David sowed the poisonous seeds of sin and self-destruction. Consequently, he reaped what he had sowed, and it was bitter reaping, mirrored in the atrocities that visited his family through the dysfunctional behavior of his children. The anger, rape, murder, conspiracy, intrigues, and hostility present a somber warning of how sexual sins can destroy the family’s fabric and mess up the lives of children and those with whom they associate, and consequently affect the future generation. The hope that is still available to them is through a new identity in Christ.

A recurring challenge for art educators is how to include Black voices within the art curriculum. This challenge seems ever more relevant as a pandemic underlined the inequalities and injustices within our culture and society. A critical question for many White visual arts educators is: How do I, as a White educator, bring important issues of race, privilege, ideology, gender, and anti-racism into the art classroom? Este artículo intenta contribuir a un mejor conocimiento del componente léxico del español dominicano en las siguientes áreas: a) el valor de la escolaridad y de la edad como factores que favorecen la presencia de anglicismos, b) el alcance de las distinciones diafásicas, y c) el reconocimiento del léxico distintivo del país. Con ese propósito, se trabajó con datos proporcionados por dos grupos de escolares de diferentes edades: 11 y 19 años, respectivamente. Por otra parte, se ofrece un análisis general del problema de la sinonimia en el contexto de la disponibilidad léxica de los dominicanos.

GRANT WOOD'S American Gothic (1930) has likely been reproduced, parodied, and lampooned more than any other painting in American history (Figure 1). As scholars Wanda Corn, Steven Biel, and others have observed, the scene of an Iowa farmer and his daughter (often erroneously thought to be his wife) has proven to be remarkably adaptable for nearly a century.1 An early example of its adoption occurred 11 years after Wood's work was finished, when it was appropriated by Gordon Parks, a young Black photographer. The concept of hesed (pronounced khesed) 1 is unfamiliar to most Bible readers. This is partly due to the fact that it is a Hebrew word found in the Old Testament; thus, we will never come across the word hesed anywhere in our King James Version (KJV). Moreover, the term is difficult to translate, the KJV providing no less than fifteen different terms to signify the presence of hesed in the text, the most common being mercy, kindness, and lovingkindness.2 Yet the principle of hesed may be one of the most important doctrinal concepts in the Old Testament, …

In 2019 there existed a legal entity known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This fact will likely strike most readers as unexceptional. More interesting, however, prior to 2019 there had been no such legal entity as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for over 150 years, the last of that name likely having been disincorporated in 1862. Sanctuary In Time: Shabbat As The Soul Of Modern Jewry And The Essence Of “Doing” Judaism, Trevan G. Hatch, Loren D. Marks

According to the Hebrew Scriptures, Shabbat was established from the foundations of the world. It was the climax of God’s creation (Gen 1:1– 2:3; Ex 20:11). God “hallowed” the seventh day “because on it, [He] rested from all the work that he had done in creation” (Gen 2:3, NRSV). Shabbat is also associated with the Exodus from Egypt (see Deut 5:12– 15; cf. Ex 23:9– 12). God commanded Israel to observe Shabbat as a remembrance that they “were slaves in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there” (Deut 5:15, NRSV). After the Exodus, …

As Yellowstone National Park celebrates its 150th anniversary as the first such park in the world, it is fascinating to rediscover the records of mountain men and and that the same features that enthrall modern visitors captivated them as well. “Sonder” is the realization that other people with whom we share the mortal coil have lived lives just as complex and wonderous as our own. Americans can no better appreciate this than when they stand in Yellowstone National Park today and marvel at the same grandeur mountain men witnessed two hundred years ago.

The acoustics of speech sounds can vary dramatically depending on phonetic context, yet listeners can reliably process spoken language in a rapid and seemingly effortless manner. Previous research suggests that acoustic variations in speech can actually facilitate, rather than disrupt, the processing of spoken language, and sometimes listeners can even use fine-grained acoustic cues in the unfolding speech signal to predict the sound(s) of an upcoming word. For example, it has been reported that listeners fixate their eyes on target words faster when the pre-target word contains compatible vowel-to-vowel coarticulation cues [1, 2]. This volume begins with the same event the Bible itself does—the Creation. The Creation narrative and the Garden of Eden narrative that immediately follows have been the subject of much study throughout the years. Over the past century, particular attention has been given to the similarities between it and other ancient Near Eastern Creation narratives. For Latter-day Saints, the Creation and Garden of Eden narratives play central roles in their worship practices, the narratives themselves laying down the plan of salvation God ordained for all his children. Following the deliverance from the Red Sea, the Israelites encamped at Sinai, where events would take place that defined them from that period on, such as receiving the law of Moses and the rites associated with the tabernacle. For Latter-day Saints, perhaps even more significant is the event of the provocation, an event that is alluded to in Restoration scripture and that addresses the most profound of religious experiences: entering into the presence of God. One Or None? Truth And Self-Transformation For Śaṅkara And Kamalaśīla, David Fiordalis

This article explores how two influential 8th-century Indian philosophers, Śaṅkara and Kamalaśīla, treat the threefold scheme of learning, reasoning, and meditation in their spiritual path philosophies. They have differing institutional and ontological commitments: the former, who helped establish Advaita Vedānta as the religious philosophy of an elite Hindu monastic tradition, affirms an unchanging “self” (ātman) identical to the “world-essence” (brahman); the latter, who played a significant role in the development of Buddhist monasticism in Tibet, denies both self and essence.
