Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman was the Virginia-born editor of The Richmond News Leader from 1915 to 1949. He is also widely known as the author of several historical works--notably a biography of R.E. Lee for which he received the Pulitzer Prize in 1934, and a biography of George Washington which he had not quite finished at the time of his death in 1953.

While the direct influence of public opinion upon foreign policy can rarely be documented, there seems to be a general agreement that an "intimate" relationship does exist between the two. All the records of the early history of Hat Creek were destroyed in a very unfortunate fire in 1854. The first two volumes of the present records are kept in storage at the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. The third volume, covering the period from 1902 to 194o, will probably be sent there for safe storage in the very near future. Em­ ploying every available source, the writer has attempted to give a chronological account of the events surrounding Hat Creek from ifs founding in 1742, through the end of 1953.

The decision of the Pennsylvania Railroad Authorities to abandon the ferry service of the Elisha Lee, prior to the boats annual inspection by the United States Coast Guard in March, 1953, created a bit of excitement on the part of the Eastern Shore Inhabitants. This ferry service connected the Shore with Old Point Comfort and Norfolk, Virginia. The ferry made two trips a day across the Bay, carrying the mail, freight, cars, and passengers.
