"God, Syria, freedom, and that is all." These four words embody the goals of the Syrian Revolution. Yet, there is one key element of this chant that raises questions surrounding its meaning: freedom. For decades, the people of Syria have been subjected to restricted freedom by the Assad regime-especialIy musicalIy. The regime has artfulIy used music to legitimize its claim to the country. The stage offers a unique lens through which to explore the reality of human existence on Earth, sharing the behaviors of characters in imagined circumstances with audiences. In the earliest works of literature, authors discuss the implications and qualities of human fallacy. Studying the works of The Bible, Agamemnon by Aeschylus, and The Odyssey by Homer, one can see this concept through the actions of characters. In particular, Samson, Agamemnon, and Odysseus portray the fall, recognition, and redemption of mankind. In the case of Samson, Yahweh has established the covenant of the Nazarene with him. However, he falls and breaks the covenant. Through a painful series of events, Samson eventually recognizes his faults but does not redeem himself before his tragic death. Significant movements require serious motivations from those involved. During the Civil Rights Movement, those involved in Freedom Summer of 1964 risked their lives and comfort to advance the Movement. Freedom Summer Freedom School teachers had unique motivations; some motivations were shared amongst the teachers, while others were individual. Although it is difficult to fully understand the motivations of Freedom School teachers, this paper identifies three overarching motivations that were shared amongst the teachers: an understanding that African Americans in the South were denied equality in education, the belief that the curriculum of Freedom Schools would address this educational inequality, and …

In modern American society, midwives are relatively uncommon since most mothers choose the medical model of childbirth which places importance on physicians and medicine to assist childbirth. Recent medical advances contributed to the medicalization of childbirth, but how were children born in historical eras without medical technology? A focus on Ancient Rome provides one of the earliest example of medicine in childbirth. Ancient texts written during the Roman Empire demonstrate an interest in women's reproductive health as seen through Soranus' Gynecology and Pliny the Elder's Historia Naturalis. These two scientific texts offer different accounts of childbirth which guides my research. …

LGBTQ Jews are collectively an underrepresented population, and their identification with two minority groups exposes this group of individuals to a great deal of potential hardships. Jewish culture, the largely secular LGBTQ community, and the ever-present gaze of heteronormative Christian society at large unfortunately have the ability to permutate and coalesce in a myriad of destructive ways at the expense of LGBTQ Jews. Critics of Christianity in India have frequently accused Christianity of being a predatory, imperialistic religion with absolutist tendencies, and have framed Christian evangelism as an aggressive, uncouth act. More recently, however, and in an idiom that resonates with many contemporary Indians, Swami Dayananda Saraswati (1930-) has made the more controversial claim that the attempt to convert another person is itself an act of violence. In three parts, the paper 1) describes Dayananda’s claims, while bringing them into conversation with the arguments of earlier critics of Christianity (e.g., Mahatma Gandhi, Sita Ram Goel, Ashok Chowgule, Arun Shourie), 2) analyzes and critique …

In the very darkest corner, behind the davenport, there sat a little ice cube. Tears were dripping slowly, monotonously, hopelessly from its block-shaped face. The eerie moonlight peeped around the deserted room and revealed the most pitiful expression one could ever witness en the face of an ice cube. And the reason? The little ice cube was dying. Some careless reveler had flipped it out of a glass in one horrifying fling, and there it lay, in a state of inertia, awaiting the hideous death of an ice cube. Slowly, atom by atom, it was disappearing.

For a brilliant satire on humanity, I can think of no better author to turn to than Aldous Huxley. His rhetoric is flawless, his characters unbelievably typical, and his satire tinged with just the right amount of reality to render it plausible. Born in England, Mr. Huxley has no more mercy on his own countrymen than he has on those of other nationalities. His satire is universal and completely nonpartisan.
