La Censura Teatral Bajo El Franquismo: La Vicesecretaría De Educación Popular (1941-1945), Emeterio Diez
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies
At the beginning of September 1938, nine days after its premiere at the Teatro Español and in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, the theatre performance Ak and Mankind, written originally by Halma …

El Teatro Universitario Durante Los Años 50: La Presencia De José Martín Recuerda Dentro Del Teu De Granada, Antonio César Morón Espinosa
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Theoretical proposal about the genesis of censorship in contemporary society, relating the SELF and its conflict with the surrounding environment which proscribes the desires of the free citizen. Starting with the study of censorship practices under …

Ibsen’S Female Characters In Captivity: An Exploration Of Literature And Performance, Christina K. Forshey
Ibsen’S Female Characters In Captivity: An Exploration Of Literature And Performance, Christina K. Forshey
Senior Honors Theses
In Henrik Ibsen’s plays, A Doll’s House, The Wild Duck, The Lady from the Sea, and Hedda Gabler, the theme of captivity is demonstrated in the female protagonists Nora, Hedvig, Ellida, and Hedda. The theme of captivity also serves as a performance guide for the portrayal of these characters. Ibsen’s female protagonists are in bondage to an object or person that manipulates the character’s mental and emotional senses. The character’s inner captivity reaches a climax where a decision must be made to abolish the chains of captivity or forever remain enslaved. Since the nineteenth century, the actor has greatly benefitted …

Fighting The Elements: Determining The Best Scenes For Skills Proficiency Tests, T. Fulton Burns
Fighting The Elements: Determining The Best Scenes For Skills Proficiency Tests, T. Fulton Burns
Theatre Faculty Research
In the last edition of The Cutting Edge I provided tips for locating fight-specific scenes. Now let’s narrow our search from the vast quantity of scenes to a playing field of only the best quality. For a Skills Proficiency Test (SPT), choreography comes first to ensure that the proper techniques are included within the fight. Following these lessons in technique and choreography, the scene selection process begins. In a traditional acting class, the scene selection occurs first and is followed by the explored action. So even though the cart may be before the horse, as it were, with an SPT, …

University of Minnesota, Morris production Our Town by Thornton Wilder and directed by Ray Schultz.
Synopsis: A landmark in American drama, Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Our Town tells the story of a small town, Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, in order to tell us the story of every town, the whole world over. Narrated by the “Stage Manager”, we follow the Gibbs and Webb families, residents of Grover’s Corners, through twelve years of life changes -- from the mundane in Act I, “Daily Life,” to the romantic in Act II, “Love and Marriage,” to the devastating in Act III, “Death and …

Body Image Of Dancers In Los Angeles: The Cult Of Slenderness And Media Influence Among Dance Students, Teresa Heiland, Darrin S. Murray, Paige P. Edley
Dance Faculty Works
Body image and self-esteem are examined through personal stories among Los Angeles college dancers who grew up in the Hollywood culture of the cult of slenderness. The study incorporates a body image survey, eating disorder screen, and an interview process capturing dancers’ lived experiences with daily pressures. Dancers reveal their experiences with body image struggles and empowerment. Quantitative and qualitative results point to a need for future social activist intervention with dancers in their formative years when body image concepts are formed. At this time of need and rebellion, the dance community could support change by increasing focus on wellness …
