Assailing The Academy: Helping Byu Student Films Compete, Eric Anderson, Dr. Darl Larsen Sep 2013

Assailing The Academy: Helping Byu Student Films Compete, Eric Anderson, Dr. Darl Larsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

After receiving the award from the Office of Research and Creative Activities, I set out to follow the exact design of my proposal in accomplishing something for my fellow Media Arts students and friends. I thought it would be a fairly easy task to try and systematically evaluate former winners of film festivals and in turn use that information to help BYU’s filmmakers design their films towards winning a film festival.

Metamorphoses Classroom Workshop: The Benefits Of Theatrical Experiences In The Classroom, Miranda B. Giles, George Nelson Sep 2013

Metamorphoses Classroom Workshop: The Benefits Of Theatrical Experiences In The Classroom, Miranda B. Giles, George Nelson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As the debate over the necessity of the arts in the classroom continues, this project allowed me to discover clear and measurable benefits for their inclusion in regular classroom instruction. The project began to take shape during the 100 or so hours of rehearsal that I attended as assistant stage manager for the BYU Young Company Touring show Metamorphoses. This play was adapted and designed to be seen by approximately 12,000 elementary and middle school students throughout Utah valley. From these hours of rehearsal I gleaned ideas for the workshop I would present to various classes of fourth graders who …

Freud's Last Session

Taylor Theatre Playbills

The playbill for Taylor University’s Fall 2013 performance of Freud’s Last Session by Mark St. Germain.

Freud’s Last Session focuses on psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud who has invited Oxford professor C. S. Lewis to his London home. The two men enter debate about the existence of God, love, sex, and the meaning of life – only two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own.

The play was suggested by the best selling book The Question of God by Armand M. Nicholi, Jr..

Video Games And Citizenship, Jeroen Bourgonjon, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2013

Video Games And Citizenship, Jeroen Bourgonjon, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Video Games and Citizenship" Jeroen Bourgonjon and Ronald Soetaert argue that digitization problematizes and broadens our perspective on culture and popular media and that this has important ramifications for our understanding of citizenship. Bourgonjon and Soetaert respond to the call of Gert Biesta for the contextualized study of young people's practices by exploring a particular aspect of digitization that affects young people, namely video games. They explore the new social spaces which emerge in video game culture and how these spaces relate to community building and citizenship. Bourgonjon and Soetaert also examine whether these social spaces can …

Rhetorical Analysis Of Literary Culture In Social Reading Platforms, Joachim Vlieghe, Kris Rutten Sep 2013

Rhetorical Analysis Of Literary Culture In Social Reading Platforms, Joachim Vlieghe, Kris Rutten

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Rhetorical Analysis of Literary Culture in Social Reading Platforms" Joachim Vlieghe and Kris Rutten present a case study of the discourse surrounding literary phenomena that are emerging within social media. The case study is part of a methodological exploration within literacy studies whereby the social media's transformative effects on literary literacies are studied by focusing on language as symbolic and situated action. Vlieghe and Rutten have identified unique social reading platforms based on a prolonged study of the social media environment. The analysis of the developers' discourse on social reading platforms shows how developers are formulating new …

Literature, Digital Humanities, And The Age Of The Encyclopedia, Gunther Martens Sep 2013

Literature, Digital Humanities, And The Age Of The Encyclopedia, Gunther Martens

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Literature, Digital Humanities, and the Age of the Encyclopedia" Gunther Martens takes his cue from Robert Musil's novel The Man without Qualities in order to discuss the way in which literature relates to new developments in technology. Martens argues that it is useful to situate some of the fears accompanying literature's renewed (and debated) exposure to media and technology against the background of a similar discussions earlier: the historical perspective allows to identify and link three specific discourses underpinning the debate, namely: education, rhetoric, and the concept of the encyclopedia. The encyclopedia and encyclopedic literature comprise and …

Using New Media In Teaching Greek Roma Students, Fenia Frangoulidou Sep 2013

Using New Media In Teaching Greek Roma Students, Fenia Frangoulidou

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Using New Media in Teaching Greek Roma Students" Fenia Frangoulidou discusses the use of media material as a supplementary teaching tool in a Roma classroom. Since 2011, Aristotle University has been running a European Union funded project that deals with a wide range of supportive measures for Roma students. Sociologists, social workers, and educators are the primary participants responsible for its implementation. In her study Frangoulidou discusses gender relations and racism and presents an analysis of the participation and interaction of six high school students in a mixed class of twenty-eight students. The purpose of the study …

About The Destruction, Continuation, And Transformation Of Art, Frank Maet Sep 2013

About The Destruction, Continuation, And Transformation Of Art, Frank Maet

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "About the Destruction, Continuation, and Transformation of Art" Maet offers an answer to the question raised by Arthur C. Danto's thesis how to discern art from non-art? Maet considers art from the perspective of a technologically mediated reality and he distinguishes three different views on contemporary visual art: the destruction, the continuation, and the transformation of art. Maet considers these three artistic views as different strategies to deal with our current technological condition and evaluates the merits of each of them. He argues that our thoroughly designed reality turns the strategy of artistic destruction into a dangerous …

