Dmitri Shostakovich, Lady Macbeth, And The Soviet Government, Bianca Nicole Dudeck-Wiseman Apr 1998

Dmitri Shostakovich, Lady Macbeth, And The Soviet Government, Bianca Nicole Dudeck-Wiseman

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Dmitri Shostakovich's opera, Lady Macbeth of Misenk, has suffered through more social changes than any other work in Russian music history. It brought Shostakovich unprecedented fame, and also brought about his downfall by the Soviet Government The story behind Shostakovich, Lady Macbeth, and the Soviet Government is one of power, as well as the evolution of a nation and how it affected the struggling individual. Here, the artist, his art, the government, and the people are all inextricably linked.

Monarchist Clubs And The Pamphlet Debate Over Political Legitimacy In The Early Years Of The French Revolution, Paul R, Hanson Jan 1998

Monarchist Clubs And The Pamphlet Debate Over Political Legitimacy In The Early Years Of The French Revolution, Paul R, Hanson

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

On the morning of 14 December 1790, an angry crowd surrounded the royal prison in Aix en-Provence and forced the release of the marquis de la Roquette and the avocat au parlement Jean Joseph Pascalis. Led by militant members of the Club des anti-politiques, a radical club in Aix composed largely of artisans, the crowd escorted the two men through the streets of Aix to the elegant Cours Mirabeau, where each was hanged by a rope from a street lantern. Later that day the same fate befell Andre-Raymond Guiramand, an elderly chevalier of St. Louis who in recent days had …

Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves Jan 1998

Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

By comparing the papers produced by the laboratory teams of Robert Gallo and Jean Luc Montagnier during the AIDS virus hunt, we have an opportunity to discern the fine line between a bold, explicit rhetoric that may convince as well as offend and a bald, reserved rhetoric that may actually conceal important implications. Going too far in either direction may create misunderstandings and ethical dilemmas as will be demonstrated in a textual analysis deepened by an exploration of historical context and interviews with key participants. Since a public health crisis calls upon communication that thwarts misunderstandings, scientists should understand the …

Immigrants From India In North America And Hindu-Christian Study And Dialogue, Raymond B. Williams Jan 1998

Immigrants From India In North America And Hindu-Christian Study And Dialogue, Raymond B. Williams

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Two premises are behind this essay of reflections on the experience of immigrants from India as potential participants in Hindu-Christian study and dialogue: First, potential Hindu conversation partners are no longer "over there"; rather, they are in North America. A new form of transnational Hinduism is developing that raises the question about what location (geographical and social) is best for collaborative study and dialogue to take place. Second, in the early days of establishing Hinduism in North America by immigrants, very little dialogue has taken place. Several reflections on that relative silence might provide some understanding that could provide a …

Viewpoint: On Being Hindu-Christian, Tinu Ruparell Jan 1998

Viewpoint: On Being Hindu-Christian, Tinu Ruparell

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Teaching courses in religious studies, I am often asked whether I myself profess allegiance to some faith tradition - that is whether I am myself a "believer" of some kind. I must confess that I get some mischievous pleasure in responding that I am a "Hindu-Christian". The answer usually gets one of two kinds of responses: either my questioner is somewhat intrigues, in which case we might have an interesting discussion; or they smile with polite indifference and promptly change the topic. Both of these kinds of responses, however, can betray that my answer has called something into question: the …

The Utopian Mayeux: Henri De Saint-Simon Meets The Bossu A La Mode, Elizabeth Mix Jan 1998

The Utopian Mayeux: Henri De Saint-Simon Meets The Bossu A La Mode, Elizabeth Mix

Scholarship and Professional Work – Arts

MonsieurMayeux was a fictional hunchback dwarf found in visual and literary media during and after the period of the July Monarchy (1830-1848) in France. Many artists, among them Honoré Daumier, and writers, including Victor Hugo and Alfred de Musset, popularized the hunchback. Mayeux was a unique "type " capable ofaddressing a diverse public on several simultaneous levels. The ambiguities inherent in his physical and psychological characteristics aided individuals who "used" him to sell a product or advocate a political position. With Saint-Simonism we can witness Mayeux being used to address both sides of the same argument. Although he was an …

A Rebellious Son? Hugo Odeberg And The Interpretation Of John 5.18, James F. Mcgrath Jan 1998

A Rebellious Son? Hugo Odeberg And The Interpretation Of John 5.18, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A solution to the difficult question of how to interpret John 5.18 appeared to have been provided with the publication of Hugo Odeberg's monumental work, The Fourth Gospel, published in 1929. Odeberg cited a rabbinic expression which characterized a rebellious son as one who 'makes himself equal with his father, and thus suggested that 'the Jews' are here making a similar accusation: they regard Jesus as rebelling against the divine authority. Subsequent scholarship for a long time cited Odeberg as a definitive demonstration of the background and meaning of John 5.18, and thus of the entire passage.

Galdós's Segunda Manera: Rhetorical Strategies And Affective Response, Linda M. Willem Jan 1998

Galdós's Segunda Manera: Rhetorical Strategies And Affective Response, Linda M. Willem

Butler University Books

This book explores the change that occurred in the writings of Spanish novelist Benito Pérez Galdós when he entered his segunda manera in 1881 with the publication of La desberedada, his first contemporary novel. By studying his novels in light of how their stories are told, Linda Willem shows that La desberedada marks the beginning of a more sophisticated and varied mode of narrative presentation in Galdós's work. Through close readings of his first seven contemporary novels, Willem shows how the affective response associated with various narrative devices plays a role in the rhetorical strategies of each text.

The Diary Of Calvin Fletcher And The Historians, George W. Geib Jan 1998

The Diary Of Calvin Fletcher And The Historians, George W. Geib

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

While we all make New Year's resolutions, few of us ever keep them with the tenacity that Calvin Fletcher kept the one he apparently made on this day. The diary that he had begun in fragmentary fashion in 1817 and continued intermittently to 1829, he maintained religiously thereafter. In so doing, he provided us with an extraordinary record of his life and times. Published in nine volumes by the Indiana Historical Society from 1972 to 1983, The Diary of Calvin Fletcher represents perhaps the single most important printed source for understanding Indiana's history. In commemoration of Fletcher's two-hundredth birthday on …
