This paper is an original one on the missionary life of Dr. Tarleton Perry Crawford, missionary of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Dr. Crawford was in China from 1852 to 1885 and stationed at the Shanghai and Tung Chow missions.
The source of material for this paper comes from the correspondence of Crawford with the Foreign Mission Board. These papers are found in the Depository of the Virginia Baptist Association, S.B.C. All facts in this paper were derived from these letters and reports. Any material gathered from other sources has been acknowledged by footnotes.

Newspapers are an invaluable index to a period and the personalized Virginia Gazettes are particularly revealing of the attitudes of the Colonial period. Although the advertisements for runaway slaves give more of the master's feeling for the slave than the life of the slave himself, it is hoped that the writer has sufficiently drawn forth the inferences toward this latter point to make all that is available clear. There are no copies of the Virginia Gazette between the years 1739/40 - 1744/45, and 1746 - 1766. This would make a great difference to a chronology of any kind, but the …

In this paper I shall make no attempt to treat any portion of the private life of Mr. Randolph. His family and domestic affairs will be ignored completely. Balthasar Hubmaier stands as one of the great unknowns of the Reformation. Only in the Baptist annals is he treated to any extent. Perhaps the reason lies in the fact that the Anabaptists were very much in the minority throughout the Reformation. They never had even a city which might be called Baptist, much less a nation. The problem presented in this paper is one that was first brought emphatically to my mind on a Wednesday night, four years ago. The pastor of a Baptist Church was discoursing upon the foreknowledge of God. "God knows everything we are going to do", he said, "but does not in any way interfere with our actions." It started me upon a long train of thought as to the relation between God and the free will and hence, between God and evil. The discussion that follows is the outcome of my research.

It was in the fall of 1781, over four years after the Declaration of Independence, that General Cornwallis surrendered his force at Yorktown, and American independence was realized. Yorktown is generally supposed to have been the decisive battle of the American Revolution, but it was the naval engagement off the Virginia Capes six weeks earlier, when the British fleet through a confusion over tactical signals, was driven away from the Chesapeake Bay, that actually decided the fate of the British forces in America.
