Twice a year, in the May ann November issues, RTE publishes a selected bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Serving as a religious professional is a complex task with a wide variety of demands and responsibilities. This variety contributes to a professional identity that requires the fulfillment of a number of roles. The Levels of Family Involvement (LFI) model (W. J. Doherty, 1995) offers a structure for helping clergy ascertain which roles may be most beneficial to a family in a given set of circumstances, as well as which roles are beyond their training and mission. The LFI is offered as a guideline for helping clergy select modes of intervention and identify areas for personal and professional development. Case …

Missionary work in Scandinavia began 150 years ago with the arrival of the first LDS missionaries in Denmark on June 14, 1850. In keeping with the observance of the sesquicentennial of the Scandinavian Mission, the Church News presents this article by J. Michael Hunter about two prominent Latter-day Saint artists from earlier days in that part of the world. The art and work of Carl Christian Anton Christensen (1831-1921) from Denmark and Danquart Anton Weggeland (1827-1918) from Norway are discussed, focusing on their use of art to tell stories. Images of their art accompany the article.

Emerging research suggests that alcohol, tobacco and drug-related problems may be higher in lesbian and gay communities than in the population as a whole. At the same time, alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries have increased marketing strategies that are targeted specifically to lesbian and gay communities. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) and HTV/AIDS organizations, often marginalized and under-funded, have frequently faced significant challenges in funding programs and special events. These organizations are often the very same groups needed to promote and support effective substance abuse countermeasures in LGBT communities. Who Exactly Is Living La Vida Loca: The Legal And Political Consequences Of Latino-Latina Ethnic And Racial Stereotypes In Film And Other Media, Ediberto Román

This piece, however, will not simply expose the insidious stereotypes of Latinas and Latinos. It will undertake the more involved task of drawing a nexus between the societal prejudice which leads to the stereotyping and the legal and political consequences that result from it. Specifically, I argue that these media images, myths, metaphors, and stereotypes play a critical role in establishing society's vision of Latinas and Latinos. In other words, these stereotypes serve to reinforce both the characterizations of Latinas and Latinos from the perspectives of both the dominant and the dominated. On 11 September 1887, the front page of the Norfolk Virginian had a bold headline, "Four Hundred Mormons," along with the following information: "The Old Dominion steamer Richmond, which arrived from New York yesterday, had on board four-hundred and twenty Mormon immigrants from the British Isles who had arrived in New York on Thursday on the steamship Wisconsin. The immigrants are all new converts to the Mormon religion and will swell the number of adherents to the Brigham Young faith in the territory considerably. THIS small fragment (olim 4Q576) is light brown in colour, and the ink is well preserved. It measures 4 cm by 2.5 cm. The writing is legible and preserves portions of five lines of text. The distance between each of lines 1-3 is 5 mm, while lines 3-5 are spaced 3 mm apart. The letters are 2-3 mm in height. The orthography is full, as evidenced by the use of waw as a mater lectionis three times ('ili'?~ once and '?i:, twice).

"A Man In A Painted Garment:" The Social Functions Of Jesting In Elizabethan Rhetoric And Courtesy Manuals, Christopher Holcomb

Many Elizabethan rhetoric and courtesy manuals offer jesting as a powerful rhetorical strategy for managing specific situations. Although highly pragmatic, the manuals' treatments of the subject imply a sociology of humor that classifies jests according to the broader social functions they serve: jests which preserve existing social relations and jests which disrupt, or even challenge, them. What eludes this classificatory scheme, however, are the properties of jesting itself. Jesting is always a flirtation with disorder and often serves conservative and disruptive functions simultaneously. Conceptual Clarification And Policy-Related Science: The Case Of Chemical Hormesis, Kevin C. Elliott

This paper examines the epistemological warrant for a toxicological phenomenon known as chemical hormesis. First, it argues that conceptual confusion contributes significantly to current disagreements about the status of chemical hormesis as a biological hypothesis. Second, it analyzes seven distinct concepts of chemical hormesis, arguing that none are completely satisfactory. Finally, it suggests three ramifications of this analysis for ongoing debates about the epistemological status of chemical hormesis. This serves as a case study supporting the value of philosophical methodologies such as conceptual clarification for addressing contemporary scientific disputes, including policy-related scientific disputes that may be heavily influencedby social and …

This is another of those Year 2000 articles, but instead of gazing into my crystal ball to predict what the future of YA literature will be, I'm looking backward, tracing the genealogy of the people who established, refined, defended, and maintained the study of literature for adolescents.

A photograph dating to June 1897 shows the granite shaft for the Monument to Brigham Young and the Pioneers (Brigham Young Monument) loaded on a wagon for transport from the Little Cottonwood Canyon quarry to Salt Lake City. The photograph was donated to the Archives Division of the Historical Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in 1994. “New Photograph of the Granite Shaft for the Brigham Young Monument” provides background on the photograph, its provenance, and the events associated with it.

The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch is a charming children's picture book. Part of its charm lies in its ability to anticipate the conventions of the fairy tale genre, creating expectations for readers, then pushing the boundaries of the genre in novel ways. As the story moves outside traditional expectations with its unexpected reversals (the princess fights the dragon to save the prince, and the fight is more mental trickery than physical battle), the boundaries of the genre are muddied, making my secondary students smile when I read to them. But it is the ending that surprises them most. …

‘A Light To Jacob’ And Other Interesting Finds In 4qmiscellaneous, Dana M. Pike, Andrew C. Skinner

One purpose of our paper is to present a final pre-publication report on our efforts to publish the approximately 2900 fragments from Qumran Cave 4 that comprise our allotment, designated "4QMiscellaneous and Unidentified." These fragments are found on 40 PAM plates, 43.660-43.686, and 43.688-43.701. We have examined all of the plates in the Rockefeller Museum that contain our fragments, have compared them with the PAM photographic plates received from the Israel Antiquities Authority, and are now working to finish preparing our transcriptions of and notes on these fragments. We will submit our work for publication in DJD XXXIII in 1999.
