In the preface to -De Doctrina Christiana John Milton makes it clear that his religious views underwent a continual process of revision throughout his lite, and he assures us that at no time during his life did he follow any heresy or sect. During the century and a half prior to the discovery of !!! DOctrina Christiana in 1823, however, Milton was regarded as one of the highest figures in English literature, passing as an orthodox Protestant of the Calvinistic faith.

The artistic development of William Morris (1834•1896), dictated by an extreme sensitiveness to color and craftsmanship is almost wholly contained in the first well-defined period of his life. Until 1877 Morris was principally concerned with poetry and the fine arts, and from that time he concentrated on combating the rise of drabness, the result of Victorian capitalism, and worked for the cause of social reform. However,despite the great variety of Morris' achievements a unity was maintained in his love of beauty for its own sake. The scope of this paper, then, is limited to the first period of his life. …

The first years of freedom were not calm ones for the people of the new Republic. This was as true in Virginia as elsewhere. in the State itself there was the ever present danger of slave insurrection and the Wars of the French Revolution which raged in Europe were in grave danger of spreading into this hemisphere. This situation caused the State to make provisions to secure four thousand stands of farms for its militia in 1796. This proved to be a very difficult task, for the European hostilities had seriously limited the amount of arms available.

In any argument that might arise concerning the question of who were the greatest gunfighters of all time, the qualifications of four men to this hallowed position will never be questioned. Indeed, the names of Billy the Kid (Henry McCarty), Wyatt Earp, John Henry "Doc" Holliday, and William Barclay "Bat" Masterson, have become symbols for the turbulent and lawless days of the 1870's and 1880's in the South­west. Taylor is a very popular name in American history. Tho original immigrant of the family followed in this story was John Taylor who came to the Virginia shore from England in 1650 with his two brothers, Arggle and William. He was about twenty three when he embarked from the Amsterdam and docked in Fleet 's Bay. Soon this immigrant settled in Wicomcio Parish in Northumberland County. His wife, the former Alice Gaskins, and he brought up a family of three sons and several daughters. Early in 1702, John died at the age of seventy-five.

"The wheel was the crowning achievement of prehistoric carpentry..." Since the discovery of the wheel and its part in revolutionizing transportation for the individual, it has been destined to play a leading role in transportation as an industry.

At the conclusion of the Civil War the era was marked by expansion in industry and agriculture. This expansion was possible through transportation. At the front was the railroad, but the horse and wagon method of transport was behind the scenes, playing an active role, and destined to rise to the front with the introduction of the combustion engine.

It has not been the intention of the writar to give a definitive biography of Hugh Blair Grigsby but only to relate his observations and participation in the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829-30.

The major portion ef the material collected in the preparation of this paper has been taken from the papers and diaries or Grigsby in the Virginia Historical Society. Much information also was gathered from the Virginia State Library, being derived largely from current newspapers during the time of the Convention.
