Sir John Harvey first became connected with the colony of Virginia in 1623, when he was appointed to a commission to investigate the administration of the colony. James I, having had numerous disagreements with the London Company, owing to the subscription to a different political philosophy by its leaders, had determined to have the colony of Virginia for the crown. He used the fiction of colonial expansion to gain popular approval and bad administration on the part of those in control for his reason. William Evelyn Cameron was born in Petersburg, Virginia, November 29th. His father, Walker Anderson Cameron, was a cotton broker, descended from Sir Ewan Lochiei, the celebrated chief of Clan Cameron in Scotland.

Among Cameron's distinguished progenitors were Benjamin Harrison, who settled in Virginia in 1630, and was Secretary to the Colony; Sir Dudley Diggs, Master of the Rolla to King Charles l; Colonel William Byrd of Westover; and Edmund Jenings, deputy-governor of the colony from 1706 to 1710.

There has been considerable time spent in writing the life and accomplishments of Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson, although he had several children, never had a son. Therefore, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, the son of Martha Jefferson Randolph, was the most direct male descendant of the second President.

However, no one has made an attempt to write the biography of the grandson . It is particularly appropriate to write his life not only because of Thomas Jefferson Randolph's famous lineage but because he was an ardent adherent to the Democratic principles of his illustrious grandfather.

In the following study I have attempted to present a picture of Greek and Roman child life as it is represented in some Greek and Latin authors. Most of my material has been derived from well known authors such as Homer, Plato, Quintilian, etc. But there has been an attempt to enlarge my scope by consulting some other Greek and Latin authors easily available in the University of Richmond Library, the Richmond Public Library and the Virginia state Library. In my general discussion I have drawn freely on available works which would be helpful for elucidation and comparison.

From 1774 to 1824 Virginia played the most conspicuous role in creating and directing a union of democratic states. In 1861 there is the anomaly of the Old Dominion occupying the stellar position in an attempt to disrupt the confederation which was her hands-work. No amount of explanation as to economic interests, slavery, abolitionism or frustration seems in the last analysis, adequate in understanding this great transition. When reasonable arguments are exhausted and there is yet no central solution to the problem, there remains only the catholic element of change as a conclusion.

Claude Augustus Swanson was born at Swansonville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia on March 31, 1862. He is the son of John Muse Swanson and Catherine Pritchett. His father who was a merchant and tobacco manufacturer lost all his property in the panic of 1876. This caused Claude to have to stop his education at the age of fourteen and go to work on the farm. Coleridge is generally recognized as a highly imaginative poet. Students are too prone therefore to regard his poetry as directly the product of his active imagination. It is the object of this study to show instead that his poetry is based largely upon his actual experiences. The first railroad built in Virginia was chartered March 8, 1827. By the year 1860, there were 1,350 miles of railroad in Virginia. Among the first to be chartered was the Louisa Railroad from which the great Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad of today has its origin.
