Tommaso Campanella's La Città Del Sole: Topography And Astrology, Ilona Klein

At the beginning of the seventeenth century the Dominican friar from Calabria, fra' Tommaso Campanella, had already solidified his anti-Aristotelian theories, had been persecuted and arrested, and was simulating madness in order to save his life while incarcerated in Naples. When Campanella conceived La Città del Sole under these circumstances in 1602, he was interpreting Telesio's naturalistic philosophy in a metaphysical manner, and was expressing in nuce the fundamental theories he would amplify two years later in Del Senso delle Cose e delle Magie.

Creating A Shared History: Serial Narratives In The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894, Sherry Baker

"Creating a Shared History: Serial Narratives in The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894" is a cultural press history and textual analysis of contemporary indigenous serial literature in a nineteenth-century Mormon young women's periodical. It tests press historian Catherine Covert's assertions that some of the functions of the press are (1) to be a conservator of values, and (2) to engender harmony and affiliation among community members. The investigator places the Journal within the historical/ cultural context from which it was written, and identifies specific messages in the serial narratives that encouraged the preservation of Mormon values and Mormon community affiliation. The question of God’s wrath is an old thorny problem for Christian theology. Simply expressed, one wonders how can a loving God be angry when anger is associated with a loss of temper, and a loss of self-control, and love is expressed in forbearance, patience, and graciousness. Can love be angry?

Yet, the scriptures speak often about an angry God (Nehemiah 1:6; Mark 3:5; and John 2:13-17).

Some treated this problem as only a human metaphor. Others as a pedagogical tool. Cultural anthropologists saw in it a vestige of primitive fear of taboos.

Beginning in the second half of the nineteenth century and extending to the outbreak of the Second World War, Brazil was to receive a stream of Polish immigrants seeking fabled "new lands" in South America. While there is a considerable literature on this subject, the vast majority of the works available are, of course, in Polish and Portuguese with a considerable number in German and Spanish. Very few items are available in English, and most of these works assume a fairly extensive knowledge of Polish history in addition to Latin American history. Interpreting and preaching on these Markan texts in the Epiphany Season requires attention to a series of contexts, including the narrative setting provided for these separate units and the congregational setting within which they will be interpreted. The interpretive task would seem to be to get at the promise in these epiphany texts while taking seriously the particularity of the good news and the specific setting in which the lives of hearers are planted.

Several papers have appeared on the strategies of communication used by L2 learners. However, very little work has been done to determine the underlying psychological processes that generate communication strategies (CS). This paper assumes that any description of CS should be based on a description of the processes governing CS. The paper attempts to correlate CS with psychological processes by analyzing interlanguage (IL) written discourse produced by advanced Tamil learners of English as a Second Language.

The reaping of the harvest through baptism is a highlight in the life of God's church. When the new Christian confirms his spiritual marriage to the Lord in baptism, we witness the outcome of a long, painstaking process wherein humans, as coworkers with God, have unselfishly worked to gain the victory over the devil. The ecumenical movement in contemporary America should not be surprised to find itself in a quandary of questions regarding the "ministry” of the gospel. From the first decades following the ascension of Jesus until the present the whole complex of emerging questions of ministry have been intimately bound up with society-wide crises of authority. Any discussion of the ministry of the baptized eventually reaches a point where someone asks, “If all the baptized are ministers, then why and how do we distinguish between the ministry of clergy and laity?” One promising answer begins, “The clergy have a public ministry....” The unspoken half of that answer, seldom said, but powerfully lived out in contemporary capitalistic cultures is, “The laity’s ministry is private.” This response constricts the scope of the gospel and plays into the contemporary gulf between the public and private dimensions of our lives.

Gamma And Dynamic Range Needs For An Hdtv Electronic Cinematography System, Harry Mathias

A cinematographer's perspective regarding gamma and contrast manipulation in video and film is given. In film, a selective exposure can be used; the negative characteristic is the cinematographer's creative tool. The use of film as a video medium is considered, both negative and positive transfer. Contrast reproduction in the video medium is explained, and film and video gammas are compared. Also compared with the film gamma is the gamma obtained with an HDTV camera. Giovanni Maria Artusi is well known for his conservative role in the debate between advocates of the prima and seconda pratiche. Contemporary authors marvel at Artusi's audacity in criticizing the genius of Monteverdi. Though often viewed as a pedant, Artusi was a significant Italian theorist who understood ancient Greek theory and had innovative ideas for applying this ancient knowledge to modern practice.
