The collection contains records of the Katahdin Iron Works, an iron producing company located near Brownville Junction, Maine. It also includes records of Piscataquis Iron Works, a successor to Katahdin, and records generated by Prentiss and Carlisle Company of Bangor while managing the timberland on the Iron Works property.

The collection reflects the business and civic activities of both Amos A. and Octavia Moulton Graffte. It is arranged in one series with three sub-series: Papers of Amos A. Graffte, Papers of Octavia Moulton Graffte and Papers of the Graffte Family. The collection is enriched by notes of explanation added to most items by the Grafftes' daughter, Marjorie Graffte Prout, the donor of the collection.

The collection contains 47 letters from members of the Brown family written primarily between 1860 and 1875. The letters are arranged chronologically. Most were written by Josiah S. Brown and Zachariah B. Brown, Jr. to their father and their five brothers in Burton, New Brunswick. Several of Josiah's letters describe his experiences in the Civil War, his reaction to the death of Abraham Lincoln, and his migration to the West after being mustered out of the Army. Letters written by Eliab Murdock to his wife Sarah Murdock while serving with Company F of the 17th Maine Infantry Regiment and the Veteran Reserve Corps during the Civil War. Also includes letters written by Sarah Murdock to her husband as well as a few written to Murdock by his daughter Pauline and his brother James; letters of recommendation and reference, 1841-1844, for Murdock; and his military discharge papers and military pension documents.

Daphne Merrill was born in Rockland, Maine. She received her B.A. from UMaine in 1927 and M.A. in 1937. She was a teacher of English in secondary schools and a professor of English at UMaine, Auburn. She is author of three books and past President of the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women.

The collection is composed of research notes, scrapbooks and manuscripts for Ms. Merrill's book on Maine lakes, and some other papers concerning the American Mothers Committee, Toy Len Goon, Mother of the Year, 1953 and class materials for teaching English.

Broadside signed by residents of Pittston, Maine, arguing for the separation of the District of Maine from Massachusetts and suggesting that the legislature authorize a convention of delegates from all towns in the district "to declare the sense of their constituents, to frame a constitution ... and to do and transact all things ... necessary to the ... establishment of a separate and independent state."
