This study was undertaken for the specific purpose of developing criteria for good historical fiction, applying the resulting criteria statements to each of the books that make up the "Little House" series, and determining the frequency of criteria appearance in each book separately and as a series. The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a criteria list to each of the books in the "Little House" series point by point.

This survey of children's literature was undertaken to determine if a collection of 150 books meeting a fantasy genre definition could be developed as a basis for a mini-course for Edison Middle School students in Waterloo, Iowa. For this study, fantasy genre literature was defined as the literature of fantastic tales and chimerical tales, having been created by an author and having a world of wonders. Living toys, strange children, witches, supernatural animal figures, mythical worlds, combat between good and evil, journeys through time and space, and the "door" were identified as fantasy genre motifs.

In the study, "Marshalltown Library Service; A History of the First Fifty Years, 1860-1910," the researcher traced Marshalltown's library service provided during three time spans. The Roman conquest of the eastern Mediterranean (264-100 B.C.) was one of the more important events in Roman history. The expansion of Carthage had been brought to a halt when the genius of the Roman general Scipio enabled the Romans to defeat the Carthaginians decisively on their own ground, at Zama in North Africa. With Carthage subdued, Rome set out systematically forestalling the rise of any potentially dangerous rival in Greece or the Near East. The title of my Studio Thesis is Ascetic Progression. My paintings reflect asceticism because they involve a solitary, personal search. The search leads to the unknown, as in a silent, tidal progression. I do not want to paint the things that I know. I may use a certain type of imagery or structure repeatedly as one uses the same language in new composition to express new thought. I am painting blindly in a way. Participation theatre provides a creative and valuable experience for the primary school child. The attitude and involvement of the classroom teacher can hinder or enhance this experience for the child. The purpose of this study is to describe: A. a five-step process by which a children's theatre company can insure a positive teacher attitude during performance and stimulate the teacher to provide creative follow-up activities in the classroom; and B. the implementation of this process by The Tiddly Winks Players during a pilot project in four Waterloo, Iowa, elementary schools in the spring semester of 1980. The study of mirrored and reflective surfaces has been a fascination of mine for several years. It began with a curiosity in the reflected image from the traditional wall mirror and other mirrored and reflective surfaces. My earliest graduate research concentrated on the illustration of reflected images on a two-dimensional surface. As my work progressed, however, the discovery of new media such as mirrored plexiglass and reflective paints allowed me greater flexibility and introduced the possibility of distorting the perceived mirrored image. Juvenile literature is an effective and appealing tool to supplement classroom instruction. More specifically, historical fiction can provide supplemental readings to enhance and enrich an American Studies Course.
The purpose of this study was to determine if an annotated bibliography of historical fiction relating to the Civil War era could be developed. The novels to be included were to be of an interest level including grade eight and a reading level range of grades four through eleven. Major social/cultural, political/legal, and economic issues of the Civil War era were attributed to each title in the bibliography.

The primary purpose of this thesis was to investigate Richard N. Current's interpretation of the United States' response during the Manchurian Crisis of 1931-1932. The socalled "crisis" broke out in September when the Japanese used an explosion along the South Manchurian Railway at Mukden as an excuse to occupy that city and to move against other cities in Manchuria. The crisis continued into 1932 with the League of Nations failing to take any more effective action than to appoint a neutral commission to investigate the problems in Manchuria between the two belligerents-China and Japan. The report of a study conducted in the fall of the 1978-79 school year by the elementary media specialist at Hudson, Iowa Elementary School to determine what literary characteristics were found in books which were currently popular with the Hudson fourth and fifth grade students. The literature reviewed discussed the criteria of literary quality developed by other authors. A set of ten criteria with which to judge literary quality was developed by the researcher. The major purposes of this research were to analyze the portrayal of emotionally disturbed characters in books which adolescents are reading and to attempt to determine if this portrayal was realistic and balanced in terms of the entire group of books. A panel of experts was used to obtain a sample of ten books. The portrayals of twelve characters from these ten books were analyzed using an inventory of twelve elements which were derived from traditional stereotypes of the emotionally disturbed. The results of this analysis suggested that, for the most part, a realistic and generally balanced portrayal of emotionally …
