As the old year passed into the new, the Lord of the Church called two men associated with Concordia Seminary to their heavenly home. The one was 85-year-old Theodore F. K. Laetsch, a member of the faculty from 1927 until his retirement in 1948. He died in Sheboygan, Wis., on Dec. 29. The other was 37-year-old Henry W. Reimann, who departed this life after a brief severe illness on Jan. 6. Prof. Reimann had been a member of the seminary faculty since 1955.

In Europe as well as in the U.S. A. the question concerning the nature of the church is as much alive as the question concerning the nature of the Gospel Fundamentally one's ideas about the church are determined by one's position toward the Gospel. In the United States the Reformed theologians are concerning themselves with the question of the church from two points of view: the theological and the practical. As to the theological aspect of the question, the Reformed bodies offer a variety of answers, among which three stand out.

Pastors are sometimes dismayed at the multiplicity of their duties. The burden lies not in their number but in the difficulty with which many of them seem to relate to the ministry of the Word and the one thing needful. The task which threatens this relevance most seriously is the fostering of Christian giving, or as it is called secularly, fund raising. The effort to supply Christian motivation through familiar terms like "stewardship" and "liberality" becomes wearing to pastors and people the kingdom of God, or of the Holy Spirit alike. Yet the need of "raising money" does not slacken.

The interpretation of this impassioned verse from an impassioned epistle has for some time ceased to be a problem for commentators. "New evidence," reported by George Milligan in 1923, came by way of a 17-century-old scrap of papyrus. It told of the parents of a wayward son who notified the governor that they would no longer be responsible for the son's debts and asked that a public announcement to this effect be "placarded up" (πϱογϱαφῆναι) where all might read it.
