One of the most attractive figures in Spanish literature is that of Don Juan, whose legendary role is to satisfy his carnal appetites, to deceive women and to mock the dead. Beginning with the Burlador de Sevilla, in which Tirso de Molina makes a universal myth of Don Juan, this thesis attempts to trace his evolution through select works of the Generation of '98. The Romantic Jose Zorrilla, in his Don Juan Tenorio, begins a process of humanization, with the consequent demythifying of the character, when his Don Juan falls in love with Ines. Dyarchy was the outcome of a long struggle between 1909 and 1919. The nationalists. and the imperialists all have contributed to its shaping. This is what I propose here. Specifically, my focus is upon the events in India, and more specifically, on how World War I changed the imperialists' and the nationalists' attitudes, and precipitated a process of change in the administrative system of India. All the experiences and impressions of artists affect their work. Experiences gained by experimentation with media, environmental changes and intelligent visual growth often dictate the mode of communication. Part of my experiences have been the influence of the color, structure, and rythmic [sic] line in Indian cave frescoes. These frescoes, depicting scenes from the Jatak Tales, create an emotional and psychological impact; their sensuous movements breathe something of the warmth found in the Indian air. The views of Henry A. Wallace with respect to China underwent a number of changes through the years. One constant theme ran throughout all of his references to the "Middle Kingdom," however--the importance of that nation to world peace and prosperity. Wallace publicly affirmed his support for the Chinese Nationalist Government during his diplomatic mission to Soviet Asia in 1944, but in a private report to President Roosevelt confided his true criticisms of and fears for Chiang's regime. He termed the present Kuomintang leadership "reactionary," and called upon the United States to be ready to shift its support if a …

The work in the thesis show, a series of colored grids on a gray ground began in the fall of 1977. An exploration of color and perception is of primary importance to the series. The grid is of secondary importance and was chosen to eliminate any design elements which might hinder the intended perceptual experience.

Studies have found that minorities have been portrayed in a stereotyped image in children's picture books. Since the elderly have been considered a minority group, this study examined the portrayal of the elderly in picture books to determine if a stereotyped image is present. Content analysis was performed on thirty-three books. A worksheet was devised which contained the four main categories main character, function or role, physical appearance, and personality descriptors. Sub-categories for each main category were also provided on the worksheet. Frequency of occurrence for each category or sub-category was then recorded on the worksheet. After the analysis was …

This study was designed to determine how Asian Americans have been characterized in children's fiction. The questions investigated were: (1) what are the identifiable physical, social and personality stereotypes attributed to Asian Americans, (2) how have characterizations of Asian Americans changed between the periods 1945-1965 and 1966-1976, and (3) how have Asian American authors and illustrators characterized Asian Americans as compared with non-Asian American authors and illustrators. The time periods were chosen to test the impact of the Civil Rights Movement and the growing consciousness of the importance of ethnicity.

"Look to the Forms" examines and establishes the common themes of four of Norman Mailer's non-fiction books: Advertisements for Myself, The Presidential Papers, Cannibals and Christians and The Armies of the Night. In these books Mailer writes of phenomena following World War II and evolves a system of metaphysics, philosophy and sociology which is existential. The whole system rests on an existential metaphysics which finally requires an existential view of life, society and art. This thesis, An Analysis of the Concept of the Divine Right of Kings in the Political Works of James I, is a study of the theory of the divine right of kings as formulated by James Stuart (1566-1625). As King James VI of Scotland, and later as King James I of England, he was both a practitioner of kingship and a political theoretician. The thesis evaluates his theory of divine right in the context of western political thought. Henry Fielding was greatly interested in the literary works of Cervantes. This interest is reflected in Fielding's writing, especially character development and, to some extent, in his style. There are obvious similarities in thematic content in the dialogues between Tom Jones and Partridge and between Don Quijote and Sancho. There are also obvious similarities in episodes or situations involving these major characters, which are presented and discussed in this thesis.
