Most mass-mediated popular cultures surround us with enemies, offering up vivid depictions of a world seen as either “for us” or “against us.” Christian faith, on the other hand, draws us towards love even in the presence of hatred. A close look at the surprisingly countercultural world of Harry Potter provides some ways forward in walking the path of love.

Martin Luther King, Jr., begins with Jesus’ command to love the enemy and moves to an understanding that in the “beloved community” God is “changing the face of the enemy.” In that beloved community, where all are brought together in a way that changes all, true freedom is found.

Contrary to the common understanding, the “enemies of the cross of Christ” in Phil 3:18 are the same people who “proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry” in 1:15. These “enemies” want Paul’s fame, but not the suffering that is built into loving.

In this paper I will offer some reflections on one instance of apophasis in a specific Mahāyāna Buddhist doctrinal treatise, known as the Madhyāntavibhāga (“Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes,” ca. fourth century CE). I will attempt to formally distinguish such apophatic doctrines from doctrines of ineffability, and consider what apophatic doctrines might contribute to the impasse regarding “truth” which characterizes certain approaches to the comparative philosophy of religion. Since this paper is intended as a contribution to the comparative philosophy of religion, I will begin with a few remarks on the nature of that enterprise.

A Question Of Progress And Welfare: The Jitney Bus Phenomenon In Atlanta, 1915-1925, Julian C. Chambliss

The article focuses on the popularity of private buses modified for passenger service known as jitneys in Atlanta, Georgia as alternatives to streetcars from 1915 to 1925. Jitneys were originated from Los Angeles, California in 1914 and became a success in Atlanta because of their low fares and convenience. Complaints are also listed in response to the venture, citing streetcar companies and city officials urging regulation of jitneys due to their competitive pressure. Commentary is also given noting the social class conflict which was manifested in the transportation policy debate.

This research addresses the complexities of identity development of elementary and middle school preservice literacy teachers during their teacher education program using a poststructural feminist theoretical lens. This research investigated two questions: 1) How do preservice teachers develop their identity as teachers of literacy in the midst of authoritative discourses? 2) What kinds of strategies and discourses do preservice literacy teachers use to negotiate the competing discourses of literacy during student teaching? The results indicated that the identities of the preservice literacy teachers were in transition during their teacher education program and authoritative discourses were at work constituting their subjectivities …

The postmodern condition of contemporary art is characterized by appropriation, layering of styles, recontextualization, interaction between text and image, and a willingness to embrace multiple meanings (Fehr, 1997; Gude, 2004). As the high school teacher contemplates the world of contemporary art and the expanse of visual culture, an insistent question comes to mind: What work of art or artifact of visual culture will provide the richest educational experiences for adolescent students?
