Hamann discusses his family’s views of the military when he was growing up in Lewiston, volunteering for the Air Force when it became clear he would likely be drafted, learning that he was to be deployed because he could speak French, survival, and POW training, meeting other Mainers at Hau Bon Royal Thai Air Force Base, and his experiences being stationed in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
