La Variation Du /R/ Dans L'Espagnol De Santiago, Orlando Alba Jan 1986

La Variation Du /R/ Dans L'Espagnol De Santiago, Orlando Alba

Faculty Publications

Cousin Laman In The Wilderness: The Beginnings Of Brigham Young's Indian Policy, Richard E. Bennett Jan 1986

Cousin Laman In The Wilderness: The Beginnings Of Brigham Young's Indian Policy, Richard E. Bennett

Faculty Publications

Historians of the American West have observed that compared with most other mid-19th century American overlanders, whether Oregon-bound farmers or California Agronauts, the Mormons enjoyed a relatively more amicable, more peaceful relationship with the American Indian. Furthermore several contend with cause that Brigham Young was the principal architect of peace with the Ute, Shoshoni, Navaho, Hopi, and other tribes in the deserts and valleys of "Deseret," the Mormon Zion in the Great Basin Kingdom. Leonard Arrington, Davis Bitton, James Allen, and other modern writers have argued that Young pursued a conciliatory (if not self protective and condescending) policy toward the …

The Gospel And Feminism: A Proposal For Lutheran Dogmatics, Lois E. Malcolm

Faculty Publications

The aim of this essay is to identify the theological, and deeply Christian, point of resonance between Lutheran and feminist theologies. It begins with a brief overview of themes in Christian feminist theologies; it then offers rationale and recommendations for why and how Lutheran dogmatics should critically engage feminist perspectives so that it can better serve the task of assisting Christians in their proclamation of the promise in Jesus’ gospel.

Labor Room Or Morgue: The Power And Limits Of Pluralism And Christology, Patrick R. Keifert Jan 1985

Labor Room Or Morgue: The Power And Limits Of Pluralism And Christology, Patrick R. Keifert

Faculty Publications

Professor Wilson is right, “Christological reflection is crossing a threshold...entering an unfamiliar room.” My response focuses his point by posing a question and proposing an answer. Is this new room a labor room or a morgue? Will christological reflection in this room labor and give birth to a new and vibrant orthodoxy and orthopraxis? Or will it die shy and embarrassed for lack of moral and spiritual fortitude, or intellectual and practical wisdom? The answer to the question of morgue or labor room lies in marking the powers and limits of christology and pluralism.

In December 1861, several Norwegian families, led by Andrew Olsen and Tarel Johnson, organized the first Norwegian-American Adventist church in Oakland Township, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Oakland Township is part of the Koshkonong Norwegian-American Settlement, which includes southeastern Dane County, southwestern Jefferson County, and northern Rock County, Wisconsin.

The Olsen, Johnson, Loe, and Serns families were from a rural district in Vest-Agder County, Norway. On March 20, 1850, Andrew Olsen, his half-brother, Halvor Olsen, Ole Hegland Serns, and their families left for the U. S. from Kristiansand, Norway.

In 1854, Soren Loe and Tarel Johnson moved to Oakland to be near …

Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken Sep 1983

Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken

Faculty Publications

Current planning and development of collections in the social sciences and humanities for German-speaking Europe, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia reflect the changing needs of research, strict budgetary limits, the prevailing publishing market in those countries, and certain innovations in library automation. Librarians responsible for supporting an area study of Northern Europe may shape the trends to their advantage by careful policy planning, by informed financial choices, by the use of data bases and resource sharing, by privately-nurtured channels of acquisition and support and by a continuing self-education program that might include participation in the activities of the CES and WESS.
