This research was a content analysis concerned with the stereotyping of animals in children's literature. Five hypotheses were formulated on the topic. These hypotheses examined the relationship between type of characterization (animal as animal, animal as animal but talking, animal as human being) and stereotyping. The relationship between role of character (major or minor) and stereotyping and the degree of stereotyping and realism, in general, prevalent in children's picture books. The animals picked for analysis were bears, foxes, mice and rabbits. The total population of books was taken from five sources and a stratified random sample was drawn. A total …

The present study was designed as a comparative analysis of the performer's empathic process in the arts of interpretation and modern dance. The similarity between the performer's empathic process in both arts provided a method for exploring the utility that modern dance offers the interpreter. It was the purpose of this thesis to suggest that training in modern dance provides an experience in expressive movement which develops the interpreter's ability to empathize with the literature.
The performer's experience in modern dance and interpretation involves an empathic response to stimuli presented within the choreography or within the literature. Examination of various …

It is not often that extended, authorial remarks introduce an individual volume of fiction. When they do they are more often self-serving than illuminative; inappreciable than noteworthy. As such they occasion no particular response in the reader save for a scant sense of relief once the obligation to read them is met, an unhappy situation: one is not obligated to read fiction, but once the book is opened, there they can be, the prolegomenous remarks, menacingly tucked between cover and content, piquing. Is it possible that someone possessed the attributes of a humanitarian and yet acted in such a way that those same characteristics were lost? Could an administrator deal with the plight of the unfortunate members of society and fail to recognize the causational factors of that plight? It would appear illogical to reason that the correct responses to the above questions could be in the affirmative, and yet the affirmative answers seemed to be applicable to the life and career of Herbert Hoover. The time-line ran from West Branch, Iowa, in 1874, ending in that same village in 1964.

For me the attainment of awareness or understanding through sensory perception (or the act of possessing quick and immediate insight into the dynamics of form and space) is fundamental for spontanous [sic] ideas. To achieve and/or express these feelings and ideas in sculpture requires an automatic and intuitive response. My sculpture is constructed directly and simply using found stock piled materials (wood, rope, glass, steel and sticks). No preplaning or sketching is used. It is the purpose of this thesis to assert subconscious patterns or subliminal patterns. The purpose of the study was to develop a list of criteria and a checklist from which to evaluate black biographies for self concept enhancement. The author hypothesized that such a checklist could be developed and used in evaluating black biographies. The checklist criteria were developed and used to evaluate forty black biographies, fifty percent of the biographies about blacks currently on the shelves of the McKinstry Junior High School media center. In using the checklist the author judged twenty percent of the books at borderline level for self-concept enhancement and seventeen percent unacceptable. The checklist seems to be a …

The purpose of this paper was to develop a means of identifying and categorizing violence in young adult novels. The professional literature reviewed helped to determine a working definition of violence and also provided insights for the researcher on how violence is categorized in the various medias by educators and socialogists. For this study the author identified two criteria to be examined in junior novels. These criteria originally came from Stephen Dunning's five categories which he suggested as representative criteria against which the literary quality of the junior novel could be measured. The two categories chosen were structure and characterization in the novel. Each aspect of these two categories was defined and then applied to twenty-one junior novels that were fiction. The twenty-one novels examined were chosen from G. Robert Carlsen's list of popular books depicting adolescent concerns in the 1977 and 1978 English Journal. Each book was then measured numerically …

The Northwood Public Library of Northwood, Iowa, was founded on January 29, 1907, with the first meeting of the Northwood Library Association. The library opened to its 109 subscribed members on April 26, 1907. On October 14, 1925, the Northwood Library became the Northwood Public Library. 3tate library officials assisted the Northwood Library's Board of Trustees with the planning for the operations of both the subscription and the public libraries.

In a number of books on visual fine art and design [1, 2], there is mention of the kinship between camouflage and painting, but no one has, to my knowledge, pursued it. I have intermittently researched this relationship for several years, and my initial observations have recently been published [3]. Now I have been awarded a faculty research grant from the Graduate School of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to pursue this subject in depth. I am, therefore, collecting documents and personal accounts pertaining to historical and theoretical connections of the kind that are listed below.
