to a study, the American family has the television receiver turned on thirty-four hours each week. The more surprising fact was that the families who spend the most time with television are the families who have had their sets the longest. 2 A survey of the Notion Pictures Association of America showed that the average high school graduate in this country has seen 500 films and watched 15,000 hours of television. Considering the fact that he has spent …