Perspectives On Literary Reading And Book Culture, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2013

Perspectives On Literary Reading And Book Culture, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Perspectives on Literary Reading and Book Culture" Geert Vandermeersche and Ronald Soetaert provide a narrative framework for analyzing literary scholars' argumentation in the debate on literature and the humanities. Starting from MacIntyre's narrative description of epistemic "crises" they analyze the stories authors construct and the positions they take and ascribe to others within larger developing (grand) narratives on the value and function of literary reading. Both traditional narratives and new alternative (i.e., enlarged) narratives are discussed in how they set up and frame the argument and how they create dichotomies.

Reading, Literacy, And Education, Mikko Lehtonen Sep 2013

Reading, Literacy, And Education, Mikko Lehtonen

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Reading, Literacy, and Education" Mikko Lehtonen outlines a contextual approach to literacy. He asks how the changing relations of culture and economy, transformation of nation states and national cultures and changing notions concerning affect and cognition, transform notions of literacy and reading. Relying on the results of a recent Finnish research project on new reading communities and new ways of reading, Lehtonen highlights substantial continuities in the reading habits of the so called Google generation when compared to other generations of readers. Print media is not, however, connected self-evidently to cognitive reading among the said generation. Lehtonen …

Rhetoric, Citizenship, And Cultural Literacy, Kris Rutten, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2013

Rhetoric, Citizenship, And Cultural Literacy, Kris Rutten, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Rhetoric, Citizenship, and Cultural Literacy" Kris Rutten and Ronald Soetaert start from concerns in contemporary educational debates about a growing lack of civic literacy. These complaints are raised both in the public sphere, in institutions of pedagogy, and in scholarship about the form, content, and function of civic literacy and civic education. Although there is an ongoing debate about the alleged decrease of political interest and the current state of civic literacy, it is clear that civic education has become an important focus of different governmental initiatives. Rutten and Soetaert aim to move away from a straightforward …

Integrating Social Media In Education, Hadewijch Vanwynsberghe, Pieter Verdegem Sep 2013

Integrating Social Media In Education, Hadewijch Vanwynsberghe, Pieter Verdegem

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Integrating Social Media in Education" Hadewijch Vanwynsberghe and Pieter Verdegem propose a framework in order to integrate social media literacy in an educational setting. In today's networked society students are new media users and hence the relevance in curricula to include social media literacy. Vanwynsberghe and Verdegem propose a multidimensional conceptual framework of social media literacy that includes the practical, cognitive, and affective competencies needed to deal with information of social media, to communicate with others through social media, to create content on social media, and to handle the consequences related to these three activities. On the …

Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Digitizing The Middle Ages, Roberta Capelli Sep 2013

Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Digitizing The Middle Ages, Roberta Capelli

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Practical and Theoretical Implications of Digitalizing the Middle Ages" Roberta Capelli discusses scholarship about and the teaching of medieval culture in digital humanities. While every medieval manuscript is an individual entity, displaying a series of unique and unrepeatable material, structural and aesthetic characteristics, digital devices are able to generate only two-dimensional photographic reproductions. However, the digital medium brings about some major improvements in the study — and teaching — of medieval manuscripts because the hypertextual nature of its applications allows us to analyse simultaneously synchronic and the diachronic dynamics. From a theoretical point of view, the difference …

“Untitled” Aka “Unhinged”, Chloe Huber, Steven Enfield Aug 2013

“Untitled” Aka “Unhinged”, Chloe Huber, Steven Enfield

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I worked as the production designer on the senior film project “Unhinged.” The story follows Phillip who paints in the bathroom. He is a man of few words and enjoys the isolation. With a closed door at his back, Mary waits with an ultimatum. She’ll return the key to his apartment if he doesn’t open up the door and talk about their relationship. But Phillip has a deadline. In a matter of mere hours, he will face his toughest critics during perhaps the most difficult night of his artistic career. Yet Mary can’t wait for him any longer, she would …

Abandoned In Space: Producing A 3-D Student Short Film, Aaron Stevens, Dr. Darl Larsen Aug 2013

Abandoned In Space: Producing A 3-D Student Short Film, Aaron Stevens, Dr. Darl Larsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When two other film students and I received an ORCA grant to research stereoscopic 3-D and make a film using the information gained, we were not prepared for the full scope of this project. My original goal as a producer with this production was to research production models that were best suited for low budget and student short films in 3-D. However, I soon found that there was very little, if any, precedent to go off of. Therefore, I decided to move forward using the education and training in producing I’ve received at BYU, my own experience as a producer, …

Breaking Down Iron Walls: The Use Of Applied Theatre In Romanian Schools, Miriam Rasmussen, Julia Ashworth Aug 2013

