Investigations at the Native American site complex of Stark Farms in Mississippi, USA, have yielded numerous examples of metal artifacts of European origin. Our study suggests that they derive from contact between the AD 1540–1541 winter encampment of the Spanish Hernando de Soto expedition and the local Indigenous polity. The artifacts display a wide range of modifications, uses, and depositional contexts congruent with hybrid practices. We argue that the early colonial setting of Stark Farms requires a different perspective on cultural mixing than is often applied in studies of European colonialism. En esta presentación se cuestionan las normas o las propuestas del llamado ‘lenguaje inclusivo’ que, según sus propulsores, buscan ‘visualizar a la mujer’ porque entienden que el uso del género masculino con valor genérico implica ‛una ocultación de la mujer a través del lenguaje’. Se muestra que, en el habla natural y ordinaria, la mención explícita de ambos géneros no es necesaria y no se puede justificar con argumentos lingüísticos. Honor, Excrement, Ethnography: Colonial Knowledge Between Missionary And Militaire In French Algeria, Joseph W. Peterson

In 1865, an overly aggressive missionary in the Kabyle mountains of French Algeria was tricked into sitting in human excrement, publicly humiliated by the tribe he hoped to convert. Or was he? Historians of French Algeria have recounted this story as confirmation of the scholarly consensus: that public missions to Muslims were either nonexistent or delusional and short-lived in the early decades of French Algeria. But these historians have relied on a version of the incident that was authored by an unsympathetic military administrator. Background The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a growing global denomination with strict substance use abstinence and recommended dietary requirements that together are called the “Health Message.” Abstinence from alcohol and tobacco is a requirement of membership and a plant-based diet is strongly advised. Purpose While a wide variety of research has reported the Adventist health advantage, very little research has been conducted on Adventist members’ attitudes toward and adherence to the Health Message. This research examines members' views, from a global survey, about the health message, personal adherence, and belief that adherence ensures salvation. Methods The survey was conducted in …

A Presentation at the Connecticut Digital Humanities 2021 Conference. Translations are one way that people learn about unfamiliar cultures. Creating a translation is complicated, as words often have different connotations in different cultures that must be understood and conveyed. A good translator pays attention to the style, language and vocabulary unique to the two languages. Translators often differ when deciding how to convey the original work’s meanings, images and themes. Many prominent foreign language titles have been addressed by different translators. Research about music pervades every discipline because music touches every area of life. Studies revealing the salutary effects of music can be found not only in music educator research, but in research in psychology, speech and hearing, child development, neuroscience, and increasingly, health and wellness, aging, rehabilitation and recovery. Since my focus is especially in the areas of language and literacy, I research the positive effects of music on reading, writing, and learning languages - and of this, there is no shortage. Simply conducting expeditions was not enough to define the boundaries of the Louisiana Purchase. To be useful, the knowledge of Louisiana that Jefferson’s and Wilkinson’s soldiers and scientists gained from observation and inquiry needed to be interpreted and published. Jefferson’s “Message from the President” delivered to Congress on February 19, 1806, made some of their findings available to the public for the first time. His report informed the world that the Lewis and Clark and Hunter-Dunbar expeditions had collected a wealth of scientific information. It contained Lewis and Clark’s interim report written during the winter of 1804-1805, information documenting Hunter …

Translations As Representations Of Cultural Bias, Sarah Theimer

A presentation at the American Library Association's Midwinter Conference this presentation discusses how translations are not simply the movement of a resource from the source language to the target language. Transitioning a work into another language necessarily carries with it the bias of the target culture. Bias is demonstrated in different ways. Publishers decide what should and should not get published. Translators decide what should get included in the text to be meet the expectations of the source culture. Translations are often are incompletely described in library catalogs, which further inhibit the users' ability to make an informed choice.

Buddhas And Body Language: The Literary Trope Of The Buddha's Smile, David Fiordalis

This essay explores how classical Buddhist literature, across a variety of traditional genres, portrays the wondrous smile of the Buddha. Despite its literary register, the Buddha’s smile is first and foremost a nonverbal gesture, and if we are to understand its significance, then we must employ a theoretical approach that treats it as such. Multimodality provides such an approach. While an emergent body of psychological research has argued that the smile is a universal human gesture connected to a rather limited set of emotional states like happiness, the recognition that smiles can be voluntary acts highlights the importance of situational …

Este ensayo explora cómo retrata la literatura budista clásica la sonrisa del Buda. La sonrisa del Buda es un gesto no verbal, y para entender su significado debemos emplear un enfoque teórico que la trate como tal. La multimodalidad puede proporcionar tal enfoque. Often, artifacts, most importantly bullets and spent shell casings, found at the location of the Battle of the Little Big Horn have been used independently of other sources to make or refute certain theories on the encounter. Books and articles based on these finds have advanced many arguments on troop dispositions, types of weapons employed, army movements, the locations of the fighting, and the duration and intensity of combat. Philately and choral works can be excellent integrative pedagogical tools when teaching Italian Romanticism at the undergraduate level. In the classroom, postage stamps provide an historical narrative for students and can help clarify the political, artistic and cultural mood of the time. The intrinsic symbolism of stamps represents the way a nation wants to be seen by the rest of the world. Instrumental and choral music, in their infinite combination of tones, combine sound with sung words, creating an artistic subtext that reveals the complexity and variety of human aesthetic expression. Back Vowel Dynamics And Distinctions In Southern American English, Joseph A. Stanley, Margaret E. L. Renwick, Katherine Ireland Kuiper, Rachel M. Olen

Southern American English is spoken in a large geographic region in the United States. Its characteristics include back-vowel fronting (e.g., in goose, foot, and goat), which has been ongoing since the mid-nineteenth century; meanwhile, the low back vowels (in lot and thought) have recently merged in some areas. We investigate these five vowels in the Digital Archive of Southern Speech, a legacy corpus of linguistic interviews with sixty-four speakers born 1886-1956. We extracted 89,367 vowel tokens and used generalized additive mixed-effects models to test for socially-driven changes to both their relative phonetic placements and the shapes of their formant trajectories. …

This article describes a qualitative study of pre-service art education students that was designed to explore relationships between mindfulness, self-inquiry, and artistic practices. The researchers, who are art educators, were curious about how mindfulness practices might connect, overlap or influence the personal artistic practice of the participants. Although mindfulness is often used as an intervention to counter the stresses of school and teaching, mindfulness can also be thought of as a counter cultural phenomenon that explores possibilities of a critical pedagogy. While mindfulness and self-care practices can have important positive benefits and may lead to deeper personal understanding, these practices …

An analysis of Luther’s views on marriage and family will reveal that Luther’s reformation was not just theological but also profoundly sociological. His rejection of celibacy as a form of superior spirituality, his elevation of marriage and family life to the arena of spirituality, his moderate ideas on divorce are now commonly accepted views among the Christian community.
