This small collection consists almost entirely of correspondence written to Rachel Lowe, 1917-1959, from various collectors and experts in the study and identification of mosses. The letters are arranged in chronological order although there is some evidence from the collection that Mrs. Lowe may have kept at least part of her correspondence together by correspondent. Envelopes have been kept in most cases because Mrs. Lowe often made notes on them.

Most letters concern identification of specimens collected by Mrs. Lowe. Frequent correspondents were associated with the University of Pennsylvania Botanical Laboratory, the New York Botanical Garden, DePaux University, the University …

The records consist primarily of correspondence and legal documents of the company, 1878-1882. The correspondence is mainly between Charles Stetson, a Bangor attorney and one of the directors of the company, and William L. Putnam, a Portland attorney prominent as counsel for various railroads. It concerns difficulties encountered in the finances of the company and concentrates on several suits against it, especially those brought by John Greenough, Foster Edwards and Lysander Stone, and Marcus P. Norton. Correspondence with the Boston law firm of Warren & Brandeis involving these cases is also found in the collection.

The collection contains notes and information on the Perkins family gathered and compiled from around 1911 to 1913 by Enoch Perkins of Malden, Massachusetts. They are arranged in numerical order by order number and seem to be from three different orders. Within each order number, the forms are arranged by section, course and number. Information on each form includes order number, cutter's name, hours spent in cutting, cost of the work, dimensions of the block, and a design drawing of each block.

The journal, 1853-1860, is a daybook recording freight charges primarily for lumber and laths. Individuals and companies mentioned frequently include S.W. Pope and Co., William. E. Pennell, John F. Harmon, Humphrey Desmond, and James Miller.

The journal, 1857-1868, records financial information about stumpage, labor, wood sold, and general bills paid by the Whitneyville Agency.

The ledger, 1857-1885, lists accounts held by various people and companies, with expenditures and credits for lumber, groceries, equipment, labor, etc.