Breaking Down Iron Walls: The Use Of Applied Theatre In Romanian Schools, Miriam Rasmussen, Julia Ashworth

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Through many studies and programs it has been discovered that a lack of self-worth is one of the main contributing factors to poor morale and work ethic in Romania. It has been found, that, for the majority of the country, poor expectations have led to poor performance in the workplace, hostile environments within communities and a mass migration to other countries within the European Union (Heintz 178). Under that same umbrella of lack of self-worth, there is also a special category of need found in Romanian children who have been placed in orphanages. While research has been done to recognize/identify …

‘Whe’Re Ya Gunna Go?’ Script Development And Distribution, Kyle Fackrell, Zach Kempf, Dr. Rodger Rosensen Aug 2013

‘Whe’Re Ya Gunna Go?’ Script Development And Distribution, Kyle Fackrell, Zach Kempf, Dr. Rodger Rosensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

‘Whe’re Ya Gunna Go?’ is a student written script that we have been developing since 2006 which, at the outset of this ORCA funding process, was in the script development and workshopping stage and was being prepped for submission for various festivals and consideration by regional theatre literary staff. It was for the purpose of financing these efforts and the attendant expenses involved in developing and distributing the script (and, naturally, for the personal and professional growth that could result from these professional connections) that the ORCA grant was sought and received, and for it’s reception we are surely grateful.

Fit For The Kingdom : Two French Documentaries, John Forbyn, Dr. Dean Duncan Aug 2013

Fit For The Kingdom : Two French Documentaries, John Forbyn, Dr. Dean Duncan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While spending May/June/July 2009 in Paris, France, to conduct an Individual Field Study and complete my Honors Thesis, I worked to produce two short (4-8 minute) films examining the lives of immigrant students and refugees in France who have recently converted to the LDS church. My intent has been to contribute my films to the corpus of BYU’s Fit for the Kingdom documentary project where they would be featured in the website’s streaming video collection. Fit for the Kingdom films tend to focus on one individual at a time, so my intentions as to the subject/ characters I’m seeking were …

Shaving: A Short Film, James Alexander, Thomas Russell Aug 2013

Shaving: A Short Film, James Alexander, Thomas Russell

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The short film Shaving is an adaptation of a simple yet powerful short story of the same name by the Welsh author Leslie Norris. Upon first reading it, this story resonated with me; its beautiful message about preparing for and coping with loss is important and can be helpful to the human experience. The visual nature of Norris’ writing inspired me. I wanted to bring this story to a wider audience. Adapting the story to short film made this possible; it also provided me and several other film students with an opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom and …

A Theatrical Exploration Of Immigration In The United States, Matthew Greene, Dr. Wade Hollingshaus Aug 2013

A Theatrical Exploration Of Immigration In The United States, Matthew Greene, Dr. Wade Hollingshaus

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my ORCA project was to create a piece of theatre centering on the issue of immigration in the United States. I wrote in my proposal: “Illegal immigration is a significant issue in the current political, economic, and social arenas. In exploring this issue through theatre we can help bring the immediacy of the border situation closer to our audience.” The project ultimately did accomplish this goal but did so in a manner somewhat unexpected.

Post-Production Techniques For Anaglyphic 3d Video, Nathan Grout, Dr. Darl Larsen Aug 2013

Post-Production Techniques For Anaglyphic 3d Video, Nathan Grout, Dr. Darl Larsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the past year, there has been a wave of 3D films in theaters. These films utilize the latest digital technologies for production and distribution to provide a superior 3D experience. Similar quality levels, however, can be achieved on an independent/student production level. The resurrection of what is often considered an antiquated technique, anaglyphic 3D, levels the playing fields and provides low budget filmmakers a viable option for creating 3D films.

River Of Victory Life In A Cambodian Garbage Dump, Trevor Wright, Ben Unguren Aug 2013

River Of Victory Life In A Cambodian Garbage Dump, Trevor Wright, Ben Unguren

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As I set out to create a documentary about the lives of the residents of the Stueng Mean Chey landfill outside of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, I thought I knew what to expect. I had lived and worked with the people of the dump during my time as a volunteer at the Cambodian Children’s Fund the previous summer, and I was familiar with the culture, language, and area. After two years of preparation and planning, my crew and I arrived in Phnom Penh and set off to work. Only three days passed before all of our ideas and plans for the …

Roak-Aradun And Other Stories, Michael Mercer, Kelly Loosli Aug 2013

Roak-Aradun And Other Stories, Michael Mercer, Kelly Loosli

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Brigham Young University’s Animation program is well on its way to becoming legendary. With the combined heroism of the faculty, the students, the administration, and others, there has risen a collegiate experience that rivals that of private art institutions. Yet no university program has room enough for all the knowledge and skills needed for specialty occupations, and so perhaps the greatest success of any education is the transmission of the skills and desire to learn and discover. This has most assuredly been the case with the Animation program. My goal with this research and production project was to obtain for …
