Motivos Y Estrategias En El Teatro De Angélica Liddell, Jesús Eguía Armenteros
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies
This piece analyzes the works of Angelica Liddell from the perspective of the Theory of Motives and Strategies. The playwright’s works are understood to be a reaction to environmental tension, the motive of …

2013-2014 Raise the Bar
Initially inspired by Raymond Carver’s short story Cathedral, in which a sightful man’s hand is guided by a blind man’s heart in drawing a cathedral, Fold Here unfolds in an implausible universe filled with empty cardboard boxes as the basic units of all existing matter. In pursuit of the boxes’ elusive essence, the performers explore the physical, sensorial, and spiritual properties of human beings–as parallel contents and containers of existence.

The results thus far of being accepted for the 1996-1997 ORCA scholarship are (1) my first motion picture screenplay, twenty-seven pages in length, (2) various story boarded, or handdrawn and illustrated scenes and sequences from the screenplay, and (3) much gained wisdom and experience in other film making production areas of casting, directing, producing, set design, editing, photography and location scouting and management. These results alone qualify this project, in my mind, as a great success. After all, this kind of education, more than a diploma, is what an aspiring film maker needs, and is only made available to those …

Liz Gerring’s glacier, a new dance work featuring an ever-evolving 360-degree soundscape by composer Michael J. Schumacher, explores the nature inside nature and sheds light on a raw, elemental state of existence. Over the past few years, Gerring’s unfettered physicality has garnered attention from audiences and critics alike. Her company’s signature style – athletic, precise action with an ever-rising, unstoppable momentum – is on full display in this, her largest-scale work to date.

Mormons And Drugs, Scott Christopherson, April Chabries
Journal of Undergraduate Research
When I originally acquired funding from the ORCA office I entitled my project Mormons and Drugs. I had planned on making a documentary film chronicling the lives of Latter-day Saints that struggle or have struggled with drug addiction. I was enrolled in a documentary production class (TMA 274) in Winter 2005 and in this class I began making the film about Latter-day Saint drug addicts. I focused primarily on my brother and my relationship to him. As I shot and edited that film, I realized the power of re-drafting. Throughout the course of the semester I made approximately seven different …

Giving Life To Commedia Dell’Arte, Janine Michelle Sobeck, Dr. Rodger Sorensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Commedia dell’arte is the Italian theatrical form that ruled supreme from the 13th – 18th centuries. Created in a time when the theatre tradition in Europe revolved around the classic, “cold” theatre, commedia is often seen as a revolt, becoming wildly popular while managing to rewrite the rules of what makes good theatre. Commedia revolved around the world of improvisation. Stock characters of scrupulous detail were created, relationships were determined, scenarios and situations were created, and the actors were left the opportunity to “heighten, vary, and embellish their parts as their genius might suggest.” This new form of theatre created …

Performative Primary Research, Sylvia Loehndorf, Dr. Eric Samuelsen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The five weeks I spent in Europe completing the primary research and performance of Enchanted April afforded a different research focus than I had originally intended. The program’s director changed the format of the endeavor before rehearsals ever began. What originated as an endeavor in primary research as it relates to performative dramaturgy quickly became an experiment in compromise and creative downsizing. The story of Enchanted April has three manifestations: a novel, a stage play and a motion picture. When I was cast in the production, I was commissioned by the director, Lynda Linford, to take part in blending the …

Early in Fall of 2004 I purchased and completed a series of DVD tutorials on advanced CGI animation techniques with the hope that I would be able to reimburse myslef for the purchase with ORCA funds. These DVDs covered a variety of subjects, including modeling, animating, rigging, texturing, lighting and particle manipulation. These DVDs allowed me to rapidly move forward in a more comprehensive understanding of the skill-set necessary to work in a professional environment. My increased skill and knowledge of these subjects allowed me the advantage to begin work on the Animation Senior Film Project, Der Ostwind during my …

However, as it did take place in an educational setting there were many experiences facilitated by the initiation of this project.

Shooting motion picture film is a complicated matter. A million things can go wrong and you may never even know it until long after your project it wrapped and you’re sitting at your developed film weeks later. There are so many variables. What film do we use? What company do we buy it from? What speed do we want? How do we light it? The list goes on and on. So we decided to do everything we could to eliminate the possibility that something could go wrong. We decided to shoot testers and get out all the mistakes before we …

Behind The Broadway Buzz: An Analysis Of The Communications Campaigns Of Broadway Musicals, Alexis Allen, Dr. Megan Sandborn Jones
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Broadway musicals have long represented the pinnacle of artistic professionalism in the musical theatre industry. You can generally assume that if you see a musical on Broadway in New York, it’s bound to be big—in scope, talent, creativity and numerous other categories. Consequently, Broadway musicals are also big business. According to data provided by the League of American Theatres and Producers, Broadway grossed a record $771 million in ticket sales during the 2003-2004 season. Additionally, a Broadway musical can cost as much as $10 million to produce. With such a huge investment at stake, today’s producers are unleashing an arsenal …

“I am an apparition. An echo of events long since past. Burned into my frame are the stories, brutal deeds, and bloody failures to which I have been witness. October 30, 1838. Colonel Jennings of the Missouri State Militia orders an attack on the Mormon settlement at Haun’s Mill. Seventeen Mormons die, fourteen on the night of the massacre. Of the 240 militia members, not one life was lost. I come to you as a still whisper from the halls of the past, not as a definitive end, but the door to a new beginning.”

Capoeira is an art form that originated in Brazil during the time of the slave trade. According to legend it was used as a form of communication and unification amongst the African slaves from varying tribes and lingual backgrounds in defying their masters. It has since developed in Brazil as a unique art form combining dance, song, and martial arts to provide both physical and emotional development and discipline for those involved.

Some of the best lessons of life are found in folk and fairytales and classic children’s stories. The aim of the Theater and Media Art Department’s Children’s Media Initiative is to adapt these tales and stories for the screen in order to produce short films to be aired on KBYU and other networks and film festivals. These films will appeal to parents and children, bringing the family together to watch. Rather than encouraging escapism, these films will facilitate discussion of relevant values and themes addressed in film.

Videotape And Film Preservation And Restoration, David Litster, Gordon Daines
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Film and video preservation and restoration is one of the most pressing unsolved problems faced by libraries and studios today. The basics of this science, unlike that of book preservation, are still being explored and developed. The end goal of my project was to compile and create a resource using materials culled from the best research to date on this problem. The preservation committee of the BYU Harold B. Lee Library would then use my resource to develop a workflow, set of standards, and “best practices” approach to dealing with BYU’s film and preservation issues. I worked under the direction …

The vision of The Department of Theatre and Dance’s Intersection Project was to provide points of intersection between artists and community with experiences that all creative artists share, focusing especially on inter-generational exchanges. One element of the Intersections Project was the collaborative creation of an original performance entitled Ancestra. Four student researcher/performers joined twelve Cleveland performance artists, ages 18-73, to create and present the docu-performance, Ancestra. Research for this project focused on the transcript of the 1853 National Women’s Rights Convention held in Cleveland, OH as well as other primary sources from the Women’s Suffrage Movement. The group also examined …
