Real Lies, White Lies And Gray Lies: Towards A Typology Of Deception, Erin M. Bryant Oct 2008

Real Lies, White Lies And Gray Lies: Towards A Typology Of Deception, Erin M. Bryant

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

Despite its aversive label, deception is an extremely common social behavior that the average person performs on a daily basis (Camden, Motley, & Wilson, 1984; DePaulo, Kashy, Kirkendol, Wyer, & Epstein, 1996; Turner, Edgley, & Omstead, 1975). In fact, the use of white lies is so widespread they are often viewed as a form of communication competency that is necessary to successfully negotiate social interactions (Camden et al, 1984; Di Battista, 1994; Knapp & Comedena, 1975; Knapp, Hart, & Dennis, 1974). This study aimed to explore how college students perceive white lies and differentiate them from other types of lies …

...And Scene: A Guide To Locating Fight Scenes, T. Fulton Burns

Theatre Faculty Research

It is one of the most daunting tasks: trying to find a strong fight scene for a Skills Proficiency Test or even a class project. The truth of the matter is that your main focus is to pass your skills test while hopefully leaving an impression on your peers(especially the adjudicator!). Passing, and hopefully receiving an Examiner’s Award for Excellence, is the best result; or if you are at a National Stage Combat Workshop, you could possibly receive a Certificate for Best Actress or Actor. At the very heart of the issue, you need a scene that will work for …

The Reflection Of The Wastelands Of Waiting For Godot And Endgame In Electronic Media, Anya M. Cronin Aug 2008

The Reflection Of The Wastelands Of Waiting For Godot And Endgame In Electronic Media, Anya M. Cronin

Theses and Dissertations

The Reflection of the Wastelands of Waiting for Godot and Endgame in Electronic Media is a study of the wasteland settings of Waiting for Godot, Endgame, and the Internet according to the method of play analysis established by Bruce McConachie in American Theatre in the Culture of the Cold War: Producing and Contesting Containment, 1947- 1962. Chapter One establishes my justification, methodology, structure, and survey of literature. Chapters Two-Four explore isolation and language, magic, and death in regard to Godot, Endgame, and the Internet, respectively. Chapter Four also briefly concludes the work. This thesis invites …

Rhetoric With Humor: An Analysis Of Hispanic/Latino Comedians' Uses Of Humor, George Pacheco Jr. Aug 2008

Rhetoric With Humor: An Analysis Of Hispanic/Latino Comedians' Uses Of Humor, George Pacheco Jr.

Dissertations

Hispanic/Latino comedians' use of humor as argument is a rich environment to study. The relationship between the comedian (as the joke teller) and the audience (as the receivers of the joke) creates an environment where many topical boundaries fall, and the comedian is free to express him/herself without fear of persecution or ridicule. More specifically, this setting allows the comedian to use the platform as joke teller to communicate arguments to the audience through humor. Comedians who use humor rhetorically often communicate arguments about well-known stereotypes freely because audiences attend shows expecting to laugh.

Using Kenneth Burke's (1959) perspective by …

Dropping Knowledge And Breaking Barriers: My First Year Teaching At John Marshall High School, Jeffrey Cole Aug 2008

Dropping Knowledge And Breaking Barriers: My First Year Teaching At John Marshall High School, Jeffrey Cole

Theses and Dissertations

The following thesis draws from my experiences during my first year teaching at an inner city public school, John Marshall High School, from September 2007 to June 2008. It details apprehensions, conflicts, adjustments and corrections, both in my instructional method and personal interaction with students. I seek to illustrate mistakes and insights any first-year teacher might experience, as well as synthesize my own impressions regarding my evolving teaching philosophy.
