The aim of this thesis is to determine whether John 11:27 reflects an early Christian creed or, as an exclamation from Martha, served in the early Church as a creed. In his otherwise excellent chapter “Creedal Elements in the New Testament” in Early Christian Creeds, J. N. D. Kelly does not list John 11:27 as “evidence in the New Testament to show that the faith was already beginning to harden into conventional summaries. This seems an unfortunate omission since Martha’s confession contains not only one of two, but three Christological affirmations joined together asyndetically.

The conclusion of this study is that Fundamentalism and the Missouri Synod were not related closely enough for either to exert major influence upon the other. Basic factors in the background of each group kept them at a distance from one another, and, while their paths were often parallel, they never actually converged. This thesis is primarily concerned with the criteria for the structuring of adult pre-membership instruction, in the light of its unique position within the field of Christian education. The broad area of Christian education has the problem of teaching individuals who exhibit relative degrees of faith and knowledge. Functionally, most of Christian education is based upon the assumption that a common denominator of faith is present, no matter how minimal it may be. Since adult pre-membership instruction can make no such assumption, it follows that the whole philosophy of Christian education must be re-examined in the light of pre-membership instruction.
