A Survey Of Pedagogical Techniques For The College Jazz Program, Eric D. Allen

The primary purpose of this paper is to serve as a summation for most of the course work and activities involved with the Master of Music in Jazz Pedagogy degree. This paper will examine various aspects of teaching jazz at the college level as well as examine common practice jazz repertoire from the performer's standpoint. The pieces featured on the corequisite jazz pedagogy recital, all of which were chosen because of their instructional value, will serve as the primary examples for discussion.

Metaphors of Memory is an installation of objects created during my studies in the Master of Arts program at the University of Northern Iowa from August 1995 to December 1996. The work was exhibited at Kamerick Art Gallery at the University of Northern Iowa on December 13-20, 1996. The installation summarizes and objectifies my observations and reflections on sociocultural phenomena arising from memory loss due to Alzheimer's Disease. Music composition in the twentieth century is an eclectic discipline. For the past one hundred years composers have employed a vast array of techniques to express their music, more so than in any other era in history. No universally accepted "common practice" exists for the contemporary writer. Although certain aesthetic considerations regarding style, form, and content are pondered by the composer, their applications vary widely. The composer is compelled to create not only a cohesive piece of music, but also define the very compositional parameters that are to be used-and these parameters quite often are different for every composition. In 1954 the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education ruling nullified the Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) doctrine of "separate but equal." At the time, a racially dysfunctional America looked to the South to observe the results of the Court's sweeping statement. Few realized that, carried to its logical conclusion, the decision would necessarily bring into question the racial practices of every part of the nation. To the dismay of Northerners, blacks began to challenge the unofficial system of segregation which existed outside of the South. This study identified new music education resources in CD-Rom, videodisc, and computer software formats created from 1990-1995. Each item was evaluated according to its effectiveness in meeting the three different domains of learning; affective, cognitive, and psychomotor. The study also identified items that exhibited multicultural diversity. The resulting annotated bibliography lists twenty-two resources with critical evaluations of use to music teachers and library media specialists.

This abstract will discuss the literature performed during the Graduate Recital in Voice of Christine Bergan, given on Tuesday, April 16, 1996. The selections are from many historical periods of music composition, from Baroque to Twentieth-Century, from Scarlatti to Menotti, and contain quite a variety of representative styles in between these two extremes. This abstract will include information about the composers represented, some of their general compositional stylistic traits, and a discussion of the specific pieces performed.

Award-winning playwright David Mamet has acknowledged numerous times his indebtedness to the socio-economic theories of turn-of-the-century economist Thorstein Veblen, whom Mamet credits as influencing the motivation of the characters in several of his plays set in work-related environments.

Veblen, who was largely influenced by Darwin and Freud, declared that the economic institution of capitalism encourages an instinctive "predatory animus" in man to surface due to capitalism's encouragement of the ownership of private property. Veblen asserted that the desire for private property goes beyond one's essential physiological needs and is driven instead by the psychological drive to improve one's self-esteem and …

This project was to produce a bibliography of historical fiction requested by teachers in Johnston Middle School, Johnston, Iowa, that can be used by the eighth-grade classes so that students may choose from a selected list of historical fiction books about the American West that will encompass both their literature theme of the will to survive and the historical setting of the American frontier as it moves West between 1840 and 1899. Portrayal Of Homelessness In Children’S And Young Adult Fiction, Susan J. Myers

The purpose of this study was to compare the portrayal of homelessness in children's and young adult fiction books to the findings in known research. This study was a content analysis using a checklist to record the presence of individual characteristics, family background traits, and diversity among the homeless leading characters in each selected book. The portrayal of the homeless leading characters was found to be consistent with known research in the areas of individual characteristics and family backgrounds. The Portrayal Of Abandonment By Mothers In Young Adult Literature, Bernie M. Hawley

This study used content analysis of a selected sample of 33 young adult fiction books published between 1980-1995, to determine if the portrayal of abandonment of children by their mothers is realistic according to social research of those populations. Findings indicate that in a majority of the titles the abandonment is caused by the mother's need to establish her own identity and the abandoned child(ren)'s reactions are characterized by negative behaviors. These findings support the premise that contemporary young adult fiction presents mother abandonment in a realistic manner. It was found, however, that the majority of mothers in these books …

The primary purpose of this paper is to serve as a capstone for the course work and activities involved with the Master of Music in Jazz Pedagogy degree. This paper will examine instructional methods and strategies to be utilized in both classroom and rehearsal settings at the secondary level. A variety of modeling and demonstration techniques will be explored, specifically in the areas of improvisation, interpretation of jazz style (based primarily on this author's aural and written research in jazz history), and rhythm section techniques. The Moral Reasoning Of Males And Females In Response To Hypothetical Dilemmas Involving The Care Of Elderly Family Members, Denise Litterer

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Twenty Midwestern Caucasian college students, ten males and ten females, were tested on justice and care orientations when reasoning about hypothetical moral dilemmas involving the care of elderly family members. A slightly modified version of the dilemma developed in Stack's (1990) study was used along with a new dilemma developed by the author of this study to further clarify the coding process. Lyons' (1983) scoring method and Gilligan's (1982) guidelines were used to code subjects' responses. No sex differences in the type of moral reasoning were found. The results of this study did not support Gilligan's theory that there are …
