The Promethean, A Modern Retelling Of The Greek Myth Prometheus, Was Completed In March Of 2003., J. Chad Erekson, Kelly Loosli

Journal of Undergraduate Research

At this point in time, most BYU animation projects have avoided lip sync. The Industrial Design Department produced a computer animated film called Rupert which had some crude imprecise mouth movements to suggest lip sync, but for the most part every traditionally animated project has tried to do complete pantomime, or use narration. With the undertaking of Lion & the Mouse, accurate lip sync was to be attempted, but as production progressed, students still only tackled the non-speaking scenes in their animations. Thus was my motivation for this project. If the lip sync in Lion & the Mouse was to …

Rags And Riches, Angela Marie Jensen, Dr. Mary Farahnakian

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Antique clothing is a valuable resource and asset to researchers in costuming, clothing, textiles, and historical fields of study. My goal has been to inform the public of the collection and its inherent value, and to extend knowledge of the collection to researchers around the world. In order to accomplish this goal there were many things that had to be done.

Absent Presence: Li Yu’S Drama Wanli Yuan And Early Qing Sartorial Politics, Guojun Wang Oct 2013

Absent Presence: Li Yu’S Drama Wanli Yuan And Early Qing Sartorial Politics, Guojun Wang

2013 New England Association for Asian Studies Conference

Li Yu’s 李玉 Wanli yuan 萬里圓 (Thousand-li Reunion) is one of the few dramas in the early Qing period that directly addresses the topic of the Ming-Qing transition. Although Wanli yuan was never published in its entirety during the Qing Dynasty, its popular scenes circulated widely on stage, resulting in a series of “performance editions.” Oriented toward stage performance, most of Li Yu’s plays include detailed costume instruction. By contrast, almost none of the extant editions of Wanli yuan includes any costume instruction. Despite this absence, the dialogues and stage directions of the extant performance editions show that different scenes …

Youth And Family Theatre: A History For Tomorrow, Elizabeth Moss, George D. Nelson Oct 2013

Youth And Family Theatre: A History For Tomorrow, Elizabeth Moss, George D. Nelson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The field of Youth and Family Theatre is a relatively new and burgeoning aspect of the overall theatre world. In the next five to ten years, almost all of the original pioneers of the Youth and Family theatre field will have passed away leaving much of their work and wisdom unavailable to future generations. What we have of their personal histories, besides their published texts and articles, is archived at Arizona State University (ASU). The nature of this archival record, however, makes it almost completely inaccessible to individuals who are not actually on site. Through this mentoring project, I have …

Mary Demorgan’S A Toy Princess, Anthony R. Petersen, Thomas Blair Russell Oct 2013

Mary Demorgan’S A Toy Princess, Anthony R. Petersen, Thomas Blair Russell

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Before describing the particulars of the project, it may be helpful to describe the story of the film I made as part of this ORCA grant. Mary DeMorgan’s A Toy Princess is about a young princess named Ursula who was born into an extremely stuffy and regimented kingdom where she wasn’t able to act as herself—nor was she even able to act as a human being would normally act, being restricted from laughing, crying, or displaying any sort of emotion. Seeing her unfortunate state, her fairy godmother, Taboret, offered her the chance to leave the kingdom to live with some …

Cultural Traditions And Public Policy: The National Film Board Of Canada’S Aboriginal Filmmaking Program, Meredith A. Bak, Dr. Dean Duncan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My project consisted of an in depth analysis of the National Film Board of Canada’s Aboriginal Filmmaking Program, to lead to the eventual publication of a feature-length article presenting the program as a model by which media literacy can be taught by exploring the work of a specific region in order to increase global communication. Initially, I had planned on traveling to Canada to conduct interviews with a variety of artists and policymakers, however, upon completion of preliminary research and based on the information offered by my Canadian contacts and my faculty mentor, I restructured my methodology to include primarily …

Let’S Get Creative About Creativity In Dance Literacy: Why, Why Not, And How?, Linda Ashley Oct 2013

Let’S Get Creative About Creativity In Dance Literacy: Why, Why Not, And How?, Linda Ashley

Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)

This article is written in the interests of opening up dialogue and generating debate about the relationship between dance literacy and the role of creativity in dance education. It aims to provoke discussion amongst dance educators who may, or may not, currently value or be aware of, the benefits that graphic movement notation can play in learning and teaching in, through and about dance. This article, however, is not an exhaustive examination of the educational value of graphic movement notation, as that information is readily available from many different sources including dance educators, anthropologists of dance, dance historians and so …
